Three Big Things: Upon returning to the gym, even if its outdoor, I have run into a few challenges in the past week as a Coach and a Leader of Coaches. This morning I woke up and realized that no matter what difficulties I face in this business and industry I have got to remember to do the following: -Be Grateful: I have to remember I have my health (minus a DVT in the left calf), I have a job, and I have support from a wife, family, and friends. There are so many things to bitch and complain about in 2020, but at the end of the day I have got to remember to be grateful for the things I have in life. Good vibes only-- too much hate in this world to be ungrateful for what we have. -Check Your Ego: This comes down to the way I carry myself at work as well as during my own time, especially during workouts. Jumping back into a job and the gym after 6 months is challenging and can break you mentally and physically. Remember to slow down and think things out before doing-- even if that means regressing your movements. -Find Balance: Last week 65 hours of work and barely 49 hours of sleep was not balance. In fact, it was more detrimental to my day to day living than anything. As much as we want to do everything we can in 24 hours, we need to remind ourselves that we are human and to live a healthy life you need to balance things out. Even if that means sacrificing certain activities in your day and week to do so. Also, its ok to turn things off when you go home-- like work and your cell phone. I know my wife would appreciate it more if I can find balance with work and life in these coming days and weeks-- I owe that to her with the amount of times I have driven her crazy during our countys lockdown. Final note: health and fitness is more than repping out on the squat rack or hitting your macros daily. Just welcomed my youngest client to date- my 9 year old son. ❤️ He wanted to come with me to work today and after seeing what he can do, he said he’d like to come back twice, no, just once, ok fine, twice a week from now on. 🤣 Real talk time. I’ve struggled to get my kids moving during this global pandemic. All their usual forms of exercise are unavailable- walking to and from school, sports, after school activities- and I promise, my kids are not more motivated to workout with me at the gym just because I’m a coach by profession. It’s a million degrees outside and public pools and playgrounds are closed. All my kids want to do is sit, sit and sit some more. Teaching kids about making healthy choices without projecting our own fears and shame onto them is a struggle I am NOT above. Especially when good outcomes seem scarce. Even so, I’d you love someone and want what’s best for them, whether it be your child who needs more exercise, a spouse who needs to quit smoking, or a family member who needs to lose weight, I promise you, they already know what they need to do better. They don’t need to hear how disappointed you are, to be shunned or excluded from treats or whatever, or to be reminded that their struggle makes your life harder. If you want to support someone you love in living a healthier lifestyle, tell them you love them. Show them they are worth more to you than their biggest weakness. Show them you value their health. And offer your support in any way you can. Bottom line: you can’t make anyone want to start or quit anything, but people who know they have the full support and encouragement from their loved ones are more likely to succeed. People who feel like they disappoint their loved ones have one less reason to do better. Love always wins. Are tight lats limiting your ability to reach and lift overhead? . . The latissimus dorsi muscle (AKA lats) is a large, flat muscle on the back that stretches to the sides behind the arm. . . This muscle mostly extends, adducts, and internally rotates the shoulder joint. It also may assist in lumbar spine extension and side bending. . . When this muscle becomes tight it is often difficult to reach and lift overhead which may cause difficulty with the snatch, jerk, and kipping motions for CrossFitters. . . Here are 3 great stretches that you can do to stretch your lats. . . 1️⃣ Childs pose. From a quadruped position on a fours sit your butt back onto your heels and reach as far out with your arms as possible. You should feel a stretch on the side of your trunk or rib cage. . . 2️⃣ Side Child Pose. Same as childs pose but now reach towards one side. You should feel a stretch on the opposite side. . . 