Today we celebrate the posthumous birthday of the multi-talented Ernie Barnes, he would’ve been 82. Mr. Barnes’ iconic images are some of the first artworks we collected, first starting with prints and building up to originals, with 8 now featured in the collection. In the late 70’s, rather than giving plaques for stellar work performance, Bernard Kinsey would award prints of Barnes’ “High Aspirations” to his team at Xerox. Ernie became a good friend of the family over the years, and passed away in 2009. We honor the life and brilliance of Ernie Barnes today - and are overjoyed that he is beginning to receive the art world recognition that he has deserved for decades. Happy Birthday Ernie! #SubmarineSunday ⚓ On July 31, 1945 USS Bullhead (SS-332) left Fremantle, Australia on her third war patrol. They were headed to the Java Sea to join a wolfpack with USS Capitaine (SS-336) and USS Puffer (SS-268); then, on September 5, they proceeded to Subic Bay to patrol on their own. Bullhead arrived in the area on August 6, but Capitaine did not arrive until August 13. On August 12, Capitaine ordered Bullhead to take position the following day in a scouting line with Capitaine and Puffer. There was no reply and on August 15, Capitaine reported, Have been unable to contact Bullhead by any means since arriving in area.” At the time, the area was fairly crawling with subs—USS Cod (SS-224), USS Chub (SS-329), Capitaine, and Puffer, as well as the British HMS Taciturn and HMS Thorough— it is difficult to point to one Japanese anti-submarine attack as the one which sank Bullhead. However, the most likely one occurred on August 6, 1945, when an enemy army plane attacked with depth charges (when Bullhead was presumably cruising on the surface off the coast of Bali). The pilot claimed two direct hits, and for ten minutes thereafter, there was a great amount of gushing oil and air bubbles rising in the water. Since the position given is very near the Bali coast, it is presumed that the proximity of mountain peaks shortened Bullheads radar range and prevented her from receiving a warning of the planes approach. Bullhead was the 52nd and final American submarine lost during World War II. She was lost with 84 men aboard. May they never be forgotten. Bullhead is credited with sinking four enemy ships (1,800 tons), damaging three ships (1,300 tons). She also rescued three airmen from a downed B-29. 📸 1: USN photo Print of the Bullhead (SS-332). Under the title MADONNA CHILDREN the Grafikkabinett in the Kunstmuseum Basel Hauptbau will be showing a hitherto unexplored facet of the museums history by means of the rich archive material. On view until 24 January 2021. Encouraged by Margaret, Princess of Hesse and near the Rhine, the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt enabled 20 Darmstadt children aged between seven and thirteen to spend four weeks a year in Davos between 1953 and 1958. The new loans to be granted for this purpose formed a payment for the loan of the so-called “Darmstadt Madonna” by Hans Holbein the Younger to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On their journey from Darmstadt to Davos, the Madonna Children made regular stops at the Kunstmuseum Basel to view the painting. In addition to the Dresden painting, however, there was another version, which - after its later place of storage – is called the Darmstadt Madonna, also to distinguish the two versions from each other. In the 19th century, the question of which of the two versions was the original gave rise to the so-called Holbein dispute among artists, art historians and laymen. While artists and laymen clearly saw the original in the Dresden version, art historians finally came to the conclusion that the Darmstadt painting was the original. Meanwhile, the Dresden copy is attributed to Bartholomäus Sarburgh. Il Museo dell Abbazia di Montevergine ha una storia lunga . Già nel 1764 il colto abate Matteo Jacuzio, raccoglieva e disponeva, in un corridoio sito presso la portineria e il cosiddetto «Chiostro dei Corvi», un certo numero di marmi, in prevalenza di età classica o medioevale, corredandone la sistemazione con unepigrafe che ne celebrava il recupero. Il compito si Jacuzio, dunque, fu quello di trasformare depositi già seicenteschi delle antiche memorie dell abbazia e delle sue preesistenze classiche rinvenute sul Monte e nel territorio circostante in un vero e proprio museo lapidario. - @parco_regionale_del_partenio on Instagram
