As the busy season at Chocorua Lake draws to a close, we gather to protect the shoreline from erosion and the wear and tear of human use. Volunteering with a view! Please join us on Friday, September 4, 9-11:30AM, for a Stewardship Day helping to care for the lakeshore at the Island at Chocorua Lake, right off of Route 16. Many of the public access areas along the lakeshore are used intensively throughout the summer season. We spread wood-chip mulch several times a year to protect the roots of the trees and shrubs that grow near the lake and are essential to limiting erosion at the lake edge. Please bring a shovel or other tools for spreading mulch, if you are able, as well as work gloves and a mask. We’ll work far enough apart to allow for social distancing, but close enough to have a conversation when needed. Be prepared for bugs and ticks just in case. Feel free to come for all or some of the morning. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and health considerations, there can no longer be consideration of informal #camping around Jindabyne. Effective Monday 17 August 2020, camping within #Jindabyne, #TyroleanVillage, #EastJindabyne and #Kalkite will be regulated. There will be no camping in carparks, streets, reserves and the lake foreshore and new signage will reflect this. There will also be no stopping from 8pm – 6am at the Claypits Carpark. Whilst the Claypits Carpark is not a formal campground, it is currently operating as one. Under the Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 4) 2020, a COVID-safe plan is required for a camping ground. There is no ability to provide a COVID-safe plan for the Claypits as a camping ground. It is not possible for the Claypits to satisfy the requirements of a COVID-safe plan under the Public Health Order and therefore Council is obligated to introduce these regulations. We have assessed alternatives and liaised with other NSW Councils on this. This has included paid permit systems but the current solution is to close off this area to any overnight parking. The current volume of use has affected the public perception of the amenities and foreshore in particular, which is having a negative impact on a town whose tourism business levels have already been affected by bushfire, ongoing drought, snow season uncertainty and COVID-19. The costs associated with cleaning and waste have dramatically increased with the influx of informal campers. Council thanks those campers who had been trying to keep the site clean and had been taking their rubbish to the landfill to lessen the impact. No informal camping will be available for the remainder of this year (2020) and Council will further consider regulations after that. Police and Rangers will patrol these areas and issue infringement notices. Last weekend, our Volunteer Trail Crew was hard at work in the Crazy Mountains. Our crew worked in Big Timber Canyon each day to construct a turnpike below Twin Lakes. This structure firmed up a boggy section of the trail that is known to gobble up some loose boots and horseshoes early in the season. Building a turnpike is satisfying work. Yesterday we said goodbye to our friend Growley. This cat slept in my arms every night, sat at my desk while I worked and protected and loved our son like a brother. He had a magical life here in Topanga, outsmarted coyotes on the regular and was feared by all small creatures who dared to invade our territory. As he was passing he psychically communicated to me that he might want to be reincarnated as a dolphin or a bear, or maybe even a baby. Trail of the week: sunshine A blue trail below dry canyon trail head. It starts of with a open smooth trail where you can really have some speed, It drops into a tight turn in some trees and into a really technical section, this short tree area has a big stump, rocks,and a lot of roots. Then it drops into a really fun switch back with a few rocks but mostly smooth, Then you enter a tree section, you can pick up a lot of speed here.
