Capable of getting into just about anything, raccoons have some of the most nimble hands seen in nature. In fact, this species was actually named for its skillful paws, with the word raccoon coming from the Powhatan word “aroughcun” - when translated, this means “animal that scratches with its hands”. While most animals rely on sight, scent, or sound to hunt, these mammals depend on their sense of touch to locate food. To heighten this sense, raccoons will do something called dousing, in which they wet their paws in order to stimulate nerve endings. Their characteristics allow them to take advantage of all food sources (located by smell) & habitats, w/o directly competing with specialists. They are plantigrade, with heavy builds, long claws for foraging, & omnivorous dentition.

Un macho de nombre Capacho logro salirse de su recinto en la Isla de los Osos luego que una rama cayera sobre la cerca de electricidad desactivándola Capacho logro nadar a través de la fosa de seguridad y estuvo rondando el área, entretenido con la vegetación y marcando territorio. Al percatarse de la situación el personal de nuestro #parquebararida activo los procedimeintos de seguridad. Los cuidadores de animales y supervisores de Manejo y Salud Animal se abocaron a monitorear al oso e intentar atraerlo hacia su recinto mientras el personal de seguridad resguardaba el área y los médicos veterinarios preparaban el equipo necesario. El ejemplar en ningún momento salio del área ni de las instalaciones del zoológico. A las 11:20 am ya había sido capturado con el uso de anestesicos y retornado a los cubiles de su recinto con las respectivas medidas de seguridad. Este es un hecho aislado pues no había sucedido anteriormente. Esta situación responde más a la curiosidad del ejemplar que aprovechó la oportunidad, pues Capacho es alimentado adecuadamente y se encuentra en muy buena condición corporal, como pudo observarse en las numerosas imágenes y videos que fueron tomadas por los vecinos que presenciaron los hechos. Todo se resolvió satisfactoriamente sin daños para las personas ni para el animal que se encuentra sano, salvo y a buen resguardo. Zoo Knoxville is hosting its final “Craft Bear Night” of the season this Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. This family-friendly evening features craft beers from local breweries, a food truck and an Octoberfest-inspired menu from their own chef. Selected craft beers from local breweries will be available for purchase all day and at 5:00 p.m. a food truck arrives and special menu items will be offered at the zoo’s restaurants. Wine, other beer selections, and non-alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase. On Thursday, Oct. 1, brews from @elst_beer and @alliancebrewing will be featured along with @enjoylatinfood food truck. The zoo’s special menu includes an Octoberfest sausage trio, Guinness bratwurst, wienerschnitzel on a stick, three-cheese spätzle, cheeseburgers, and giant Bavarian pretzels. A general admission ticket is required for ages 4 and up. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Annual passholders and Circle of Friends members get free entry and parking. All food and beverage are an additional purchase and valid I.D. is required for beer and wine purchases. The Wildlife Initiative has recently gone forward with a research project where they trapped five Lynx and put the collars on them. The collars will fall off after a few months but the purpose of them is to track the movements of the Lynx. If their movements can be traced, Zoologists can better understand their patterns and aid them. This form of trapping is completely legal and the Lynx are released without harm after getting the collar. The results will be out this fall (Kowitz). As one of the highest-altitude-dwelling mammals, the Himalayan marmot relies on its thick fur for survival through the extreme cold. Borea Adventures has been nominated for the Nordic Council Environmental Prize and were very proud of it. This year´s emphasis is on biodiversity and we are nominated for the conservation of the Arctic Fox in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve through sustainable tourism. The Arctic fox is the only original land mammal in Iceland and as such plays an important role in Icelandic nature. The density of arctic foxes in Hornstrandir is the highest in the world. This has created the perfect opportunity for us to be the advocate for the Arctic fox, teaching about their behaviour, the importance of the animal in the ecosystem and protection for generations to come. The arctic fox is struggling in many areas in the Nordic region due to loss of habitat, influx of red foxes and hunting and is one of the key species of IUCN for climate change. They have been hunted all over Iceland for hundreds of years due their appetite for livestock and birds, though they‘ve been blamed for more then they deserve. Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs!
