Seattle’s Chinatown/International District has a complex history, stemming from decades of immigration and the hand-in-hand racism that came along with it. Since the conception of this district, there has always been some portion of the population that has suffered through the discrimination of others—namely white Americans. Starting in 1886, the Seattle Anti-Chinese Riot, during which “two weeks in white Seattleites rounded up the city’s Chinese residents, forced them onto ships and boxcars and shipped them north and south. By the end of it, a community of hundreds had been reduced to a few dozen” (Pulkkinen). For this reason, the Chinatown over here is less established than similar communities, such as Portland. Of course, the Chinese population has not been the only population discriminated against. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the vast majority of Chinatown’s Japanese population were forcibly removed to the internment camps. During their absence, “Chinese and Filipino workers and shops filled the need for services while the Japanese were gone for three years,” which kept this area alive (Densho). However, the numerous Japanese businesses and residences dwindled, and many people were not able to return to their homes or jobs once released; many employers and neighbors were openly hostile and did not want to be associated with Japanese-Americans. Unfortunately, while modern times have reduced the number of racist sentiments, longtime residents of the International District still face discrimination. This time, it is due to financial reasons—Seattle’s booming housing market and development have led to forced evictions as developers buy up older parts of the area. This gentrification has caused grief among citizens like Tai Fung Chin, who was “forced out of her apartment in Seattles International District back in 2015. But she didnt want to leave the neighborhood…’Because of the language barrier, this is like China — everybody speaks the same language so, they dont have any choice’ (KUOW). These actions don’t only hurt the current residents of this neighborhood, but also trample over the historic significance of the area. For example, Chinatown - @internationaldistrict206 on Instagram

16-09-1939 Japanese soldiers with captured Soviet equipment after their first strike in Mongolia. The Battles of Khalkhin Gol were part of a Soviet-Japanese border conflict fought in the Mongolian People’s Republic. The conflict started in May 1939 and lasted until September 16, 1939. The dispute concerned itself with the position of the border between Mongolia and Manchukuo, which was a puppet state of Japan. The Mongols on their turn were a puppet state of the Soviet-Union and therefore, this war can be considered a proxy war. The Japanese forces initiated an assault in July and drove the Soviet forces back into Mongolia. The Soviets however saw that a war was inevitable in Europe and decided that it had to quickly launch an counterattack with which it would defeat the Japanese. The Russian forces consisted out of over 500 tanks and 500 fighters and bombers. The Japanese forces were heavily outnumbered because their intelligence failed to track the Russian build-up of forces. On September 16, a cease-fire was signed and free of a threat on the east, Russia launched an offensive in Poland on September 17. The Soviet-Japanese conflict is unknown in the west but played an important role in subsequent Japanese conduct in World War II. The defeat against the Soviet-Union made Tokyo decide to move away from trying to capture resources in Siberia and instead shifted the Japanese attention to Southeast India. This included capturing the mineral-rich Dutch East indies. Moreover, the decision to attack Pearl Harbor can be derived from the aftermath of the Soviet-Japanese conflict. From the ceased-fire, the two states signed agreements respecting the borders of the disputed area in Mongolia and Manchukuo and pledging neutrality towards each other. Therefore, Japan its focus was completely shifted to the South which partly led to attack on Pearl Harbor. ——————————————————— #worldwar2 #ww2 #wwii #secondworldwar #Mongolia #Japan #Kriegsmarine #America #wehrmacht #blitzkrieg #navy #wehrmacht #stalin #royalairforce #war #history #nazi #ushistory #Germany ##germanhistory #battle #warzone #Pearlharbor #sovietunion #usa #britain #siberia - @ww2recaptured on Instagram

The Battle of Kiev (Aug. 23 – Sept. 26 1941) . The Battle of Kiev was fought between the German Army Group South and the Red Army during Operation Barbarossa. While the German Army Group Central had successfully captured the cities of Minsk and Smolensk, Army Group South faced more resistance in their advance. On the 3th of August, the führer had given the controversial order to Heinz Guderian that Army Group Central’s 2nd Panzer army and 2nd Infantry army had to stop their advance onto Moscow and support Army Group South in their encirclement of Kiev. . The battle of Kiev started on the 23th of August. The strategy was again to trap the Soviet’s Army groups in a large pocket. The Germans were in the advantage because they had complete air superiority and the Red Army had lost a significant amount of tanks in previous battles. By the 1st of September, the circle started to shape itself around the Red Army troops and the order was given by the Soviet’s High Command that every army group had to hold their line. By September 13, the 9th and the 3th panzer division made contact with each other east of Kiev, completing the encirclement. Inside the pocket there was no communication and mass confusion among the Red Army soldiers. This was made even worse when the Germans started trapping every encircled group into their own small pocket. The Red Army soldiers were under constant artillery, tank and air bombardment. On the 19th of September, the city of Kiev surrenders and seven days later all the trapped army groups surrendered to the Germans. A small group of Red Army soldiers managed to escape, but most of them were either killed, captured or missing. . The battle of Kiev was a massive success for the Axis powers and a huge blow for the Soviets. Around 616,000 Soviets were killed, captured or missing and the Red Army lost 2,5 full army groups. The encirclement trapped over 450,000 soldiers, which made it the largest human encirclement in military history. . . Was it a strategic succes or not? Comment below! 👇 . 💢Do you think it was effective 💢⠀ here is a German Panther tank half burried in the groudn, Berlin 1945. This was used at the end of the war because the fuel was rare and some tanks couldnt move. Plus all the mechanical problems and the city fights lead the Germans to turn some turrets like this one into fixed defenses.⠀ -⠀ -⠀ 💢| Make sure to follow @history_by_wars for more posts everyday ⠀ ⠀ #war #warhistory #worldwar #worldwarhistory #worldwar2 #worldwar2history #worldwartwo #worldwartwohistory #ww2 #ww2history #wwii #historygeeks #historygeek #historyiscool #historybuff #historybuffs #historylover #historylovers #ww2germany #ww2weapons #ww2guns - @history_by_wars on Instagram

Waffen SS soldiers in eastern front @regiment_germania . 🇺🇸The Waffen-SS (SS Fighters) were an armed force of Nazi Germany born in March 1933 as a military arm of the SS. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. The Waffen-SS participated in almost all the battles of the Second World War; their soldiers gave proof of combativeness, efficiency and strong ideological motivation to the point that, on the one hand, they were guilty of brutal episodes of summary violence against civilians and prisoners of war and, on the other, often showed an excessive and reckless disdain for danger. . . . . . . #war #ww2 #ww #ss #worldwar2 #worldwarii #worldwar2german #wehrmacht #waffenss #warsaw #warm #worldwartwo #worldwar2photos #world #gun #soldier #history #ww1 #ww2history #soviet #follow #ww1 #secondworldwar #warhistory #_germanww2_ #worldwar2history #germany🇩🇪 - @world.war_2_germany on Instagram
