R E V I E W ✨ The Grip of It by Jac Jemc ✨ This was a fast read for me, I read it over 24 hours, and wow, did I start feeling weird after rushing through emotions alongside the characters! I felt like I was in a haunted house too by the end, and fully expected weird figures and unknown rooms appearing in my own house. Perhaps it’s because we own our (rickety old) house and have been doing major renovations for the last few years, that this struck such a chord with me? It’s the the perfect little ‘haunted house with two young professionals trying to work out what’s external and internal threats while going slightly (?) nuts’-book, and just what I wanted. I loved the author’s style (quite special, and a little clipped but it worked so well in this context) and the alternating chapters between Julie and James. I really enjoyed how not everything had a perfect explanation, and I felt very safe in the hands of the author that she knew exactly where she was leading the reader. The more literary slant to horror suits me perfectly. The fact that Julie and James didn’t know what was real either at times made it quite claustrophobic! I completely get why the book and author was showered with award nominations on publication. If you’re looking for a very well-written haunted read about a very spooky house, with a tragic history in a sad little town, that will take your mind for a ride, pick this up! ★★★★☆ ••• A chilling literary horror novel about a young couple haunted by their newly purchased home. Touring their prospective suburban home, Julie and James are stopped by a noise. Deep and vibrating, like throat singing. Ancient, husky, and rasping, but underwater. “That’s just the house settling,” the real estate agent assures them with a smile. He is wrong. Like the house that torments the couple living within its walls, The Grip of It oozes with palpable terror and skin-prickling dread. Its architect, Jac Jemc, meticulously traces Julie and James’s unsettling journey through the depths of their new home as they fight to free themselves from its crushing grip. Newsflash. Soul Pride retreat is joining forces with their big sister Wonderment a week earlier than previously advertised. A match made in United healing heaven. Following the announcement from the Government, we have been working very closely with the venue and local authorities in the last few days to understand the implications for our event. The new law of limiting social gatherings to 6 people does not include or impact educational events, sporting events or gyms, studios, campsites, restaurants and bars. Especially outdoor events adhering to all pre and new Covid-19 regulations which of course, @Wonderment Retreat and @Soul Pride are. Based on this and with the support of the venue, Wasing Park Estate, we are pleased to confirm our event will go ahead. We have decided to combine our Soul Pride retreat which was to take place between 25th – 27th September with iWonderment Retreat taking place between 17th – 20th September. The reason for this is so we can unite all members of both beautiful communities in one weekend, where EVERYBODY is welcome. (Since 1908) Hamel Brooms is located at 1411 King St N in St Jacobs, about 1.5 hours from Toronto. The town of St Jacobs is a popular destination for Toronto residents and features a farmers market, pedlars market, antique market and more. The community of St. Jacobs is located in southwest Ontario, just north of Waterloo in Woolwich Township, Waterloo Region. It is a popular location for tourism, due to its quaint village appearance, retail focus and Mennonite heritage. Waterloo Region is still home to the largest population of Old Order Mennonites in Canada, particularly in the areas around St Jacobs and Elmira. They are often seen on the local roads using their traditional horse and buggy transportation; many also use horses to pull the implements in their farm fields. The two settlements near St. Jacobs were Conestoga and Winterbourne. The latter was settled primarily by English and Scots while St. Jacobs, like Conestoga, was primarily Germanic. This area on the Conestogo River was settled starting in 1830.Early arrivals included the Simon Cress family, Abraham Erb, and John B. Baumann (or Bauman). A significant influx did not happen until the early 1850s. Most of the settlers were Mennonites from Pennsylvania, so-called Pennsylvania Dutch. The word Dutch does not refer to the Netherlands but is a misnomer for Deitsch or Deutsch (German). They became known as Old Order Mennonites due to their conservative lifestyle. (Other Mennonites in the area have a less conservative lifestyle.) Alex knew his drug misuse was spiraling out