Just a few minutes ago, the @CountyofLA Board of Supervisors voted to designate unaccompanied women as a recognized homeless subpopulation in the County.⠀ ⠀ We are so inspired by the leadership of Supervisor @HildaSolis in introducing this motion, and humbled by the support of the more than 200 individuals who helped ensure its approval by emailing or Tweeting at their Supervisor. On behalf of everyone here at DWC, THANK YOU for your commitment to ending womens homelessness with us! ⠀ As we take this moment to celebrate, we also recognize that our work is far from over. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. Covid-19 update 24th March 2020 In line with yesterday’s Government advice, and to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees and customers alike we have decided to close Northampton Motorsport as of 5pm tonight Whilst we are strictly speaking a Garage and we do have customers that could be considered key workers, the reality is that most of our work relates to competition, classic and custom cars none of which are essential enough to put any one at risk. As of today we had a 5 week lead time for rolling road work and a 3 week lead time for the main workshop so obviously a lot of customers are going to miss their bookings. Please rest assured that as soon as we are allowed to reopen we will contact anyone who has missed a booking and will be working extended hours to make sure we get everyone sorted as quickly and conveniently as possible. This underrated gem badly needs its sequel. Im pretty sure, each and every moment between Charlie and Max will make you smile, sad but at the climax, you will absolutely gonna lose your tears. Such a beautiful film! Also this film has some of the MCU characters, Wolverine, The Wasp, Falcon etc. Quarantine is not going to end soon, so take some free time to watch this. Maybe, it will inspire you in your life from many ways. Many of the audience believes this movie to be illogical or boring. Leave the critics, audience! Listen your heart. Police have confirmed the name of the pub which has been fined for breaching coronavirus rules by hosting a gathering for 500 people last Friday. The pub landlord could face a fine of until £10,000 The pub is The Gate Hangs Well in Syston, the building is owned by Everard’s brewery. We ask Everard’s for a response on this incident. “Whilst we own all of the buildings, all Everards pubs are run individually by independent business owners. We do offer support and as a local family business the health, safety and wellbeing of our business owners, their employees, their customers and their local community has always been at the heart of what we do even before the current pandemic. This has only increased since March and we are proud that our business owners have worked very hard to ensure that they are running covid safe premises which still offer a great experience. It is very disappointing that one business owner has held an event which has not followed the guidelines and we are currently investigating the matter, cooperating fully with Charnwood Police and the local licensing authority. As Samidoun Palestinian Prisoners Solidarity Network we stand full solidarity with Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat and the Irish Republican prisoners, who have started a hunger strike on 16 September as protest against the isolation of Dr. Hijjawi Bassalat by the prison authorities. Dr. