Facebook just reminded me that on this day 8 years ago I’d just returned from backpacking Europe for 3 months with two of my best mates where I had the epiphany that I needed to pursue Motorsport for a living. I sold my house, sold or packed my things and started a 3,440km (2,137 mile) drive to Melbourne to take the first steps. Today I started a drive that’s only 20km shorter to head from Austin to Seattle for round two of the Formula Drift championship. The next three weekends (Sept 6th, 13th, 20th) HikeRevolution will be hiking the #triplecrowntraverse completing one loop for each week. If the entire challenge on Oct 3rd is too much to bite off, then this is a way to complete the challenge in sections and go with us leading the way. It’s also a good way to become more familiar with the routes if you plan to go for the entire challenge at some point. We will begin at midnight Sunday morning for each hike and estimate spending 8-10 hours on the mountain and finishing Sunday afternoon before it’s too hot. Sept 6th: #sobloop Sugarloaf, Ontario, Bighorn Loop - we will go up to Icehouse Saddle first then follow the Cucamonga Peak Trail to the Bighorn Saddle, summit Bighorn, Ontario, Sugarloaf and then Falling Rock Canyon. Sept 13th: #cucamongamiddleforkloop We will summit Cucamonga, Etiwanda, #altalomapeak and then follow the ridge down to #stonehousecampground Then we will follow the Middlefork Trail back to Icehouse Saddle. Sept 20th: #telegraphmiddleforkloop We will go up to Icehouse Saddle and then head down to 3rd Stream Crossing. From there we will go off trail up a creek and then skirt the edge of the slope up to the ridgeline to Telegraph. We’ve been gone for almost three weeks and made our way into wine country in Mexico yesterday. So far it’s my kind of place🍷. Van life has been a lot of fun. We work in new places every day and meet new people. It’s been much easier than some of the long camping trips we’ve done in the past where we had to find a camp spot every night. Setting up your tent in rain or the dark can be a pain after a while lol. 😂Of course, we’ve had maintenance hiccups here and there but it’s been a great experience thus far. 4,330 miles driven 145 miles hiked/ran 95 hours driving 21 days on the road 9 states visited 8 national parks 2 bear encounters . A few thoughts: It felt good to clear my head, get outside and visit some places I’ve never been. Hiking and running alone in bear country terrified me and probably wasn’t the best idea in retrospect but I wouldn’t have changed much else. I actually miss sleeping in the back of my van. Projected high this weekend is 111ºF in Los Angeles. Curiosity, the privilege of free time, and a Photoshop subscription led me to this post. First map shows public cooling centers, which are open throughout LA County to try and help those w/o AC, including people who live unhoused. Second map shows the cooling centers overlaid onto the unhoused population per the 2019 Point in Time Count, approx. 59,000 people living unhoused in LA County. Januarys 2020 Count estimated a 12.7% rise, approx. 66,436. Couldnt find a new map, though, so Im using 2019 numbers. Imagine 12.7% more people. (Also, these counts are notoriously low - they are visual counts performed by volunteers. I volunteered this past year and can tell you - they certainly dont FEEL scientific. But they are, unfortunately, the best that we have.) Zooming into two examples: Plummer Park has a capacity of 30 people, in an area with approx 30 - 500 unhoused people per square mile. Lafayette Multipurpose, cap 45, in an area w approx 100 - 2,908 unhoused people /sqm. They are the only centers around. They open at noon. (btw, I had to search independently for capacity and for center phone numbers - neither provided on the master map by the county) (btw btw, the above two centers are run by cities - West Hollywood and Los Angeles - not LA County. There are no LA County facilities in this area) In January, the county estimated 66k people living unhoused outside. There are likely more people living housed inside with bad or no AC. Did they not expect it to be hot this summer? How many people should we expect to suffer heat stroke this weekend? If youre tired of waiting for action from county or city government, seek out a local volunteer organization. They could use your support, either in-person or via donation. Greetings & a good day to my dearest patrons. I have formally written to the Governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, requesting that bicycle shops and the services they provide be considered as an ‘essential business’ during the recent shelter-in-place order. Under the order, it appears that bicycles are not considered a legitimate mode of transportation. As some may agree, their only mode of transportation is the bicycle and it would be a disservice to not have that recognized. That being said, Sirius Cycles is getting through the remaining work orders that are currently in the shop. The shop will temporarily be ‘Closed’, only to distribute the remaining bicycles currently on the premises and parts as needed. I would urge folks to be in touch with their respected bicycle shop and ask that they make an appeal as well. In the meantime, get that immune system straight and in good health.
