Juan Cristóbal Gundlach. #Aniversario 2️⃣1️⃣0️⃣ de su #nacimiento. . . #FANJCuba #YoMeSumoAlViaje #AntonioNúñezJinénez #SacaTuLadoExplorador #JuanCristóbalGundlach - @fanjcuba on Instagram

One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Diggs celebrated his 100th birthday on June 6, 2020. Notably, he was the first African American person admitted to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD. Happy belated birthday, Dr. Diggs Here is a picture of Edward O. Diggs and family, c. 1951. Diggs, an alumnus of Winston-Salem Teachers College, was the first African American admitted to the University of North Carolina Medical School. From left to right are the Diggs children: Beverly Elise; Sharon Patrice; Edward O., II; Dr. Diggs wife Hazel G.; and Edward O. Diggs. - @wssu.alumni on Instagram

Carew Rice was born in 1898 in Barnwell, South Carolina. Rice began cutting his silhouettes in the early 1930s towards the end of the Charleston Renaissance, a time of cultural preservation and artistic renewal and growth in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. His grandson, Clay Rice, continues the family practice and has become an internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning silhouette artist and childrens book author. The Rice family’s silhouettes go beyond face profiles; their images also include detailed landscapes and lowcountry scenes. Credit line: Image 1: Carew Rice, “Silhouette,” 1933. Cut paper.
