Saturday afternoon, this small drainage just outside of Salida flash flooded. We received several calls concerned about why the water was so black. Heavy rains mixed with char and ash in the Decker Fire burn scar and little remaining vegetation to stabilize the soil caused this dark muddy flow. Pictures from hikes to 3 lovely waterfalls including Skinny Dip Falls, Laurel Creek Falls and Spruce Flats Falls, and 1 overloook at Craggy Gardens off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Love hiking in the mountains ⛰ and need to explore more! All 4 of these hikes were relatively short (maximum length of 2.6 miles round trip) but were all very steep (hardest was Spruce Flats because it is not paved like Laurel Creek Falls and very narrow and rocky at times). Overall very doable by novice hikers as long as you go slow and steady. Big news today for the Chehalis River from Gov. Inslee! He sent a letter to the Chehalis Basin Board, Dept. of Ecology and Washington Dept and Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife to put a pause on the EIS for the proposed Chehalis dam and called for the board to pursue alternatives to a dam that benefit both salmon and flood reduction. Recent work evaluating a proposed large-scale flood retention project in the upper Chehalis River has brought additional and significant questions and concerns about impacts and alternatives. I have requested that the Chehalis Basin Board provide recommendations on the process for addressing some of these concerns, particularly the development of a basin-wide, non-dam alternative to flood damage reduction and evaluating the potential to avoid, minimize, and mitigate the impacts of the flood retention and other flood risk reduction projects. Furthermore, I am directing that Ecology pause the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process through the end of the year and to use funding available within the Office of Chehalis Basin budget to assist the Board in the development of a non-dam alternative. While we have coyotes, they have only been documented a couple times here in the monument, so these photos are a big deal to us. The coyote is a bit difficult to see because of their camouflage -- the ability to blend in with their surroundings. This makes coyotes able to sneak up and ambush their prey. ASP Design and Construction is hard at work in the Haines area with updates on the Chilkoot Lake Road. The project will be going into winter shutdown at the end of this month. Overnight, the #WalbridgeFire grew from 20,000 acres to 21,125 acres and continued its push backing down into the Armstrong Woods grove, Sweetwater Springs and the Mount Jackson area. At the eastern flank of the fire, the Wallace Creek drainage continues to give fire crews difficulty, with the upper Mill Creek, Sweetwater Springs and McCray Ridge areas getting hit hard. The southern tip of the fire continues to move south toward the communities of #RioNido and #Guerneville, prompting the expansion of the evacuation warning. En Placilla de Peñuelas podemos encontrar contrastes de vegetación. El pino y eucalipto son muy abundantes en nuestra comunidad, estos suelos fueron antiguamente usados para la plantación de monocultivos( pino, eucaliptos) para el negocio de la madera y celulosa, lamentablemente estás especies no son muy beneficiosas para nuestro entorno ya que absorben más agua de lo normal para su crecimiento y secan fácilmente los suelos, afectando a otras especies, también son focos constante de incendios, ya es sabido que los incendios son normalmente provocados para la posterior construcción de inmobiliarias, negocio redondo para ellos. Muchas personas creen que en estos sectores no hay valor para conservar ya que solo se ve pino y eucaliptos pero están completamente equivocados. I see a lot of guys here on social media, the #mustbenice guys, who want to hunt the best areas but most of them don’t want to grind it out at the bottom to earn their way up. They cry about money, opportunities, they have a regular job, kids, etc...yeah, yeah yeah. Me too. — 1989, my first year of bowhunting, I killed this bull, a spike, after 18 straight days of elk hunting. I quit college because I was obsessed with bowhunting success. Was that smart? No. Would you do that? Probably not. People said I got lucky. My second year I killed a rag horn 5-point and people said they heard I shot it with a crossbow or a rifle. My first taste of hater envy. I didn’t like it but couldn’t do anything about it. My third year I killed a nice 5x5 and the big mule deer. This really stirred up hate. My photo of the bull at @thebowrack got messed with as someone poked my eyes out with a tack. Didn’t care...weak people hate, I just kept hammering. — Got so obsessed with elk hunting I used all my vacation and my job at the time said I couldn’t miss another day of work and I said well looks like we have a decision to make. They let me go hunting and I made up my time when I got back. Would you risk your job for bowhunting. Probably not. — I had no money, had a family and we only had one car until my wife’s sister gave us a car so the only state I could afford to hunt was Oregon for elk and I did that from 1989 to 2003 killing a bull virtually every year on public land. In 2004 I went on my first out-of-state elk hunt, Wyoming, and killed a 6x7 on public land. Did that again a couple years later. Since then my obsession that started on day one with bow in hand has led me to the best elk hunting in the world as that’s what I’ve geared my life towards for over 30 years. — So, before you talk shit, remember there’s been sacrifice and struggle for decades. I’ve learned that the people who talk the most won’t sacrifice what I have and those that will, don’t talk shit. Because they get it. Keep hammering! The Indian Falls Interpretive trail got some major improvements this week. Here is the crew making progress on the staircases for the trail. Its a short but steep hike to see Indian Falls. When trails need to be above grade, staircases are installed to help decrease erosion. By using native rock to build the staircase the crew created a durable surface for users while decreasing soil runoff into Indian Creek. In honor of #EarthDay this year, we have some promising news to share from a project in our timberlands in southwest Oregon. For the first time in 70 years, threatened and vulnerable migratory fish now have access to two additional miles of critical cold-water habitat on a restored section of Baker Creek, a tributary of the Coquille River. The collaborative effort between Weyerhaeuser and multiple private, nonprofit and government organizations removed a longstanding human-made barrier to fish passage and helped return the creek to its natural state. On Bigfoot Big Eyes ••• Okay, so let me start by saying Bigfoot is BS, here’s why though. You should know by now that humans see themselves a little differently than other animals. Some people even go so far as to say we are not animals, but joke’s on them because bacteria and DNA will get them every time. You’re an ape—not a robot. The reason I say this, though, is that while we may look different than most animals, we have many more similarities than differences between us, and that is unsettling to some. We fear what we are not. Did you ever notice that the sightings of creatures like Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, and the Skunk/Swamp Ape are always hairy and large? They are a reflection of a more animal-like version of us, and the idea of something like that in the wild is both alluring and haunting. The same can be said for the creatures more advanced than us. Consider the classic image of an alien - little green or gray creatures. They always have huge eyes, lack body hair, and they are often smaller, taller, or more slender than us. They are almost a reflection of ourselves; similar enough to be human, but different enough to be alien. I’d also wager that the way we look at aliens is the same way chimps look at us – hairless, huge eyed, and really into medical experiments. I think ETs exist, but they’re probably cephalopod, bug, or platypus-like, not humanoid. To further my argument, name me a primate that lives its entire life in solitude? A signature trait of primates is our hypersociality. We need to be social, great apes even more so, and I presume Bigfoot is a great ape/hominid. Sure, male orangutans like to live alone for a while, but they definitely return to an area full of females at some point. Where they at? Also, given the trigger-happiness of the US, a Bigfoot would have been shot, skinned, and turned in for prize money a long time ago. Where they at? Sedate one and bring it to me, then I’ll believe. ••• Summary: Humans view the universe with a human bias. I snuck in on this bull on the forth morning of my bow hunt last September. He raked a tree for about five minutes before approaching within 20 yards and sparring with another bull right in front of me. The bulls pushed and shoved and spun in circles for a few minutes while, in utter disbelief, I captured the action on video...or so I thought. Turns out, Id double tapped the record button and missed it all.
