♦️The Punishment of Tityus♦️⠀ ⠀ 👨🎨By: Titian⠀ ⠀ 📍Location: @museoprado⠀ ⠀ 📚According to myth, Tityus was the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Elara, the daughter of King Orchomenus. In order to hide his pregnant lover from his fiercely jealous wife Hera, Zeus hid Elara deep, deep underground, where should would give birth with the greatest of pain. ⠀ Tityus proved to be a raging, violent, irrepressibly lustful creature, and upon discovering his existence Hera was only too glad to use the giant to her own ends. She inspired Tityus to try to rape Leto, the arrogant mother of Apollo (god of light, music, and poetry) and Artemis (goddess of wisdom and the hunt).⠀ The two gods were always anxious to defend their mother and easily shot Tityus down with their arrows. However, they were unable to kill the monster: as a son of Zeus, Tityus was immortal. 📍🎨 Masolino da Panicale, Masaccio Solo due anni dopo lesordio, si colloca lavvio delle due opere capitali di Masaccio, la SantAnna Metterza e gli affreschi della cappella Brancacci. Da poco il pittore ha fatto lincontro fatidico con il più maturo Masolino da Panicale. Quando questi si trasferisce a Firenze è quasi quarantenne: sino a quel momento non ha lasciato alcuna traccia di sé, ma in città si afferma subito come una personalità eminente, con il suo stile che ha distillato le eleganze gotiche in figure di costruzione più solida ed essenziale. È un pittore valente, sicuramente più amabile dal gusto corrente. Non sono maestro e allievo, sono due colleghi che traggono luno dallaltro esempi preziosi, in uno scambio che li rende reciprocamente compatibili sul piano formale ma sempre ben identificabili. The myth of Lady Godiva is an old one. While she was a very real woman in the 11th century, the legend surrounding her is a bit more questionable. She was married to a man named Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and was a benefactor of many monasteries. As the legend goes, Leofric, Earl of Mercia, laid down oppressive taxes to the people of Coventry. After repeatedly asking her husband to relieve their people of this debt, he finally agreed - on the condition that she rode naked on horseback through the center of town. Lady Godiva did just that. She stripped off her clothes, leaving only her long hair available for any sort of modesty. Other versions of the myth say that before she rode out, she asked the townspeople to remain in their homes with their windows shut. 𝑻𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒛𝒛𝒂 Durante il Rinascimento i tondi erano, quasi esclusivamente, realizzati per uso privato e questo in particolare si pensa sia stato commissionato a Raffaello da Papa Leone X Medici per poi essere donato alla sua famiglia, a Firenze. La permanenza a Roma fa sì che Raffaello possa prendere spunto dallo stile michelangiolesco, come si può notare soprattutto nella fisicità del corpo del Bambino, sapientemente stemperata dal dolce stile dellurbinate. Il nome dellopera deriva dalla presenza della sedia (probabilmente quella ad uso esclusivo papale) dove è seduta la Madonna, la quale assume una posizione tenera e protesa verso il figlio e, con una gamba sollevata, ci esorta a pensare che lo stia cullando. Gesù bambino è il fulcro del quadro: dal suo gomito si dipana, immaginariamente, una spirale riscontrabile nelle curve presenti nellabbraccio della Vergine a suo figlio ed accentuate dalla sapiente alternanza di colori caldi e freddi utilizzati per dipingere le vesti dei personaggi. Ultimo protagonista dellopera è San Giovannino il quale affiora dalloscurità e porge alla Madonna una preghiera. Già nel 1764 il colto abate Matteo Jacuzio, raccoglieva e disponeva, in un corridoio sito presso la portineria e il cosiddetto «Chiostro dei Corvi», un certo numero di marmi, in prevalenza di età classica o medioevale, corredandone la sistemazione con unepigrafe che ne celebrava il recupero. Il compito si Jacuzio, dunque, fu quello di trasformare depositi già seicenteschi delle antiche memorie dell abbazia e delle sue preesistenze classiche rinvenute sul Monte e nel territorio circostante in un vero e proprio museo lapidario. - @parco_regionale_del_partenio on Instagram

