I think Ive found the secret to getting excited about swatching. Put one skein of all your new projects or yarns in a basket, and give yourself permission to pull out a single skein, wind and swatch for a new project whenever you get bored... or if you have a bad day, or a doctors appointment. If you have a bad relationship with your current wip. If its movie night. You know, your reasons are your reasons. ⠀ ⠀ I know that sounds crazy, but this has totally cured my cast-on-itis! Im pretty required to swatch for most projects now, and usually I find that the thing Im looking forward to with each new cast on is getting to know the yarn through working with it. A swatch often tells me if I need to switch needle materials for a more enjoyable knitting experience--and if I need to work on the project with a direct light. It might help shape my decisions on what actually ends up next on my needles. ⠀ ⠀ Tell me your swatch stories--when did swatching get the better of you? I have a mega oversized cardigan shaped skeleton hanging in my own closet that is begging to be unwound and turned into something worthy of the yarn. Yvonne grew up in San Francisco’s Eureka Valley, just east of Twin Peaks where the famous fog stops when it comes rolling in from the Pacific Ocean. From her front window, she could see the fog sitting on the peaks and the sun shining in downtown San Francisco. It’s been many years since she lived in San Francisco but being part of this collection has brought her back to the sun and fog. Eureka Valley Shawl is an asymmetric triangular shawl worked in stockinette and lace. Slipped stitches in the stockinette section show off a variety of yarns beautifully especially multi-colored yarns. I struggle with feeling pressured as a designer at times. I have to invent the next big thing, design some thing that will go viral or I could be irrelevant, am I getting older and outdated? Are my social values apparent enough in my work and how I treat others? Is my online presence strong enough? think these are questions that most designers face at some point or another. While I love the work of my colleagues, sometimes I need to stop looking at my feed so that I don’t get caught into a self comparison trap! When I went to @knitwityarnshop The other day, and I was perusing all the incredible colors they have to offer of all the different yarns, I found myself asking “what color is popular right now? What color do people like? “ I asked myself this on my birthday. And after about a half hour of indecisiveness, I decided to erase the board and then I asked myself “what color speaks to you?” And I grabbed a skein in less than a minute. That’s what I will be designing the second version of this in. Sometimes we just need to listen to ourselves a little better and try to steal the voices of what other people will think. As somebody who has struggled with codependency, this can be a difficult task for me, but a very worthy one. Are you letting too many outside voices in? Flash back to when I first created our Chicago labels. I was desperate to model them. But truth be told, I didnt know how to knit or crochet! So I used one of my daughters store purchased hats to model them. Then I had people ask what the pattern was or the yarn. And Im all over here like.....ummm Target. Cat & Jack variegated. Talk about embarrassing haha! Needless to say, I am proud that I can now make handmade hats to model our tags. They may be basic, but hey... progress is progress. P.S. It’s September already! The summer holidays seemed to whizz by in a flash. But I am going to try to make September much slower by taking some time this month to post more under the #yarnfriendsrock and #slowseptember #secondhandseptember hashtags. The #yarnfriendsrock hashtag was started by @attic24 @hookonepurlone @unicornpuffsandrainbows and @sewing_the_seeds_of_love - thanks guys! The first prompt is all about me. So here I am behind the scenes at the last @insidecrochet shoot, dressing the gorgeous @miamauge in one of my own creations. I’m a texiles designer, craft stylist and consultant, editor, author and teacher and I am the mother of two wonderful girls. I have worked for many publications, productions, design and yarn companies in the past and I try my hardest to juggle all these things working from home and sharing childcare with my husband who is also a freelance creative. But it can be hard, especially when homeschooling was thrown into the mix, as I am sure many of you will appreciate! This picture shows me doing what I enjoy most - making yarny stuff look cute. When I started my business fifteen years ago, I was the Creative Director at Jordan Winery. When I began to choose fabric for the guest suites at Jordan, childhood memories from Peru came rushing in. I was inspired by all the tales I remembered from my girlhood of the Incas and alpacas and a fleece that was called The Gold of the Andes. I was so excited. I could not sleep for days. I was going to make luxurious alpaca textiles for the suites of the winery. At that time, alpaca textiles were available primarily for fashion and not interior design. I traveled to Peru to source fiber and found a mill to manufacture the very best, pure alpaca. For the redo of the winery suites, I decided on a palette of 5 colors, colors present at harvest time in the California wine country. Its to these beginnings that I will return to for the launch of our latest collection - coming this winter. Its called The Harvest Collection and offers a curated selection of some of my very favorite textiles over the years - reaching back to those early, promising days. I recently got back a bunch of roving from Morro Fiber Works in Morro Bay, CA. These yummy rovings all feature wool from Northern California sheep. Clockwise from the upper left hand corner - 1. Corriedale wool/unbleached Tussah Silk, 2. Merino x Cormo x Wensleydale wool/Suri alpaca, 3. Merino x Wensleydale x Lincoln, 4. Merino x/bleached Tussah silk.🐏 .
