I was prepared for the call about dad - as much you can be prepared for a call that makes time stand still and flips your life upside down in one breath. But I was not prepared for the call that happened the next morning. I had turned my phone on “do not disturb” that night after dad died, after weeks of keeping it on full volume so I would never miss an update or a call from the doctors no matter what time of day, because I finally felt like part of the waiting was over. There was some sort of sad relief. But you were supposed to have more time. Not much…but enough that I felt like I was going to be okay. I would get through the next several months without dad, as painful as they would be, because I would still have my unbreakable rock to support me. But the hospice nurses called my phone the morning of July 6 and I didn’t hear it as I was sleeping. After several more attempts, they moved on to the 2nd emergency contact - Lou. His phone rang next to our bed and I shot up knowing something was immediately wrong. I called them back. She said mom had just passed away. I screamed. I swore. I yelled in disbelief until I was hoarse on the phone and cried, “THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE. SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE MONTHS. MY DAD JUST DIED YESTERDAY.” As if that was supposed to protect me from any more tragedy ever happening. When I told you dad died, I curled up on your hospice bed and sobbed. You rubbed by back with my head in your lap and you told me everything was going to be okay and it brought comfort in a way only a mom can provide comfort. You were dying from cancer and heartbroken losing your husband, but you still comforted me. Like you always did. And I miss that more than ever. So I just keep trying to draw from your strength every day, from your comfort, and from your promises that “it’s going to be okay” and strive to be just as strong as you were and just as unbreakable. - @ihavewineandwifi on Instagram

Over the last 10 years, policing and jailing people in Denver has accounted for almost a third of the city’s budget. But hefty spending and more cops on the street haven’t necessarily resulted in a safer city. The Denver Police Department is the costliest part of the Department of Safety, which usually ranks as the most expensive city agency. And spending on law enforcement continues to rise, budget documents show. Last year, taxpayers spent over $268 million on policing compared to $179 million in 2009. To jail people, Denver spent over $156 million last year compared to $94 million 10 years prior. As of June 15, DPD counted 1,586 sworn officers, 140 more than in 2009. But a bulkier blue line and an increase in spending has not equated to less crime. Violent crime — things like murder, rape and robbery — has risen almost annually since 2009, according to the National Incident-Based Reporting System, which DPD uses to track crime. The city saw a slight dip in 2010 and 2018, and DPD attributes a big jump in all types of crime between 2013 and 2014 to a change in how officers collect data. This year is on track to be one of the city’s most violent in recent memory. Many of the officials Denverite spoke to for this story cited population growth as a reason for the rise in crime. But crime per capita has remained essentially steady. Lisa Calderón, a criminal justice professor at Regis University and chief of staff for Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca, said she isn’t surprised. “I think we need to first stop using the number of police as a measure of whether there’s a reduction or increase in crime. We have to first look at what are the drivers of crime,” said Calderón, who ran for mayor last year and oversaw the Community Reentry Project for a decade. It was the end of summer, my first summer at selling jams and marmalades at the farmers market.✨ Eight months before that I was making my very first jar of orange marmalade in my home kitchen. ✨ Before cooking my first jar of marmalade I was busy raising my two daughters and working as a holistic nutritionist; fermenting all the vegetables, making kefir and kombucha, growing vegetables, herbs and flowers and baking. ✨ I started Le Meadow’s because I love authenticity and traditions in foods. I wanted to create little jars of joy with fruit, flowers and herbs to share with people around me . Introducing, The Mother of the Groom. Unfortunately she’s an often overlooked part of the wedding day. But I am on a mission to make her feel special. She’s full of emotion and the wedding can be a difficult day for her: she doesn’t really get a chance in the spotlight and I often see it’s a struggle for her to “let go” of her son. I like to visit with her, tune in to how she’s feeling throughout the day, and help her know how important she is. I like to do little things for her when I can, like start with the family portraits with the Groom’s side, and I involve her in the Groom’s “getting ready” photos. I also make sure I take pictures of things I know she takes pride in, like the photo of Steve’s ribbon rack and medals.
