Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency and it needs to be recognized early. A similar situation may occur when an IO cannula is deployed in the wrong position or dislodged during the treatment. That is why you would want to make sure your IO device is in place. There are several ways to verify IO placement: 1. Check for aspiration of bone marrow 2. Flush and watch for swelling 3. Are the medications injected via the IO taking effect on the patient? 4. If available, bedside doppler may be effective in correct position confirmation. Early signs of compartment syndrome - Severe pain, swelling and redness of the affected limb Compartment syndrome is a rare complication associated with IO access. It may occur when the cannula is dislodged from the bone or over penetrated it. Therefore, correct location must be verified by aspiration of bone marrow, saline flush and observation of extravasation signs.
