Today marks 11 years since I launched @SavoirFlair. It’s been a journey of high highs and low lows, and still I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Around this time last year, we proudly announced the launch of our coffee-table book published by @Assouline, and today I can finally reveal the cover in a bittersweet moment that won’t see me celebrating with my team in person, yet celebrating nonetheless. There, in the shadow of the historic Hotel Theresa—once known as the Waldorf of Harlem—eight local artists came together this summer to transform the movement’s now-iconic 16 letters into a grandly meaningful artwork nearly two blocks long. The mural’s design is as precise as it is powerful. “Each of the letters is perfectly aligned and stands exactly 21 feet tall,” explains artist and curator LeRone Wilson, who worked with Harlem Park to Park and Got to Stop on the project. “It was crucial that nothing felt uneven or out of place.” Much of that exactness is thanks to Rockwell Group, which lent its urban planning and architecture expertise to the mural’s initial, stenciled text—laid down with the help of United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 union. Once each letter’s outline and base coat was in place, the artists added their own distinctive marks to salute the struggle for racial and social justice both in Harlem and across the globe. “The mural has already become a place of healing,” said Wilson, whose L in the word Black features the names of 24 victims of police brutality. “Amadou Diallo’s mother called me crying after seeing his. Ted Prize Publication! . . 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: JR’s goal for his Inside Out project was to bring about discussion and change people’s perspectives about the world. I came up with a compositional grid and structure that would be the premise for the entire publication, and I chose to make the imagery hold significant hierarchy in the overall piece. I felt photography best represented the entire message behind the project. I embraced JR’s stylistic choice of using black and white imagery that has black polka dots behind his main subject, and I used this throughout my entire publication to create continuity and rhythm. . . My love letter to Maui made the cover of the October issue of @travelandleisure. The ocean drew me to Maui but it was the island’s upcountry that captured my heart and imagination. I wrote this story in November and it’s a testament to the resiliency and support of the local community that all of the small businesses mentioned in this piece are still going strong despite the halt in tourism. This issue is dear to my heart and a subject I wanted to explore for January 2020. When I was 27 years old I quit a corporate job in advertising and became a fashion intern. I never had a plan, but I knew I wanted to be a Fashion Stylist and didnt care what I had to do to get there. My first intern job was assisting Karen Langley which I didnt even close to realise how major that experience was at the time. @emirateswoman explores the idea that its never too late to do something else and live your dreams.
