School starts on Wednesday and I’m so looking forward to getting back to work. ▪️ It’s been a long six months—so long it feels like a lot more than half a year—since I worked routinely in this cozy corner. I’ve fallen behind on literally everything. I’ve rarely been able to write/brainstorm in the capacity I want to. And at the same time, we are healthy and well as a family, so I can’t really complain. ▪️ But on Wednesday my eldest starts kindergarten (in person!) and my youngest will have care m/w/f, so I’ll be back to my old three days a week schedule. I can barely wait. I plan to write like the wind because if I’ve learned anything these past few months it’s that things can change overnight. My short story collection that I started years ago was meant to be about grief, but here we are actively grieving things as they pile on. A pandemic, racial reckoning, wildfires, economic crisis, isolation, the loss of routine. I have to remind myself it’s ok to not be productive, to not feel creative. We are going through a collective loss. I try to name it, then find my way one word at a time. I am healthy, I have a home. Around me is a bean bag, a lamp, the smell of sourdough baking. Being an “entrepreneur” can be lonely and confusing. Especially at this stage, very early in the business and with so much learning and development still ahead, it’s easy to be filled with doubt. I see friends living their lives, moving up the ladder in their respective lines of work, making clear professional progress, and enjoying well earned validation for it. I see them making good money while every dime my partners and I have stays in the business. I face friends and family, wondering if you really have something going on or are just too lazy or uninventive to go get a real job. I wonder it myself, am I lazy? Am I crazy? Am I actually spending my time wisely? Is this foolish? Have I surrendered the opportunity of a conventional but successful career out of naïveté? The jury is still out on these questions. Good morning, friends, and happy Monday :) Not much to say today, I just wanted to check in and see how you’re all doing! I’ve been taking a bit of space from social, and I feel a little bit like I can breathe again. That said, I have no plans to not use social media entirely, but I just want to be a bit more intentional with the time I choose to devote to it. The doomscrolling is very real, and my therapist and I agreed that setting boundaries for myself was probably the best thing I could do at this time. Very thankful for the awesome therapist I have who has seamlessly integrated Telehealth into her practice since March and is allowing me to get the help I need without risking my health to do so. Your mental health matters, and I just want you to remember that it’s 100% okay to need help. No one is an island, blahblahblah, you know. How are you feeling? Any exciting news in your life, or big changes on the horizon? I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy and remembering to drink water and take your meds. —M Oh, unrelated to anything, I got a @paperlike screen protector for my iPad and it has made note taking on a screen like twelve million times better. It’s cardiac rhythm time in my @chamberlainedu Critical Care course, which means it’s time to break out my favorite resources for EKG interpretation! AND GUESS WHAT! Every resource is linked on my “nursing school resource master list” (which you can find through the link in my bio), so you can very easily use them for your own studying...along with about a hundred other resources for nursing school! First of all, the @cecestudyguides are A+++ for everything, but I am absolutely obsessed with her EKG interpretation notes. God they’re beautiful. I wish I took notes that looked like this, but thankfully Cece did so I can have all the aesthetic study vibes despite my artistic shortcomings. Secondly: if you struggle with EKGs or just want to become like...the EKG master? You need Dr. Dubin’s “Rapid Interpretation of EKGs.” It starts with the absolute basics and builds from there with visuals, definitions, examples, and amazing memory-building repetition. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I’ve been using it since I worked in prehospital emergency medicine well over a decade ago and I use it still! And then if you want some intense real-time practice, I would strongly suggest you check out Skills Stat. As with all nursing knowledge and skills, repetition is key, so if you know you struggle or just want to improve your EKG interpretation skills, check these resources out! ✨My first block of exams✨ WOW do I feel a sense of relief. We had 3 exams today on three different subjects that were all somehow interconnected :’) We only had 3 weeks worth of lecture but had classes every day so it ended up being a lot of material to cover! We started with medical genetics which is my strong suit 😎 I felt like I basically got 💯 on that exam. Then we