Happy birthday to French artist Edgar Degas, who was born on this day in 1834. At the last Impressionist show in 1886, the 52-year-old Edgar Degas exhibited six nudes from a series of pastels on paper depicting women at their toilette. One of the things that I appreciate about the works from this period are the fact that the women are wholly absorbed in their bathing rituals, presented with a tone of matter-of-fact beauty rather than a lewd voyeurism. Provenienza: Pisa, Convento di San Domenico; Pisa, Camposanto Monumentale (1810); Pisa, Museo Civico (1906), poi Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, dal 1949. Raffigura il Matrimonio Mistico di Santa Caterina dAlessandria secondo liconografia prevalente dellultimo quarto del XIV secolo, che mostra la santa che si unisce in matrimonio con Gesù Bambino. La Vergine incoraggia il matrimonio, attirando il braccio di Caterina verso suo figlio in un grazioso gioco di gesti. La giovane principessa è vista di profilo, inginocchiata su un grande frammento della ruota dentata che simboleggia il suo martirio. As humans, we always have the desire to know what the future holds in advance, so that prevention could be made if anything bad occurs. Since the Ancient Greece, divination had already been an important part of everyday life. Various forms of oracles were used to ask for advice on either public or private affairs, but the most prominent one was probably the Oracle of Delphi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the antiquity, the Oracle of Delphi was regarded as the most prestigious and authoritative oracle among the Greeks. Not only from Greece, people from other countries around Europe would also make the journey to Temple of Apollo in order to ask their questions to Pythia, the high priestess who served as the oracle at Delphi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Little is known of how the Pythia was chosen, but the priestess was most likely selected at the death of her predecessor, from amongst a guild of priestesses of the temple. These women were required to have had a sober life and be of good character. Upon assuming their role as the Pythia, the priestesses had to cease all family responsibilities, marital relations, and individual identity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The job of a priestess, especially the Pythia, was a respectable career for Greek women. Under the title MADONNA CHILDREN the Grafikkabinett in the Kunstmuseum Basel Hauptbau will be showing a hitherto unexplored facet of the museums history by means of the rich archive material. On view until 24 January 2021. Encouraged by Margaret, Princess of Hesse and near the Rhine, the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt enabled 20 Darmstadt children aged between seven and thirteen to spend four weeks a year in Davos between 1953 and 1958. The new loans to be granted for this purpose formed a payment for the loan of the so-called “Darmstadt Madonna” by Hans Holbein the Younger to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On their journey from Darmstadt to Davos, the Madonna Children made regular stops at the Kunstmuseum Basel to view the painting. In addition to the Dresden painting, however, there was another version, which - after its later place of storage – is called the Darmstadt Madonna, also to distinguish the two versions from each other. In the 19th century, the question of which of the two versions was the original gave rise to the so-called Holbein dispute among artists, art historians and laymen. While artists and laymen clearly saw the original in the Dresden version, art historians finally came to the conclusion that the Darmstadt painting was the original. Meanwhile, the Dresden copy is attributed to Bartholomäus Sarburgh. Nel corso della permanenza a Firenze lUrbinate ebbe loccasione di studiare le opere dei grandi maestri attivi in città e si procurò le commissioni di alcune facoltose famiglie di mercanti. Vasari ne Le Vite riporta che questa tavola gli venne richiesta in occasione dello sposalizio fra Lorenzo Nasi e Sandra di Matteo Canigiani, celebrato il 23 febbraio del 1506. Nel 1547 la casa della famiglia Nasi fu travolta da una frana, e nello schianto lopera si ruppe in diciassette frammenti, i quali, una volta raccolti, furono affidati probabilmente a Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio che si occupò del restauro. Ignota rimane la sua sorte fino agli anni 1646-47, quando risulta registrata negli inventari della collezione appartenente al Cardinal Giovan Carlo de’ Medici. ——— Raffaello fu abile nel delineare figure caratterizzate da una bellezza ideale, armoniose e perfette nella loro semplicità, ma anche vitali e dinamiche per l’intenso scambio di sguardi e di gesti che le lega, nonché per la varietà aggraziata delle espressioni, rese ancor più naturali dallo sfumato leonardesco, impiegato anche per dissolvere il paesaggio all’orizzonte nell’atmosfera. We often talk about how the trusted use of coconut oil and sandalwood oil stems from generations of Tongan communities, so we thought it was time we drew from a slice of history as well. Pictured here is William Mariner - an Englishman who lived with the King of Tonga, Finau Ulukalala, from 1806-1810. His published account of the experience is known as one of the most intimate descriptions of Polynesian culture, and wed like to share an extract: Being now pretty well washed, I again came in the presence of the King, and was sent to the other end of the house, where I was oiled all over with sandalwood oil, which felt very agreeable, alleviating the smart of my wounds, and was greatly refreshing. - @feniu on Instagram
