TIRI NWII (HAIR) Black hair has always been a form of storytelling, self expression, and connecting with one another. Allen Iverson’s braids, Dennis Rodman’s dyed hair, Stephon Marbury’s part, and Dominique Wilkins’ high top have all been hair styles that caught my attention growing up. When my older brothers learned how to cut hair, they’d give me the Jalen Rose cut. So whenever I went to anyone else to cut my hair I’d ask for player type cuts instead of the actual name of the cut. They’d look at me confused but would point me to a haircut chart or try to look up what I was talking about. So this photo set is my rendition of a haircut chart. High bar: On the hips, which is seen most commonly. Low bar: Below the hips, which is also just as effective. Most people use a bar sponge, which is seen in the first video. Gaby is using a BC Strength sponge. You can also use a yoga mat, which is seen in the second video. Or you can use a combination of both a bar sponge and a yoga mat depending on your comfortability. Either way, ideal bar placement is just above the pubic bone in the lower abdomen region. The sponge should always be centered on the bar while the barbell is centered on your hips. •A New Chapter• When I think about this first half of the year it seems impossible to get a break. First transportation strikes that limited mobility throughout the city here, then a global pandemic, now an outcry for justice. Meanwhile, in the midst of all these things I’ve been navigating entering a new chapter of motherhood. Under normal circumstances this is supposed to be a joyful and exciting moment. I’ve been overwhelmed with anxiety, worried about my health and the health of the baby. Haven’t been able to access prenatal care as I normally would due to Covid. With everything that is currently going on in the US my heart has been so heavy thinking about the family of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and all the families who have lost their sons or daughters too soon. As much as I want to curl up and wish this year is over, I’m hopeful that the world is getting ready to turn the page to a new chapter and I am making a point to find joy and celebrate this new journey. Now living in New York City there is a totally elevated amount of appreciation for that experience as a child. Growing up I was elated by the summer season which was always catalyzed by the mountain strawberry patch growing in the backyard. Those succulent berries kept me outdoors. In the garden I would spend the days pretending I had a restaurant -- I didn’t have many friends but I pretended I had some to feed. With the incredible level of racism that I experienced being Black, I felt safety in my garden where I could interact and be creative with my environment. When there was so much I was not allowed to access, unwelcomed, and intentionally excluded I am thankful for the bounty I could retreat to. I bounced between the sandbox, wooden picnic table, and the infinite beds of plants my parents cultivated -- I’m very thankful to have had that freedom and protection to explore my spirit in that space. Last month, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic @RobinGivhan reached out to discuss @TheKellyInitiative as part of an analysis of Black fashion advocacy efforts. I’d patiently waited for this moment because speaking with Robin about anti-Blackness in fashion would be dissimilar from any of the previous conversations I’d had on the subject. I candidly shared with her, “with you things are different, you can’t play dumb...you literally are smart for a living”. And smart she was, meticulously taking me to admirable task on the decisions I’ve made as a vocal advocate and organizer, as well as my broader perspectives on the community of powerbrokers in fashion preventing Black talent from thriving...or even working. Hers wasn’t antagonistic needling, but rather the due-diligence I would expect of a seasoned journalist, lauded as much for analytical discernment as her takes on style. I approached the two lengthy interviews with the transparency via which I conduct all affairs of this nature: I am an open book...a little too open for those who’d prefer I play along more cooperatively with the industry’s hierarchical games of tokenism. When all was said and done, I felt an incredible weight lift off my shoulders; anyone that has made the decision to no longer keep the dirty little secrets of others knows this specific brand of liberation. The ever-thoughtful writer, Robin didn’t tell my entire story—God knows there aren’t enough pages in a copy of The Washington Post to accomplish THAT herculean feat—but she did distill and parse (with crystalline precision) much of the noise around fashion and race clogging the airwaves these days. I believe that it’s by no error that other fresh voices were featured prominently while many of the over-exposed usual suspects were de-centered for a change. Yes—within this era of architecting precedent for authentic equity—it’s time that we quit gambling for lottery-slim chances at breadcrumbs of opportunity (the house ALWAYS wins). If old-guard likability is sacrificed in this work of change-making, so be it. A significant part of The Morphogenesis Bag Collection was 3D-printed using flexible materials. I find 3D printing of polymers one of the most promising directions opening extensive use of additive manufacturing for fashion products. Even though its still emerging, the new flexible materials are going to be degradable and infinitely recyclable. Its not a bad addition to ethical and cruelty-free opportunities that we have already brought to the fashion industry with additive manufacturing. A little upgrade goes a long way! 🤩🤩 #SherwinWilliams ProIndustrial Water-based Epoxy was used on the CMU (concrete masonry unit) on these swimming pool walls. A two-part epoxy was chosen for its resistance to common swimming pool chemicals and its early resistance to moisture which is crucial in a humid environment SW ProIndustrial Multi-surface Acrylic was used on the ceiling. MSA was used for its ability to bond to marginally prepared surfaces and offers excellent one-coat hide with dryfall properties.