had cell bio which I was also comfortable with, and I felt like I definitely did well on that exam too!The tricky subject was biochem. All of my classmates and I were skeptical of the testable material ahead of time because we felt like the lectures/power-points were pretty vague.. coincidentally, it was the HARDEST and LONGEST exam. There were many clinical comparisons, minute details, and relationships between mechanisms you’d never think of. Over all I feel alright with everything considering this was our first set of exams. • Active vs. passive learning • Halfway through 2nd year of med school I changed my study habits because I wasn’t happy with how I was performing. I went from being a passive learner to an active participant in my studies. Not only did my grades improve, but I felt differently about studying. It became a process I enjoyed, rather than a million daunting powerpoint slides staring back at me. Passive: 💤 Reading 💤 Listening to lectures 💤 Clicking through PowerPoints Active: ☕️ Practice questions (my personal favorite) ☕️ Teaching (to your friends, pets, or the wall) ☕️ Drawing things out ☕️ Flash cards/spaced repetition (y’all know I loooveeee Anki) Take the time to form good study habits early. No particular reason for this photo, but im just feeling happy that Ive been waking up at 6 plus 7am pretty consistently the past 2 weeks! And also smiling as i write cards to my students! Some of u might be shocked why 7am is something to rejoice, cause thats normal for u to reach office by 830 or 9am. But eh Ive been freelancing for 11 years, my normal earliest waking time is like 8 or 9am, sometimes nua till 10am or 12pm if im super tired. The only times i wake at 5am is cause of events/gigs! For years, i have been wanting to wake up at 5 or 6am like those big time entrepreneurs, but just couldnt. Plus no kids, no commitment (pros and cons lah). Until covid19 forced reset -renew-restart. Plus the Fabulous Productivity App. Took a few months of pivoting, reflecting, revamping, and Im determined to make my next half of my life count for something more! I used to hate that! I hated being doubted, simply because I wore the label ‘employee’. I hated having to ask for permission to get well. I hated that the only day truly free from obligation was one I would spend too sick to enjoy. Acknowledging these seemingly small changes in my reality makes me feel on top of the world (even with the crud that has taken me down over the last couple of days)! Not having to listen for that particular tone of disbelief reminds me of all the freedoms, big and small, that I’m working so hard for. Most days, I walk through these doors absentmindedly. But for some reason this week, I am extra thankful for these four walls. I’ve done the nine to five. At a desk, in an office, at a secular company – miserable, discouraged, and purposeless. I got the full ride, I earned the two B.S. degrees, I was on my way to med school. But at the end of each day, the only thing that mattered was, “Am I in God’s will?” Don’t let this world (or your small, personal world!) pressure you into feeling unsuccessful because there are not 26 letters following your name and six digits following a dollar sign. The most successful person in the world is a child of God in the center of His will. ANNOTATING •FIRST AID• USMLE STEP 1 I am dropping a whole YouTube video on this so go check it out!! First, I will say I had no idea how to annotate First Aid during M1... I was honestly too scared to write in it so I didn’t even use it as a resource much. I WISH I HAD USED IT AS AN M1! Now, I use first aid alongside my classes, boards & beyond, uworld, Rx, and all my other resources! First aid is that ‘gold standard’ book where it organizes most everything you need to know and allows you to take notes to reference all in ONE PLACE! To annotate first aid, I use @paper_mate flair medium colorful pens linked on my Amazon store, pilot G-2 .05 ball point pens, highlighters, tabs, and sticky notes. Even if you aren’t a big “paper” fan, I think having a reference resource is super valuable and taking notes in it is important because it doesn’t have everything and rather than just reading your incorrect uworld answers, you should annotate them into your book so you actually can see them again! My highlighting system: 🟨 - disorder name 🟦 - histology/pathology finding 🟪 - drug MOA 🟧 - clinical finding 🟥 - gene/enzyme name 🟩 - lab value Everyone does this differently but I decided to only highlight things that show up on step questions... the “high yield” pieces if you will! I seriously do not highlight anything else. If I want something to pop I may underline with my paper mate pens but usually I only use them to draw in extra diagrams or information I may need to look back on. I use my sticky notes to write-in information I learn from my lectures related to the topic! I do this so I can know what came from a step resource (written directly into