3️⃣ Lat Stretch with a band. This is one of my favorites. Thread your wrist through a @rogue band that is attached overhead on a pull up bar. Be sure to start with tension on the band. Next sit your butt back and bring your arm overhead. TRAP BAR JUMP SQUAT This exercise is a great way to progress athletes towards more technical power lifts such as the hang clean. However, it does not necessarily have to be progressed to another exercise. It offers plenty of benefit to the athlete on its own: -Sequence triple ext (coordination) -Vertical force production (power) -Force absorption (deceleration) Additional benefits: The exercise does not require much teaching from the coach nor mastery of technical skills by the athlete. This is especially beneficial when working with younger athletes since the limited time they have to train is like gold and should be used efficiently. To follow the wisdom of William of Ockham It is futile to do with more what can be done with less. Before getting into loaded jump squats I like to teach athletes to properly sequence the upper and lower body through overhead jump squats. This ensures that the athlete learns how to safely and properly load their hips and legs by creating a stable upper body. You will know if the athlete is maintaining a stable upper body if they are able to create and maintain parallel lines between the spine and the shin when they land. This landing positon allows the lower body to safely absorb force as well as puts the body in position for optimal force production. #athleticdevelopment #power - @coachchapel on Instagram

The competition ran smooth thanks to the help of our awesome volunteers and judges. everyone chipped in, nobody complained! Thank you to everyone who lent a helping hand in planning, setting up, and executing the competition. The anxiety and stress leading up to the event sometimes makes me question why we do it, but once the event is over it is so rewarding. Athletes pushing themselves, the crowd cheering on their friends and family, and the camaraderie of the competitors, I know that it is all worth it. If there is one takeaway from hosting a competition, it is that it makes our community stronger. We are not just a gym. For my wife Katlyn, daughter Rowen, and my son Rigley, it is our home away from home, and I know many of you feel the same way. Thank you again to everyone who made Fitness 4 Faith 2020 outstanding. SQUAD STORIES 👑Featuring - Katelyn👑 I have never been the kind of person to play sports, exercise or be active nor feel comfortable enough to push myself out of my comfort zone to do so. Growing up I never felt that I needed to be active as I was skinny and that was all that mattered to me. In 2013 I thought I would be crazy and jump off a waterfall - being so skinny I had nothing to protect my fall and I crushed a vertebrae in my back, lucky enough for me it wasnt along my spinal cord so no major damage was done, apart from having to wear a brace for a few months - meaning I lost all muscles in my stomach and back. I was told I needed to exercise to strengthen everything again, but I didnt. Fast forward a couple of years, I move out of home, moved 16 hours away and had to be an adult in a place I had no family or friends to help, I began to eat bad food just because I could, I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted and that meant eating take away and not exercising. In just over 1 year I put on nearly 15kgs, lost all self esteem and struggled mentally. Just as everything with Covid started I moved home with my partner and seen a post from EFIT on Facebook, I thought I would give it a go, having no expectations and deep down knowing I wouldnt really go that often! To my surprise after a few classes at the EFIT HQ I was hooked, Erin and all the members were so welcoming and encouraging! We started the 8 week challenge at the start of August and I am now going to 7+ classes a week and loving every second, actually missing it when I cant get to HQ but now also feel confident enough to go for a run or a bike ride by myself. I have learnt you dont need to be coordinated or any good at exercise, you just have to show up, have some fun and in the long run you get better and end up WANTING to go to the gym and exercise ( its still hard for me to believe 🤣 ) When I first Joined EFIT I wouldn’t even go to a class that my friend couldnt attend, I would struggle to do one burpee and always took the options in class as I didnt think I would be able to do the harder options. ‼️CONTINUED IN COMMENTS - @efitpt on Instagram

GETTING IT DONE It’s great to see so many members doing the early morning sessions with another full class for BLAST this morning with @mdfitpt! A HUGE THANK YOU to all members for the way they have adapted to the new way of training since we’ve re-opened. Every single person is cleaning equipment before and after use, sanitising hands regularly and even helping the instructors to clean between the classes. The atmosphere is so positive in the gym and it wouldn’t be possible without our amazing members 🙌🏼 The new guidelines for Wales means you will be required to wear a mask from Monday onwards meaning YOU WILL NEED TO WEAR ONE IN RECEPTION AND IN THE CHANGING ROOMS but wearing masks is not compulsory when you actually start training.
