We don’t get just one week. We don’t get just one month. It may be a highlighted hashtag during September, but it doesn’t stop when the posts and the conversations and the orange stories do. Suicide. You don’t get it until you get it. The first time I thought about suicide, I was seventeen. In the almost four years I’ve been married, I’ve had to sit my husband down to tell him I was suffocating under the temptation of it twice. I’ve had friends who have attempted it; I’ve been the one to drive the car to the psych hospital because suicide was inevitable for the people I loved. Suicide. The church struggles to address it because it feels so anti what the Good Book teaches us, and sometimes there are darknesses we don’t know how to talk about. Those are the darknesses we MUST talk about. Suicide. Those who live in suicide’s grasp are dubbed “selfish,” or “faithless,” and those who admit to having carried the torments of a suicidal mind are labeled “attention seeking,” and are lectured about how they have too much to live for to be “that sad.” Suicide. It doesn’t take just a week or a month for someone to talk themselves into suicide. Someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts can have a “bad day” or a “hard season,” where everything is a little bit harder, but they are still struggling with the battle of their own mind even when they are laughing with their best friend in the car or playing board games with their family. The mind of someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts doesn’t just “get better”— and while there are definitely good days and the thoughts aren’t always dark and twisty—the mind can still go there. So if your loved ones have come forward this week and said they are struggling with suicidal tendencies, don’t stop checking on them in November. Don’t make them feel like they should have “moved on” because they are smiling. That’s how we lose people—when we stop asking them how we can help. Get better at listening. Get better at being the one to start the conversation for the sake of the people hurting. Don’t make it just a week or a month. Be aware. Link in bio. #thespacewevegot This record was first presented at the homonyms exhibition at Taka Ishii, Tokyo and now is finally available digitally! “The Space We’ve Got (a Proposal for the 10th Tokyo Biennale’s Between Man and Matter).” was planned as a proposal for the mentioned exhibition which took place in 1970. Such enterprise for which the art critic Yusuke Nakahara served as commissioner, was an innovative effort for representing works by a diverse and international group of artists working in the styles of Post-Minimalism, Arte Povera, and Mono-ha at the time. It accurately communicated the current state of contemporary art and addressed broader cultural conditions by allowing many of the artists to produce or alter their works on site in Japan in response to the local environment. In recent years, the feeling we’re going through something unlike anything the world has known before has gained momentum. Concepts like the Anthropocene have lately been subject to renewed scrutiny. If we cop to living in that era—said to have begun when human activity first exerted irreversible impacts on the earth’s ecosystems—we have finally acknowledged that non-human organisms also enjoy a preponderant place in the world. Such concepts have decidedly changed our understanding of the planet. This record, as well as the exhibition which it is part of, serves to echo that notion, devised to live outside our culturally conscious frame of reference. Each of the woks in it conceive of the world within a larger spectrum—a perspective that does not depend on the immediacy of our “proven” knowledge, but rather, that provides a space of skepticism, and eschews any insistence on explaining the world we live in. In this vision, geological time is related to obsolete scientific theory; universal space connects to ancient knowledge and collective wisdom is associated with uncertainty. Made on a base of medium density foam to which I have applied several layers of primer. The chrome plating process is carried out through a base layer of silver nitrates that must be left to dry for a few hours at a temperature of 32 ° C, then a catalyst is applied to create a chemical reaction with which the chrome effect comes out. We are thrilled to announce that Perfidia by Sky Hopinka, co-published with the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College is now available for pre-order on our website (Link in bio). ⁠ Sky Hopinkas Perfidia moves within the textured landscape of memory, both personal and collective, to address the founding colonial violence of the United States and its lasting impact. In a series of cantos, the book-length poem surfaces a first-person narrative amidst the stream of history and its accounting through the voices of ancestors and kin. Shifting registers between the embodied and the spiritual, Perfidias subjective syntax destabilizes entrenched colonial perspectives and concomitant descriptions of land, sky, sea, myth, place, and personhood.⁠ ⁠ Perfidia sits at the center of Hopinkas most recent body of filmic work, which draws from the poems sixteen cantos and its previous iterations. These filmic works include the short film Lore (2019), the 2-channel video installation Cloudless Blue Egress of Summer (2019), the feature-length film maɬni (2020), and the photo series The Land Describes Itself (2019).⁠ ⁠ Perfidia is published on the occasion of Hopinka’s solo exhibition Centers of Somewhere at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (October 17, 2020 – February 14, 2021). The publication features a foreword by CCS Bard Director of Graduate Programs and Chief Curator, Lauren Cornell, and an introduction by Los Angeles-based curator and critic, Julie Niemi, who initiated the project with Hopinka in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2019, and edited the book. Copies available from @overlapse via the link in my bio, proceeds directly go towards @chooselove 💛 Some more info about the project: Photographing in Calais over a period of two years, from November 2014 through December 2016, I documented refugees and migrants arriving there with the ultimate aim of reaching the UK. Several different camps in the area have served as temporary homes for countless people escaping war, torture and persecution in their home countries. The crisis is ongoing, and at this location near the narrowest part of the English Channel (separating mainland Europe from Great Britain), around 300 to 600 migrants at a time are now present in makeshift encampments. The camps are places of in-between, where lives are suspended and disrupted while people seek protections and await bureaucratic validation in order to continue, in a legal sense. Settlements are under constant threat of being destroyed by French authorities, and violent interactions with police have created an ongoing struggle in Calais. My aim is to challenges the perception of refugees and migrants with a view of intimate moments created after building trusting relationships – a response to a lack of awareness and intimacy that has fuelled negative stereotypes and racism. A minimum of £1 from each copy of El Dorado sold will be donated to @chooselove. They support refugees across Europe and the Middle East by ensuring that vital humanitarian aid reaches them when they need it most. Mobilising quickly, they find local organisations doing the most effective work and give them what they need to help people fleeing war, persecution and poverty - whether it’s funding, material aid or volunteers. - @melissaarras on Instagram
