So Im moving back from Austin after shooting #namelessthefilm in late 2014, and I decide to pitch camp for the night in the middle of nowhere Nevada. I turn down a dirt road that looks like a likely candidate, and after about a mile I see these horses running towards me. I quickly turn around to see where theyre headed, hoping itll make a good photo and - wow - theyre running towards a hill with a great background. The trusty 5D was already in the seat next to me...threw it in park... slammed on the telephoto, and rested the camera on the roof to get the right exposure for the hill. Today is World Rhino Day! In 2013, a founding population of 21 Black Rhino were introduced to Borana Conservancy. Once they were settled and had established their territories, the fence between Borana and neighbouring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was dropped forming one continuous landscape now known as the Lewa-Borana Landscape. This ecosystem allows the wildlife safe and free rein over 90,000 acres of intact African wilderness, making this one of East Africa’s largest continuous rhino habitat. In 2019, there were 17 black rhino births and 15 white rhino births across the Lewa Borana Landscape and it is now home to 114 black rhino and 97 white rhino. We cannot thank our partners and supporters enough for making this possible. In my formative years, youd find me buried into National Geographic Magazine with an unimaginable sense of curiosity. The images captivated my very core, and my spirit danced with insatiable wonder. Id often close my eyes, spin a globe and abruptly stop it with my finger. Wherever it ended up, I would fastidiously go on a research binge deeply trying to humanize and understand these distant places. I was drawn to cultures who seemingly harmoniously lived with nature and truly embodied ideas of community. I aspired to be more like them. Fast forward, I am 35 years old living in Colorado. Many aspirations have come true, and I have a conscious recognition of my privilege; however my insatiable spirit craves more. Not more things. More experiences. More passion, presence and purpose. Ive been working as an Outdoor Guide, Experiential Educator and Photographer for most of my professional life. Ive fostered incredibly special relationships with people around the world who grew up very different than I did. Theyve shaped my perspectives and left an indelible sense of compassion ingrained in my soul. I still look up to those unequivocally intertwined with the earth. Those whove persevered through true adversity with an unmatched sense of dignity,strength, humility and generosity. I want to give back the best way I know how. #WorldRhinoDay2020: Rhinos, it so happens, have carved a long and illustrious existence on the planet and used to be rather numerous, speciose, and widespread once upon a geological period in time. Several diverse species of rhinos have existed through the different stages of their evolutionary history spanning 30-34 million years. The largest and one of the first known rhino species to occur was the Paraceratherium which weighed up to 20 tonnes and stood 5 m. tall at the shoulder. It is known to be the largest land mammal to have ever lived! The origins of rhinos can be traced back to the group of animals called perissodactyls which were odd-toed hoofed animals or ungulates. Interestingly, the perissodactyls also happen to be the ancestors of present day horses, zebras and tapirs! The last of the woolly rhinos which lived alongside modern humans, are believed to have perished as recently as 10,000 years ago, as per the fossil record. According to reports, up until the early 20th century, nearly 500,000 rhinos roamed the grassy savannah habitats in Asia and Africa. Today, between the five extant rhino species - black rhino and white rhino in Africa and the greater one-horned rhino, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino in Asia - only 27,000-30,000 individuals remain. Rampant poaching for the horn, rapid habitat loss and climate change now threaten to wipe away these last vestiges of the glorious rhino lineage forever. Improving animal health in southern Africa—Why it matters and what to do. . In a new book chapter, Delia Grace, a veterinary epidemiologist and food safety expert at the International Livestock Research Institute, ILRI, in Nairobi, Kenya, reports that animal diseases are a threat not only to the livestock sector of southern Africa, but also to its economy (via reduced benefits from the region’s wildlife resources), and also to human health in the region. . We are currently in an era of unprecedented interest and advances in animal disease research, writes Grace. Much of the growth in demand for livestock products and generation of negative externalities occurs in [low- and middle-income countries], and these will be at the forefront of future research. I found this herd of tule elk while looking for pronghorn in the Carrizo Plain. They were extremely far away and I only noticed them because of really really small movements that caught my eye. Even with my 600mm lens, it was hard to determine what they were and the heat haze made it even more difficult. I approached them as carefully and quietly as I could but they noticed me well before I was close enough to get any kind of good shot. Still, the experience of being