I thought it was pressing one year ago when i published my book but we’ve reached a state of emergency for masculinity and we must act. Marjorie Taylor Greene, an openly racist, QAnon conspiracy theorist who is running as the GOP’s congressional candidate in Georgia, boldly contradicted the CDC’s guidance, proclaiming that children shouldn’t wear masks because “forcing boys to wear masks is emasculating.” COVID-19 is killing people from all demographic groups, but men (especially those who aren’t white) have been disproportionately affected. In England, Black men—who are dying three times the rate of white men—have the highest mortality rate of any other group. The same thing is happening in America, with men overrepresented in the death toll. And yet they are less likely to wear masks. And still, we propagate the idea that protection is unmanly, and that boys must put themselves and others at risk to prove they have value in our society. Boys are not soldiers, they are humans. We are all fighting a war against this virus, and we all need to remember that every arbitrary division of the old world order like gender or race makes us all weaker in the face of it. Children are human, they have emotions, they hurt and they feel pain, they are not for anyone to treat like a property. Many people are in therapy because their parents raised them this way, they shouted at them instead of communicating with love which silenced their voice, they beat them instead of finding alternative ways to show them that a actions have consequences which has them living in fear and anxious around making mistakes or failing, they embarrassed them to teach them a lesson which makes them tolerate abuse and humiliation later in life from people in their lives, they asked them things like where is the other 1 percent when they did their best instead of affirming and celebrating them and helping them do better which makes them seek external validation and struggle to celebrate themselves. I could go on and on about how parenting like how most of our parents did affects us later on in life, if we are to create a less violent generation as Africans (and other nationalities), that is thriving holistically we have to unlearn some of the things that our parents taught us through and how they raised us if it is not serving us fully. We have to remember how it made us feel and want better for our kids, our parents didnt have the resources but we do and we can do better. Conscious parenting is not easy, it requires more intentionality, patience, learning and unlearning but it is worth it.
