- I ran into a coworker whilst out skiing whos friends were in town for a few days on their road trip. Her friends quickly became my friends and I am so happy to have met these ladies. These girls give me so much strength to push myself and be better at everything I do.
Throwback to one of my favorite adventures in recent memory. For years I had sledded by this striking peak and always thought some day I needed to stand on top and ski it. I showed @bonmyway a few photos and we set out on the late spring mission. After a few miles of dirt and rock sledding we crossed a river and reached the snow. We then continued the approach with a long ride of committed sidehills and steep climbs. We reached the saddle just below the peak in the late afternoon and set up camp where we enjoyed a sunset dinner. After a chilly but beautifully clear night we woke up at sunrise with a harder overnight freeze than expected. We had a casual breakfast while we waited for the snow to soften up. Once ready we hiked the last steep icy pitch up the backside of the peak arriving at the summit in the mid morning. After a scary minute trying to decide where the cornice was supported we inched our way to the edge to view the slope that had brought us all this way. Our timing was good and the snow had softened up but appeared stable. With the first turn on a hanging snowfield Brandon dropped in ice axe in hand. It was quickly apparent the conditions were perfect and we opened up 3000 feet of sustained steep turns all the way to near the valley floor. Spirits were high on the ride out and when I snapped my ski on a firm sidehill it was a small price to pay for the journey we had just completed. If it’s an active rest day, I usually start my morning off with some @believesupplements believesupplements Superfoods+Greens to aid my digestive system throughout the day and get some veggies in 🥦🥬🥗 Thennnnn I sneak in some Energy+Burner (Sour gummy bear is wear it’s at🍭) to kickstart my metabolism and get a lil burst of energy with 150mg of caffeine! Mahatma Ghandi I have felt all sorts of emotions in the recent few days, may that be sadness, sorrow, anger, and frustration. Being a privileged white male I obviously cannot begin to fathom the oppression, hatred, and racism against Black Lives, POC, and LGBTQ that has gone on for generations for far too long. I have had my own personal “speed bumps” with the law and to think that if I didn’t happen to be a white male that chances are the outcomes would have been much different. This realization makes me want to cry, and is simply not fair. Why should I get treated differently? The needle is getting moved before our eyes, for the better. When I look back at this time I know I want to be standing on the right side of history right behind our modern day MLK’s, Nelson Mandelas, Ghandis, and Rosa Parks. I will not be silent. The 27th Annual Utah Avalanche Center Backcountry Benefit is tonight from 6–10pm. This virtual event is the major fundraiser for @utavy. Alta is the birthplace of avalanche research and mitigation in the United States. Early snow studies from Monty Atwater, Ed LaChapelle, and the US Forest Service Snow Ranger program evolved into the Utah Avalanche Center we know today. Officially formed in the winter of 1980-81, the UAC creates daily avalanche forecasts for the Wasatch Mountains and the rest of Utah. Each year @utavy leads invaluable avalanche education courses and creates educational videos for a wide range of skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and other winter sports enthusiasts. We are anticipating a busy winter with potential record numbers of skiers in the backcountry. You have a few hours left to wrap up the workday and support the UAC (virtual) fundraising event tonight. Born in Montreal, my love of skiing began at 4 years old. My father, Doug Allen, became a Hall of Fame member of the CSIA and Sport Manitoba; and an Order of Canada recipient for his contributions to skiing. Back in Winnipeg, we skied our local riverbanks with the Winnipeg Ski Club (WSC). We ventured to bigger hills in Manitoba on weekends and vacationed at Sunshine Village where ski school was the core of the experience. I started teaching at the club. My father and others designed a program to train instructors. This, with similar efforts in Canada, was adopted into what we now call Level 1. I took my Level 2 at Silverstar where I taught as an alpine and x-country instructor. Instructor Dan Blankstein and I took jobs at the Fairmont Hot Springs B.C. I stayed for 4 seasons, the last 3 I ran the ski school/shop for the area, and completed my Level 3. Back in the Peg, I ran a ski school/rental shop for the WSC and became part owner of a shop called Sun, Ski & Sail. After closing the business, I oversaw the operation of the ski school at Mt. Agassiz for the rest of the winter. That fall, I bailed out a friend to work in a tech shop. This led to a 34-year career with Sport Chek where I became a ski specialist. I am almost fully retired now but remain involved as an Elite Bootfitter which allows me to help athletes find the best equipment for their performance. The same year, Brian Hatherly asked if I would coach kids ski racing, and 34 years later, I am still with the Summit Ski Club. I am almost finished the PL Coach Trained and am a Mentor-Evaluator with ACA-CSC. I have led Special Olympic athletes to national/international games and managed/coached Masters at the local/national level. Theres no life like it. A 48-year CSIA member, I am still a L1 CC and CSIA Central board member. Its the volunteer spirit and the joy of lifelong learning that was instilled in me by my father that made me what I am. It started with a love of learning and that growth doesnt have to stop. The friends and mentors I have met and still learn from in both the business and ski world inspired me to follow my dreams. As a practicing RN of over 4 years, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Storgaard epitomizes the strength within all nurses. In 2018, Lizzie became suddenly, and critically, ill. Lizzie turned to her coworkers at St. Joseph Hospital for help. The Nurses, Doctors, Therapists and Care Team with whom she works came together to diagnose her with the ultra-rare disorder of aHUS (Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome).
