KIMPO AIRFIELD - KOREAN WAR, SEPTEMBER 1950 In this great photo from September 1950, the US Marines on the ground are greeting 2 pilots of a Mustang fighter plane at Kimpo airfield in South Korea. A major objective after the famous Inchon Landing was to recapture and secure the Kimpo Airfield, which was located closest to Seoul. Recapturing this airfield from the North Korea communists was critical in allowing US Air Force fighter planes to provide close air support to the US ground troops as they were fighting and advancing towards Seoul. This airfield was also critical for cargo planes to use for supplying the troops as they made their advance on the ground. As the Korean War progressed, various airbases were established closest to the front lines to allow fighter planes cargo planes, and helicopters to fly and provide support to the fighting forces on the ground. This photo shows the very first Mustang P51 fighter plane to land right after the US Marines had recaptured and secure the Kimpo airfield in September 1950, just a few days after the Inchon Landing. From many interviews I conducted with Korean War veterans, I learned they have a great admiration and respect for each other. For the troops on the ground, the fighter pilots were their saviors and for the pilots flying in the sky, they regarded the infantry soldiers as the real heroes. This post is dedicated in honor of these brothers in arms, who fought with great courage to save the people of South Korea from communist tyranny. 30 September 1940 Oberleutnant Karl Fischer’s Bf109E-1 (Wn.4851 9+) of 7./Jagdgeschwader 27, after a forced landing near Queen Anne’s Gate, Windsor Great Park, Berkshire. The plane is subject to eager attention from the RAF salvage gang. The mission was a bomber escort. When the formation was on its way to the objective it was attacked by fighters (possibly Hurricanes from 303 Squadron), this aircraft getting into a dog fight. The combat was broken off and the pilot thought that he had not been hit. However an R/T message from his wingman told the pilot that he had a white petrol plume streaming behind and looking at his petrol gauge he noticed that the tanks were almost empty, so he made a forced landing. There were a number of bullet strikes from astern. (The pilot was captured and survived unhurt) Markings: 9 painted on yellow engine cowling. Spinner white, with black circle on tip. On May 18, 1940 the Belgian eastern cantons, which passed from Germany to Belgium in 1919, are annexed by Hitler. Locals are largely divided, as is illustrated by this pro-German propaganda booklet by Peter Dehottay. • The other Few • This poster, the most famous one of the war with the legendary quotation of Winston Churchill (Never was so much owed by so many to so few), was a tribute to RAF fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain -called the Few by Prime Minister- but the airmen featured actually belonged to Bomber Command, which on those days hit the German capital and relevant targets every night to keep the Nazis head down contributing to the winning of the battle and diverting the threat of invasion of the British Isles, a crucial role in which 719 bomber aircrew were killed. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the ‘Battle of Britain Day, a turning point in the war. Berlin authorized a main attack on Britain on a final attempt to destroy RAF Fighter Command in two major raids. The ensuining large scale air-battle, with the largest and most concentrated bombing against London to date, resulted in high losses to the German bombers. The day was a significant victory for the British, the Germans lost 57 aircraft while another 23 returned damaged. The pilots were, from left to right, Sgt Dinty Moore, Sgt Peter Elliot, Sgt Rawles, Sgt Harold Stone (DFM) and Sgt James Craig, all members of a Bomber Command squadron who posed for the propaganda image. THEY CALLED THEM LITTLE COBRAS When U.S. Marines stormed the shores of Guadalcanal in August 1942 in the first major U.S. Pacific offensive of the war, both Americans and Japanese threw whatever nearby air forces they could find into the mix. The result was an ad hoc unit called the Cactus Air Force, after the island’s code name. Its most lackluster member was the Bell P-39 Airacobra. ::: The P-39couldn’t attain the legendary status of those aircraft produced later in WW !!, but proved critical early in the war. ::: The airplanes were welcomed by the Soviet Union where the air war was fought mainly at low altitudes and short ranges, and when German aircraft flew low for close air support, the Little Cobras, as the Soviets called their P-39s, were there to strike. — This Friday, September 25, an aerial tribute commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II will take place over the National Mall and Potomac River. — To complement the aerial tribute, we’ve created a special webpage dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII.