of control, but he never saw himself as an addict. Until one day, nearly seven years ago — by chance — the 41-year-old Boston transplant came upon a Narcotics Anonymous meeting within Berkshire County. Alex — he asked that his last name not be used — decided to join the gathering and see what NA was all about. The decision to learn about the 12-step program for people with varied substance use problems likely was a lifesaver. By the very first meeting, I knew I was an addict, he told an Eagle reporter. Alex says he has been clean and sober since then, with the help of Bob, a North Adams man in recovery through NA for the past 34 years. Alex and Bob were extolling the effectiveness of NA and telling their stories to those taking part in the Voices of Recovery self-guided tour Saturday. The downtown walk focused on organizations available to help addicts unclench the grip that drugs and alcohol have on them and, for many, become a vital part of their community again. Aquí tampoco vas a encontrar las típicas coronas flores, sino pequeñas piedras, siguiendo las costumbres judías. Para ellos, poner una piedra contribuía simbólicamente a la formación de la tumba. Es un tributo al muerto. La piedra, a diferencia de las flores, tiene la particularidad de ser una creación muy antigua y de vida muy larga, de cierto modo las piedras son “eternas” ¿no?. I’m especially nourished by the remembrance that there are seeds that, in fact, germinate best in cool soils ⭐️ spinach, claytonia, mache ⭐️ and others which simply dont hesitate (much) ⭐️ kale, arugula, radish, cilantro ⭐️ so who are we to think this is the 11th hour? Weve plenty of time, especially if we slow down to thank the seeds, the sun, the soil & thank our ancestors, both plant & human, who defied the odds more than well ever know. We reap what we sow. When the shock of lockdown subsided, I pulled my socks up and started raising money for @mindcharity by taking doorstep portraits in my local area. Shortly afterwards, #holdstill2020 was announced and this is the picture I’ve chosen to enter. For 29 years, I have worked to make @TheAbbeyWeho @TheChapelWeho @WithinWeho a safe place for our community to come together in good times and bad. Never in almost three decades, did I think I would have to post a message like this. For the safety of our staff, guests and entire community, The Abbey will be closed temporarily. Just saying those words breaks my heart. I spend every day at The Abbey. It is my life. I know this will hurt my staff, some of which have been with me for 29 years, my loyal guests who have made The Abbey part of their lives, and my community, who will no longer have The Abbey as a safe space to support each other during this crisis. The situation with COVID-19 is changing quickly. I don’t know whether we will be closed for a few days, a few weeks or even longer. Until our public health officials can assure us that it is safe, we will remain closed. I am saddened that it has come to this. If staying open caused the pandemic to spread more quickly, I would be inconsolable. I know this crisis will pass. When it does, we will all celebrate together. Стоит любить с пофигизмом, не сканируя любимых людей своим придирчивым внутренним МРТ на предмет скрытых патологий... НЕТ НИКАКИХ ПАТОЛОГИЙ У ЛЮБИМЫХ, СЛЫШИТЕ? Потому что они - любимые... Потому что их всегда хочется обнять... Потому что и они не сканируют... Иначе нет любви...ни у нас, ни у них...есть жлобское затыкание своих прорех чужими головами... Стоит с пофигизмом воспринимать большее количество проблем, потому что драматизм не решил ещё ни одной из них, если что... Проблемы решаются там, где перед ними не замирают в священном ужасе, и где понимают, что чем ниже градус реакции, тем выше эффективность выхода из любого, самого патового положения... Стоит наделить изрядной дозой пофигизма и свои родительские истории, потому как стращать детей карьерой дворника, и приводить в пример себя, в несуществуще-идеальном детстве, в котором мы, вроде бы как, были мега послушными, мега старательными, мега НЕленивыми, мега мотивироваными на отличную учёбу - это очень скоро увидеть, как они отгородились от нас неумолимой стеной недоверия, разочарования, и тотального нежелания идти к таким совершенным людям со своими несовершенными проблемами... И жить пофигистично тоже, на мой взгляд, куда как лучше, нежели цинично-трагично, запредельно серьёзно, или напустив туману сакральности, изображая из себя всезнающих гуру... Гуру ты, или не гуру, а финал всё равно один... И увядание... И завершение процессов... И полный комплект человеческих необратимостей... И пожизненное заключение в собственном теле, с которым надо о многом договориться...