out there all alone for miles on end with the sun intensely bearing down on me while I watched and listened to these greats beasts is what makes this photo special to me. . . . Dreams haunted me for several nights after returning from my last trip to North Bengal, along the Nepal border. Where elephant expert/tireless documentarian of the conflict in this region, @avijansaha (photo above) trusted me as a partner to share some stories with a western audience. Each journey there has yielded gifts and wisdom. But, during the last one, the elephants were, without any shred of doubt, communicating a vital message —sage advice to us should we be open enough to receive it. Many people in this region hear their language loud and clear, and are fighting what seems at times an uphill battle to save the Asian elephants, but also to save the humans who live among them. Coexistence is the lesson here. A lesson we once all instinctively understood, but sadly have lost touch with. My dreams were of the elephants I met. They told me to act faster, to not hesitate. My part is only one voice in a stunning mosaic of voices and actions. Swipe ⬅️ Not long after I was born and going into the early nineties my dad used to bring me with to these parts of the Lower Luangwa on his anti-poaching opperations through DNPW or when he was hunting for himself. On the western side of the river in the game management area there was plenty of wildlife. On the eastern side in the open communal areas the wildlife was rapidly declining due to lack management from either a hunting or photographic operator. Funding for the anti-poaching, that he did, was limited and mostly out his own pocket, but never the less he tried his best. From the 2000’s private reserves started being established in the open areas on the eastern side. By the time I returned, big and brave, in 2009 the wildlife had already improved well. My job was set out for me to continue the efforts my dad had been doing. It was not a choice it was my responsibility. Through the private investment and funds from hunting revenue we have worked hard to restore these reserves back to what they were before man came and destroyed the wildlife. Fortunately the habitat was still intact and few animals still roamed the areas. In these situation all you have to do is protect it from ruthless poaching and discourage encroachment. This is harder done than said. Through collaboration with the wildlife department, community support and job creation we turned the tide and created one of the most succesful conservation areas in Africa. There are no parks nearby to feed wildlife to the reserves. This is all self-made. And as they say the proof is in the pudding. The herd pictured in the photos here was about 50 to 60 strong when I arrived. Now only 11 years later it has grown to 250 to 300. This is our achievement. The Staff, the anti-poaching scouts, the community, the investors, and last but most importantly the hunting clients. We have achieved this and will and will continue to achieve more. Thank you to all involved. The feeling I had when taking these pictures are indescribable and I am so happy that I can show my son what true conservation is and he will hopefully be able to show his kids on day. It’s World Rhino Day and time to pay homage to these ancient and most magnificent creatures! It’s hard to know the exact numbers, but rhino experts say only around 30,000 rhinos are left in the world and around 5,500 of these are the black rhino. Poaching for traditional Chinese medicine is the main reason for these dwindling numbers, which infuriates and sickens me as there is no scientific evidence to say that there is any medicinal benefit to consuming rhino horn! I think my favourite of the different rhino species is the black rhino (the one I’m working on here) - easily spooked, unpredictable and likely to turn tail and run into the nearest thicket as soon as it sees you. This one spun around and glared at me furiously - she had a calf which needed protection. It is also images that carry a lot of personal emotion because we try over and over again to get the right image. Very rarely do our images meet our expectations, so when we do get a reasonably sharp image in the right place (head or eyes), we are so excited that we dont take a step back look at the image from an unemotional point of view. *** OUR REVIEW: This image nails the point of focus and sharpness, the Lionesss eyes and head. Also, the planning blur horizontally is smooth, which shows that Sabine was very steady when she was panning with the Lioness. The exposure is perfect, which can be a tricky thing to get correct. The light is excellent, and I hope she managed to get some conventionally faster shutter speed photographs. So its a superb motion blur photograph thats technically correct. What I find fascinating is the exciting shapes and blur in front of the Lioness. Its abstract enough to make you look closer and make out what has caused the blur. Then you start to see hints of the wing, scaled against the Lioness, these are big birds, vultures I would assume. Thats when the story behind the images comes to light; we would not even need to read the description to understand this photograph. Thats compelling storytelling, especially in an image that is blurred and abstract. *** Great photograph, please leave