while psychiatric hospitals can be helpful to some people, they can also be immensely harmful and traumatic to others. Everyone has a different experience and story to tell when I was 18 years old, I was deeply suicidal from my OCD and was taken to the ER. In order to avoid going IP, I pleaded that I was fine and nothing was wrong. It was just a lack of sleep that impaired my judgment. Luckily I convinced the doctors well enough and didn’t have to go in inpatient. I went inpatient when I was 15 years old and that was just not a fun experience. I was held there for days against my own will and my parents were told that if I left it would be ‘going against medical advice’ . From there- I was pumped with heavy doses of antipsychotics- against my consent. Told ‘oh this will help you’ . I was put on such heavy medication at the sole age of 15. And then oh my god the discharge process was something else. My parents wanted to get me out of there as it was unsafe and I just sat there every day staring at the walls. There was no therapeutic value. There was nothing of substance- and the therapies were subpar. I didn’t even talk to the psychiatrist- instead I was pumped with medication. I have heard such terrible stories from others. Stories that included violence, stories that included lawsuits, stories that included being admitted indefinitely with no discharge date. There’s so many horrific stories about psychiatric hospitals out there. Also- I’m not trying to discourage anyone from going- this is just my own personal view point and how I personally feel. Honestly when you go to a place to seek help at your lowest, you shouldn’t be leaving feeling traumatized or more suicidal. This just isn’t treatment. Psychiatric facilities can also be so damn abusive. Something else that personally bothers me is forced hospitalization. What ever happened to personal autonomy? Forced hospitalizations can cause even more trauma to someone. Mental health hospitals need a drastic change and overhaul to the way that it is ran. There needs to be other methods of treatment besides mental health hospitals. Like mental health urgent care facilities, peer respite centers, etc - @mentalhealthfacts on Instagram
