🖤The Great Lynn Shelton🖤 While first assembling a roster of directors in 2012, I wrote a long-shot and very effusive letter to a hometown hero of mine, asking her to join our fledgling Seattle production company. To my astonishment, later that day Lynn showed up in our office, completely enthusiastic for what we were doing, and signed the papers on the spot. Not long after that first meeting Lynn’s career in television took off, and she rarely had time for commercials. But she stayed with our company through 2017, adding huge credibility and validation during a critical period of our growth. As opportunities grew and accolades piled up, she never lost touch with the Seattle film community that meant so much to her. She stayed totally grounded, returning every email and phone call, and engaged wholeheartedly while sharing advice with me and I assume every other aspiring filmmaker who got to know her even for a moment. The news of her death is devastating. The entire production community in Seattle was blindsided by the loss of their charismatic leader. No one was so alive as Lynn, so how could she be the first to die? Lynn followed her heart and made the films she wanted to make and found success doing it. That legacy fuels the determination of so many who came after her, which will continue. In each of our toughest moments, Lynn’s example keeps us going. I wish I could have said thank you. Delivered the whip from SF to LA the other day with the help of my good friend Corey Warren @loveyerland ! The trip was a 3 day 9 hour shakedown complete with ripped sails from heavy wind and 20’ waves breaking across the whole Chanel through the San Francisco bar. With sweaty hands I checked the forecast day after day and with bated breath I kept a few friends on the hook for crew. For more than two weeks I was hopeful and then discouraged and then hopefull again as the seastate rumbled to life from the north pacific systems and then would surprisingly subside against the said forecasted conditions and become mellow and tame. I wasn’t going to leave with 45knot winds on the horizon for a week straight or short period swell for days. I checked NOAA, windy, local weather reports and was in contact with my friend Kevin @kwallissurfline to share my understanding and bounce my trip ideas of him. I can’t thank these guys enough for their help and wouldn’t have been able to do the trip without them. To get the boat to LA during the super blood wolf moon eclipse was an amazing feeling and a perfect end to an adventure filled with whales and dolphins, surfing pelicans and some of the most amazing sunsets and sunrises. Being offshore in the north pacific in the winter definitely isn’t for everyone and proves challenging every time I do that trip. It’s a humbling experience I never forget and am happy to have had the opportunity to test my boat in these conditions and can confidently say I have a quality boat that can withstand the grit, it will be a pleasure to pass it on to the next owner. 📷’s by Corey - @footemachine on Instagram

Dad died 3 years ago today. Thinking about him, and the beautiful send off we gave him at the field soon after. Here’s a picture of me and @danielsilvestertaylorlind carrying his coffin to the graveside with Ru and Claire of The Green Funeral Co. It took a good while to realise that he’s actually dead - I forgot occasionally the first few years. It also took a while to realise that parents can still parent you from beyond the grave. He shows up sometimes in my dreams, I hear his voice in my head and I often ask myself- would Dad do? Former NASA astronaut Frank Culbertson has the distinction of being the only American not on the planet when the 9/11 attacks occurred. . Culbertson was about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth — inside the still-under-construction International Space Station with two Russian cosmonauts — when he saw the huge column of smoke streaming from Lower Manhattan where the Twin Towers fell. Culbertson captured video and photos of the 9/11 site from space for NASA, while satellites also tracked the attack site from orbit. . The following day, he posted a public letter that captured his initial thoughts of the events as they unfolded. The world changed today. June 8, 2019 early morn- I was at the park city stages prepping for some coming months of hard work, excited, ambitious. I had planned for that weekend to be the beginning of implementing a list of goals and healthy changes into my life. Later that night I was rushed to the hospital from a Moto accident involving a car abruptly turning directly into me, and for the next couple months I’d question everything. With my health, work, passions, and freedom compromised, I sunk to what I hope will be my lowest low. I was not handling it well, and within a couple months I crashed again- but this time in my mind. Many of you were concerned about me, and as much as I’d like to say- ‘I was fine and it was no big deal’. I was not fine, and it was a big deal to me. So I can only continue to appreciate every one of you that reached out. I won’t go into detail about where I went and why, although I’d be happy to explain if you ask me personally. It was embarrassing, and overwhelming, but mostly humbling. The things I learned during my little hiatus are unteachable. Some real soul searching, glad to say I found what I was looking for. This past year has been a ladder to climb back to where I was mentally. When amazing opportunities arose in front of me with more highs and more lows, I’ve had to put forth an extra effort to focus and step up, all while continuing to recollect myself. With a bit of determination and solid support from my circle putting me back on track, I once again have energy for those around me. Of course there will be struggles, but it feels much better knowing that you have your people right there with you. I want to personally thank my friends and fam for being there for me when I needed it most, and I’m here to return the favor. I love you friends, reach out if you need help! FCB —————————————————— FCB was shot on my Alexa Mini with some