FA) vs what came from my professors (added to FA in a sticky note.) I use tabs on my book to indicate which unit I learned the information in. For example, I put green tags on the pages that relate to my Metabolism and Reproductive unit so when studying for step I can remember! I under-utilized first aid as an M1 and wish I used it for all our units passed foundations. Trabajar como trader en los mercados financieros, en la compra y venta de valores. ¿Sonaba fácil? ¡No! Tampoco tenía que ver con nada que hubiese ejercido antes. Pero era la opción que me daría la libertad que estaba buscando ✨ Tomé la decisión y comencé a investigar en las redes del entrevistado @ffialli , para adquirir su curso. Justamente estaba haciendo un sorteo donde el primer lugar era su curso online. Participé, espere unos días y este era mi destino pues, ¡gané el curso!💥 Apenas llegué a USA🇺🇸 empecé el curso donde aprendí todo sobre el stock market. Estudié durante muchos meses, empecé a trabajar y luego nos ofrecieron venirnos a Oman🇴🇲 así que lo puse en pausa por algunos meses. Antes de volver quise prepararme un poco más y decidí hacerlo con @tutradingplan que fue el último impulso para volver con todo! Since the pandemic started my 9 year old has been home with me every day. The end of grade 3 didn’t look exactly how I had hoped. Most times when I was working in my studio he was either sitting at my desk until I needed it or in the kitchen where I couldn’t supervise him as well. So we knew we needed to make some changes to the space to make it functional for us both. Plus we moved in a year ago and my shop has been one of the last things to get done. So I’m super excited to see it come together. We are almost there.. this is my desk area and I had enough room for my extra machine. I’m loving these shelves because let’s be honest, having a pretty space was just as important as being functional to me. I spend a lot of time in here so I wanted it to be visually satisfying. It’s okay to have moods that are hard to keep up with. My moods swing like a flipping pendulum but then they always have and I don’t want to play that down anymore. If no experience, the best to communicate with the desired team gathering arguments on how long itll take. I’m such a firm believer in everything happening for a reason, and I think that as long as you are giving your all, there’s nothing more you can do! There will be certain opportunities that will come your way and others that will pass you, but just know that you did your best and put yourself out there. I feel like in the classroom setting or online where all you might hear about is others successes, it’s so important to talk about “failing” and getting rejected from some opportunities. A personal example: the other day I posted about getting a highly sought after TA position at my school, but what you didn’t see is that I have been rejected and told no (with no exaggeration) like 20 different times throughout the year and even !!today!! Anyone else doing their entire schooling online this year? 💻 I have 3 shifts left as a PSW and then it’s go-time for the next week to prepare my space and write all my due dates for the school year into my calendar and agenda. Since I won’t be lugging a big bag of books and a heavy laptop around campus this year (which kind of makes me sad?), I’ve made a point to purchase a hefty agenda/planner filled with lots of pages that will keep me on top of my schoolwork. It’s specifically made for academic purposes, so it’s equipped with pages that have space to fill in my “class” schedule and upcoming due dates to remember. I’m going to try and create a zen space and aesthetically pleasing environment for myself, since this will be a much-loved space for me this year. You know you’re in med school when your weekends aren’t real and they’re just a time to catch up on everything you haven’t studied yet 😩. . I’ve been really enjoying batching my time. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 🧭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 🧭𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠? It’s a time management technique where you group similar tasks together and set aside a specific amount of time for it. Whether you complete it or not, when that time segment is up, you move on. This has been helpful because I’m someone that will keep working on something until I’m satisfied. That’s great for quality but lacks quantity— which is a huge component of the “fire hydrant” analogy of med material. It also reduces “multi-tasking” and interruptions for the allotted tasks. . “Multi-tasking” has been shown to reduce productivity by 40% and can take 50% longer to complete tasks once interrupted. . Well, this isn’t exactly how I thought I would start my new job—working from home, in isolation—but I’m just grateful that I have a job that allows me to do so. And while my classmates are continuing onward to fourth year rotations and sub-internships, I