your thoughts below. The natural world has much to teach us about tolerance and cooperation. Migrating wildebeest herds on the plains of East Africa seem to move as a solid mass, trampling life-giving nutrients into the soil as they surge towards their next destination. When faced with a river to cross, the animals often pause and wait for a brave individual to take the plunge triggering the rest of the herd into frenzied motion. But this chaos is organised. Travelling in huge numbers provides safety, particularly for the herd’s youngsters. Wildebeest have even been recorded taking turns sleeping at night ensuring that there is always a sentry on guard to sound the alarm if needed. The grass that wildebeest eat along their seasonal route is returned to the earth in the form of dung that fertilises the mineral-rich soil of the Serengeti – the perfect illustration of an ecosystem in delicate balance. There is solace to be found in the seasonal cycles of the natural world. These resilient rhythms continue in the face of a changing world, but eventually the planet’s life support systems will fail if we do not protect them. @andreashembphotography berättar: – Bilden är tagen i Zimanga Private Game Reserve, i Sydafrika, där jag satt själv i ett gömsle som var uppbyggt vid ett litet vattenhål. Här spenderade jag hela eftermiddagen och natten. Under de mörkaste timmarna fick jag besök av en hjord afrikanska vattenbufflar som kom in för att dricka. Det är en otrolig känsla när man från att ha suttit helt själv plötsligt har dessa stora djur bara några meter framför sig. Med hjälp av en teknik som heter in camera multiple exposure tog jag denna bild av flocken som drack under stjärnorna. ◽️ – På stativ tar jag först första delen av bilden som fångar bufflarna. Sen släcker jag den ledbelysning som finns på vardera sidan av gömslet och fortsätter exponeringen under 30s för att få med stjärnorna i bilden. Då är det helt svart vid vattenkanten och endast stjärnorna läggs till till bilden. Allt sparas i samma rawfil i kameran. ◽️ – Att sitta i afrikanska natten och vänta på vad som kan dyka upp är en otrolig upplevelse. Helt plötsligt skrider de majestätiska djuren fram ur mörkret. Det som gör det extra speciellt är att man kommer ner i höjd med vattenytan och verkligen kan möta djuren öga mot öga. Jag tog den här bilden 2016, och tekniken jag utnytjade var vid det tillfället ganska ny. Jag hade aldrig sett den användas till att fota djur med förut vilket gjorde att min bild vid tillfället var ganska unik. ◽️ – Den här bilden vann Swedish National Awards 2017 samt kom tvåa i Wildlife i Sony World Photography Awards, världens största fototävling med över 100 000 tävlande bilder. On todays #WorldRhinoDay, we celebrate one of Earths most fascinating—and most threatened—animals. Did you know rhinos have existed for more than 50 million years? The rare and critically endangered #blackrhino shown here is one of five rhino species—two native to Africa and three native to Asia. As many as 500,000 rhinos roamed the wild at the beginning of the 20th century, but today their numbers have plummeted to fewer than 28,500 due to habitat loss and poaching for their horns. On World Rhino Day, this 22nd of September, I recall this very emotional moment at a waterhole in Namibia. We spent a couple of hours watching these two mothers with their calf. White rhinos to the left, black rhinos to the right of the picture. The latter displayed a heartbreaking behaviour: the mother charged her daughter to chase her away when she tried to follow her back in the bush. Despite the perplexed « baby »’s moaning, her mother kept rejecting her, again and again. A brutal coming of age. The time had come for be on her own in this dangerous world. ***** Ce 22 septembre, journée mondiale du rhinocéros, me rappelle ce moment très intense vécu près d’un trou d’eau en Namibie. Nous avons passé près de deux heures à observer ces deux mères et leur petit. Des rhinos blancs à gauche, et noirs sur la droite. Cette dernière paire nous a offert un spectacle assez bouleversant. Après avoir bu, la mère à chargé sa fille à chaque fois qu’elle lui emboîtait le pas pour retourner dans la brousse. Malgré les gémissements de la « petite » totalement décontenancée, sa mère la rejetait systématiquement. I have been after an image of a Stag shaking water of him for years. I got a side on view last year but wanted to capture one head on. Basically, Deer sit down in the heavy rain, so you find one and just sit and wait in the pouring rain with them. Once it stops, they get up and shake the water of their backs. This is what he did but then turned his back on me and shook. At first, I thought it was two hours of my life that I wont be getting back but then the shot kind of grew on me. We are extremely delighted on the IUCN Save our Species award! This brings forth some next 2-3 years of sensational research and conservation as we work to recover the once best-thriving, and globally important population of the Ewaso African wild dog. This grant from IUCN Save our Species / European Union could not have come at a better time; immediately after a population crash of this species in the Ewaso ecosystem and just after the population starts to blossom once again.Through this project, we will work to address the two main threats to the wild dog population, infectious