very old Zeiss Superspeeds with light black promist on the front (Couldnt get my filtration of choice - black satin fx). This setup gave us a wonderfully soft texture, which really fit the period setting of the film. • We shot several sequences at the soundstage, mostly surrealistic metaphorical spaces for the debate between our main characters. The majority of it had us on the cinejib (read: hot dog) on tracks. It was what was available, and definitely not a setup that was changed quickly. However, considering that we had a large featured cast, it gave us the ability to run proper developing masters for all the scenes without having to focus too much on converage, which definitely helped the storytelling and scene pacing. It was also the only way we could cover the lion dance stuff up high! Its a beautiful thing though, to be able to move from a closeup 2.5m in the air to a wide on the ground. Ich sammel zurzeit super gerne die Samen und Blüten der wilden Möhre, die Samen des Breitwegerichs, Dostblüten und Schafgarbenblüten. Aber auch die Früchte werden langsam reif und die Kornelkirschen, Vogelbeeren und Holunderbeeren können mit in die Küche wandern. Von Vogelbeersirup, über Kornelkirschensauce bis hin zur Holunderbeerensuppe. Es ist einfach bunt und schön. Aber langsam heißt das auch Abschied nehmen. Last year, here I am sitting in my living room shooting an interview for #ThisIsParis. As I say in the film, usually I shy away from these types of interviews, but there couldn’t be a film about Paris without the person in the world that knows her best. That would be me. Last month we watched the film for the first time together...we laughed, we cried. It brought up so many memories and emotions. I am so incredibly proud of this woman for sharing her story. She has been judged, ridiculed, bullied..At the end of the day she is resilient, loyal and, most importantly, treats everyone the same. Just here to say how truly blown away I am by all the love and support for Drunk History. With everything going on in the world... just wow. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. In case you didn’t know, it was announced last week that Comedy Central is cancelling the show after 6 seasons. It is very sad (especially since we were halfway through filming our seventh season) but I am so unbelievably grateful for being allowed to have had a show on TV this long. It’s rare, and I know that, and I am so so lucky. And along the way I’ve worked with the best people in the world, truly. What an absolute joy this has been. @dw34 and I started this thing in 2007. He had a crazy idea and I had the enthusiasm and the camera to make it happen. We were just a couple kids in our friend’s mom’s backyard making videos for fun. And now here we are, in 2020: we made over 70 episodes of tv - filmed over 200 stories. Hundreds, if not thousands of cast and crew members have collaborated on this. And this year we have 3 Emmy nominations (please vote if you can). What a totally surreal world. This show has been a dream come true and has entirely defined my entire professional life. I guess just my life life too. Never in a million years could I have predicted this. Thank you Derek. Thank you to all our narrators. Thank you to our incredible cast and crew. Cheers. Salud. Kanpai. Хотя себе угодить еще сложнее, особенно когда со съемки много вкусных кадров, хочется все показать, а потом просто забиваешь из-за какой-то визуальной концепции инстаграмма и пиши пропало. This was the biggest adventure of my life. I can never talk about it without getting emotional. Moving to Australia for a year on my own at the age of 24 was the best decision I ever made. I LIVED in that magical 12 months. I saw beauty that I could never have imagined, I had adventures that are etched into my spirit and truly found my soul. I worked at Sony in Sydney, travelled on a greyhound bus the whole way up the entire east coast of the country staying at hostels as I went and having so many wonderful pure human experiences, lived and worked on a sailing yacht, battled my fear of heights traveling over the treetops in Cairns, breathed in the eucalyptus in the blue mountains, stung by a box jellyfish in Noosa, meditated in Nimbin, snorkelled in the middle of shark infested waters, twirled in the sand on Fraser Island, swam with wild dolphins in Tangalooma, visited the most stunning world heritage site where the Great Barrier Reef meets the Daintree Rainforest - travelled the river and both snorkeled and saw the reef by submarine, met truly wonderful people who had a profound effect on my life and so much more. I know at this time In the world the darkness can feel overwhelming but let’s hold onto the moments in our life where we felt truly alive. @rebekahwestover made this image of me as the Mad Hatter on the first day I owned my Contax 645. While I eventually sold it in favor of the Pentax 67, the Contax definitely cemented my love of film. This was made with the 80mm f2 lens and Fuji 400H film. It was developed and scanned by me on a Fuji Frontier. On Jikirag, I had three wishes: 1) Shoot on an ARRI Alexa, 2) Use anamorphic lenses, and 3) Deliver a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. This is easy enough to accomplish, but toss Netflix 4K standards into the mix and you have yourself a challenge. Math to the rescue! My ARRI Alexa Mini LF shoots 4.5K in Open Gate mode, which is fine for full frame primes, but you need full frame anamorphics to shoot 4K in LF 2.39 mode. Those are hard to come by as most lens manufacturers are still working on them. This is where the Zeiss Master Anamorphics emerged as the perfect fit. They cover enough of the sensor to get 3148x2636 in Open Gate mode after desqueezing and cropping into 2.39:1. The catch is you have to use 40mm or tighter to avoid vignetting, but the equivalent aspherical lens on a S35 camera is 22mm, which was plenty wide for our purposes (we also had an 8mm Ultra Prime for specialty shots). Shooting ArriRAW meant more colouring room in post, but it also resulted in 96 hours and 42TB of footage, so make sure you have the hard drive space!
