100% accurate. So much stigma attached to this disorder that there are literally no psychiatrists that specialise in this in Northern Ireland. Not saying they don’t work with those with bpd but they are extremely reluctant to give a diagnosis. There is a personality disorder service which focuses mostly on group therapy. This is regardless of how those with a comorbid disorder such as social anxiety could even cope in a group setting. I know I can’t cope in a group setting. I have bpd and I feel like I’m drowning. I keep being told “we treat symptoms” in the beginning I was told “we don’t tend to give out diagnoses we like to treat symptoms”. It just adds to stigma around mental health. There are people who spend their entire lives researching, studying, debating, and reviewing all available literature in an attempt to better understand the effects all the issues confronting us today. Climate change, racism, pandemics, capitalism, authoritarianism, and mass media are all subjects you can study at school. They all require years and years of work in order to start to wrap your head around them. It would feel so much better if you could just “wake up” and “do your research” and then you would know. You would understand what is happening right now. You would know what is going to happen next. You would feel so much more secure. But the information you are looking for is simply not available that way. You can’t just awaken your consciousness and suddenly have deep insight into the nature of all the world’s problems. Shit. You can’t even have deep insight into your own neurosis in less than a year or so of therapy. Why would you expect to get a handle on our global neurosis? You do not have the time, energy, or resources to do that. And that is frustrating. And scary. We do not know what will happen next. There isn’t a single person or organization standing behind the screen pulling levers. You are not on a yellow brick road, Dorothy. You are living in an incredibly complex, chaotic, and ever-changing world. There are no easy answers. Academics, scientists, researchers, and investigators can help you clarify some things, but you would need to listen to them in order to do that. That doesn’t mean you are an idiot or a sheep. It means you are smart enough to realize you should listen to people who have spent a lifetime studying. You should compare notes with others. You should read. You should be self-critical and attempt to understand your own shortcomings and blind spots.