disease and persecution by people. To more exciting news, the currently only pack in Laikipia is once again denning and we cannot wait to meet our new puppies in a few weeks. It cannot be any better! in the next few years, we hope to build back the population. Introducing Tom Shepherd @tomshepherdartist Tom started off his art career creating custom artwork on guitars using graffiti pens. Making a move towards a brush and more traditional mediums opened up a whole new world, and he hasn’t looked back since. He loves to paint in acrylics and oils, and more recently has started exploring watercolour. Whilst Tom loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the light is doing something interesting, he is always drawn back to the place where his first two passions met; painting wildlife. In particular birds. The free flowing and immediate nature of watercolour seems to lend itself so well to capturing the fleeting moments of wildlife; along with their movement, character and colours. Toms work has become widely collected in the UK and more recently, internationally. He has been a highly commended finalist in the world renowned @dswfwildlife Wildlife Artist of the Year on several occasions. Fundraising for Wildlife: where possible Tom likes to combine his art work with conservation efforts close to his heart. As well as involvement with various group exhibitions geared towards raising funds for wildlife and conservation; he also contributes a portion of sales each year to UK based Organisations such as Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust; and to date has raised multiple thousands of pounds for these causes. Mundari cattle camp. When the Mundari are covered with ash they appear as apparitions or ghosts especially when their is dust and smoke in the air. They gather the dung in the morning, dry it by spreading it out and then use it as fuel for their fires. And so this cyclical use of ash continues. The men also shower using the urine of their cattle which acts as an antiseptic and colours their hair orange! These people have a very sustainable existence and their connection with nature should be a message to us all. These ancient practices ensure harmony with the environment and have a small ecological footprint which is local and ensures cultural longevity. . . GATHER / As we look toward the future of our country and the deep healing and reparations that are needed, it is imperative that we also examine to our past with a critical eye - to better understand the systemic traumas and injustices that continue to play out to this day. Feeling deeply thankful for all of the folk who have been doing the work day in and day out; some for months now - others for generations; some in 140 characters - others in the form of novels and dance; some with feet marching in the streets, saws and shovels cutting fire lines - others with their hands in the ground, whispering old prayers, tending to the new tender shoots of hope and growth. Today Im excited to share that Gather, a documentary I have been eagerly anticipating the public release of is available for streaming on all the major platforms. To understand where we are as a country today and to move forward towards a more just and equitable future, we must confront the genocide, slavery, racism, and ongoing colonial oppression which are foundational elements of our country and food system, both past and present. Gather provides a deep dive into the forces at play - forces that have long worked to eradicate the communities and cultures sustained by native food systems. Just as importantly however, this film is a brilliantly hopeful story of the youth and elders working to plant the seeds and tend the lines of hope and healing through the restorative powers of community, stewardship and the spiritual and physical revival of ancesteral foodways. A late one and one that inspires me a lot of peace - what better than bathing ellies at dusk ? It’s been a hell of a month, and i’m excited for a break from the lemons. Truly. I’ve not really been knowing what to post recently. My feed is always usually colourful and I feel it’s all blending in a little too much. My recent work in France and Sicily is very much relevant to the approach i have to conservation, always trying to reconcile man and nature, though perhaps it is not so obvious - it’ll be the object of my next article. Beauty and the appreciation of it is a quintessential human trait, one that seems to appease, reconcile and unite. It comes in all forms, the one we create - architecture, art, literature, etc - and the one we notice in our environment. Natural beauty only exists through human eyes, but how powerful is it to almost unanimously take for beautiful what is already laid out for us? Aesthetics are not really sufficient grounds to justify conservation (though that’s debatable) but are very much a step forward for spontaneous individual and therefore collective action. What do you - we - feel, in the face of beauty? I would have posted a shot that stayed with me from the ancient Greek temples of Selinunte in southwestern Sicily but my hard drive is currently somewhere lost on a plane. So the next newsletter will hopefully take you to timeless places with its words only; intertwining ancient Greece and nature preservation. And maybe images will pop up at some point.