am taking an educational detour: a full year of research before returning to my medical school curriculum. - The past few days have been a rollercoaster, as most transitional periods seem to be. - Friday: Internal Medicine shelf exam, goodbye lunch with a friend, baked cookies for the roommates, celebrated mom’s birthday, final hugs with my sister. - Saturday: Drove my bf to the UHaul pick-up spot, drove back to my house, dissembled my bed, packed up the truck, drove several hours in the sun and drizzle and downpour to the city, my cat losing his mind in the backseat. Realized my dresser and boxspring and desk couldn’t fit through my new bedroom doorway on the third floor. Dissembled/reassembled them. My boyfriend pulled the boxspring up with a rope on the rooftop deck 3 stories up (a true superhero, wish I filmed it). - Sunday: Unpacked, ordered delivery. Unpacked some more. Returned the UHaul truck. Watched Cobra Kai on Netflix. Said goodbye to my wonderful bf as I dropped him off at a rental car place. Dinner with a local friend from college. And unpacked until 1am. - Monday: 5 loads of laundry, organized my things and rearranged my furniture. HIPAA compliance training. Paid utilities for my old place and rent for my new place. Zoom research meeting. Made a study schedule for Step 2. Finished Cobra Kai, my last sweet moments of “free time” before diving head first into Step 2 studying. - So here I go, into the study cave, in a new apartment away from home. And once Step 2 is checked off my list, I will begin my year of research in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. 🌱 - I will be less active on Instagram for the next month or so. But once Step 2 is over, I’ll give you the grand home tour, with many posts about topics that I haven’t had the time to adequately discuss due to my studies! There is no perfect setup for remote work, it all depends on what works best for you, some need a screen, others more. Try to take advantage of everything you have. In my case I take advantage of my 3 screens for different tasks: Management, Execution and Communication. . Something I do a lot is to have blocks of time, in the early morning I take the opportunity to exercise, see what I will eat during the day and have everything ready for lunch and dinner. In the afternoon I always have a break where I try to clear my mind to continue working later. At night I take the opportunity to review the things I will do the next day and for some personal projects. . Every day all this can vary, what advice would you give to someone who works at home? . . Hi everyone, sorry if I haven’t been posting content lately. I’m just dealing with a few things that’s going on atm and it’s been a bit of a struggle. It’s been impacting me and I’ve struggled to concentrate for the past few days, so please bear with me. . A few days ago, I found out that my grandma suffered a mini stroke which caused her to fall from her bed - she sustained two fractured fingers, two really badly-bruised and swollen eyes and a small laceration on her forehead. Her MRI and CT scans showed no other injuries which was a relief! It was horrifying seeing a photo of her injuries and it was pretty difficult to deal with emotionally - yes I know that I’ve seen far worse as a student nurse, but it’s always tough when it’s your family member. She’s doing fine now and she’s recovering. I remember that one time when she asked me “why are you studying so hard for 3 years just to become a nurse?”. I wish I was there to take care of her and tell her, “grandma, this is why I want to become a nurse☺️” . Anyways, my 3000 word essay is currently doing my head in. I’m far from finished but to my surprise, I managed to write 1500 words straight without procrastinating🤡 . Change is inevitable and we have no control over it. The only thing we can control is the way we react and the way we allow change to effect us. For over 7 years that desk has been the home of @lovesquaredweddings and for over 7 years I’ve worked to develop a dream. A dream that was rooted in the art of capturing beautiful moments as they happen and telling the stories of love. I’m a lover baby and over the years I have told the stories of love with care and appreciation and for that, I am proud of myself. But the tides change roll in and the seas of possibility are vast and with that Love Squared has set sail on a journey that is beyond me. So today, I officially close up shop at midtown and I know in my heart of hearts that my first love in business is in good hands with the new owners @mrbueno83 and @mrsbueno92 Shout out to all the amazing moments I experienced along the way. Within a few weeks, the world has observed a dramatic shift of events. Never had I imagined, that borders would be sealed, airlines will seize operations, travel will be restricted, offices will be closed, malls, theatres, restaurants, shops, everything what we call life, will come to a sudden standstill... .
