This face is why I support ethical breeding. Because no dog deserves to suffer like Shady has. No dog deserves to be diagnosed with a lifelong autoimmune disease at 8 months old and then a bone/tissue disease that requires orthopedic surgery at 10 months old AND before the first disease is even STABILIZED. Because no dog deserves to go to the vet more often than they play with friends. BECAUSE EVERY DOG DESERVES A CHANCE AT A LONG HEALTHY LIFE. Let me clarify. I have no issue with adoption. I truly believe every dog deserves a loving home. I have an issue with people who choose backyard breeders over other options... because they want a purebred, but can’t afford a well bred dog from genetic and health tested lines. BYB dogs are never going to be cheaper in the long run- just wait for the medical issues to hit. To clarify more: Rhett is from a very amazing breeder. He was expensive. His pedigree is healthy. His breeder talked to me for hours, answered ALL my questions. I met his parents and siblings. I got their health papers. He’s registered. He’s healthy. Shady was rescued from a BYB. I spent more on shady in ONE WEEKEND of medical bills alone than I did to buy Rhett from a reputable breeder. Shady has not gone more than FIFTEEN DAYS without seeing a vet. Rhett has NEVER had issues that come from poor breeding or genetics. Just simply goofy and non environmental “big dog problems” that are a risk with ANY large breed... Shady is broken in more ways than one and the vet is his second home. Dogs like Shady deserve a loving home as much as dogs like Rhett. So rescuing is important. But rescue isn’t always what people think or say. Shady is the reality behind many rescues. A poorly bred, genetically fucked up dog that has gone through HELL who ends up with us- his unsuspecting and unconditionally loving family who is now several thousand dollars in the hole trying to give him the life he deserves. Rescue dogs are not always cheaper. I envy those of you who rescued and had zero issues. SHADY UPDATE: The bad news doesn’t end. We didn’t expect to be ITP warriors AND we surely didn’t expect our story to continue with pain, suffering, and anger. Shady’s limp has been diagnosed: osteochondrosis dessicans (OCD) of the shoulder. Essentially a flap of cartilage in his shoulder has separated from the underlying bone, exposing nerves in the bone and causing inflammation. Treatment involves surgery with an orthopedic surgeon. Recovery is several months long and picking a date for his surgery is more challenging since we are still dealing with ITP. Our current goal is to get him off steroids as quickly as we can (safely) so we can get him on NSAIDS without causing ulcers. We want to reduce the swelling and pain as much as possible before surgery. His X-rays were sent to a top specialist in the state for a second opinion. Once reviewed, the specialist and my vet will help us plan the best possible path for his surgery. The outcome after surgery and a long recovery (and possibly PT) is very promising. Again this is all caused by piss poor genetics and severely worsened by the months of extreme neglect he dealt with. My heart hurts that this poor baby has more to endure. It’s not fair. But everyday I’m more thankful he ended up here with us.... we will make ends meet and we will get him on the road to recovery yet again. This is Tina. She’s almost three years old and she could be your soul mate. #adoptable I met her yesterday at the local SPCA. She became rowdy at the offer of a walk and was immediately removed from the building. Outside, Tina did some jumping and nipping. This is the kind of excitement that her adopters may want to channel into productivity (like #gitboots or #preparepicnic) before outings. We practiced stopping, sitting, and not biting each other on the way to the car. She seemed pretty happy on our drive, but 120km to a big waterfall warrants a mental health stop (off the highway at the river). This is where she showed me a special skill: her shoulder slip (probably patent-pending) for taking off harnesses. I distracted her with a snack back into the car before she could finish her whole performance (I’d seen enough to get the gist). I tightened her harness until her probably-patent-pending move no longer worked. After getting her dressed in two collars (makes it harder to slip off her head), a harness, a connector (harness to lower collar), and two leashes (one looped around my body and one in hand) we were safe and ridiculous enough looking to hit some trails. We started on an unpopulated trail just to see what kind of team we made. Prancing along behind Tina, I felt like I had my own wolf escort. We made an OK team so we went down the road to a busy spot with the big waterfall. There were humans and dogs here, but also the most threatening creature to our team’s safety: the chipmunk. We were somehow able to remain relatively composed in the presence of all this excitement. I never heard a bark and she watched other dogs with only a big tail wag. Service dogs aren’t here for the publics entertainment... A few days ago I was working an order at Target - with Nala bean of course - and I had to put Nala in a down stay so I could reach a yogurt on a top shelf. (Yes I am short lol). And a lady came over, crouched down, about 2 feet away from Nala, and started talking to her saying “aren’t you cute, so cute, so good, why are you laying down, are you tired??” etcc. Nala held her own, and had a facial expression of “lady I’m working here leave me alone”.... but I was getting so annoyed, so, I finally said “hey, that’s just her temperament, service dogs are supposed to be a little bit laid back and calm in public” and she was like “oh honey, I know!!”. I was totally thrown off by her attitude towards me. I said “it’s best not to distract a service animal, but if you have any questions, you can talk to me”. And then she answers with the same “oh honey, I’m good”. Just her attitude, ugh. ⠀ So now that I rambled about this encounter, I just wanted to make it apparent that talking to a service animal is considered a distraction. If you have questions, that’s totally normal, just address the handler and ignore those hard working dogs. I actually get emotional thinking about how proud I am of Holden and all that he’s done. He’s the guy who takes 28 credits while working full time, coaching high school football, and being a young men’s advisor at church. He did all this (while dealing with me, which is probably his biggest feat) plus being a part of @utahfootball and STILL managed to graduate a year early with a close to perfect GPA. He’s my biggest inspiration and best example of work ethic and drive that I know. Friday morning {early!} when I was driving into the gym — I was singing as loud as possible to the radio, getting into the right mindset for my workout and was suddenly OVERWHELMED WITH GRATITUDE. Gratitude for all the things — My job, hubby, coaching, being able to go to a CrossFit class, working with my coaches one-on-one.. Friday night before my run at the barrel race, I was total opposite 😂 — stressed, hangry {yes, you read that right}, annoyed that the generator wasn’t working, etc... then I was reminded of that morning and all the gratitude feels. I instantly thought — you AND ONLY you have control of your attitude right now. Yes, your hungry. Yes, your tired. Your also blessed to be here, at this barrel race with your hubby and friends. Your blessed to have that trailer, with a bed to sleep in. Your blessed to have someone at home taking care of the animals there. Here’s the deal: you can change your attitude in a matter of seconds. Literally, seconds. Recognize how your acting, how your feeling and remember what your grateful for. It’s impossible to feel negative emotions when your practicing gratitude.
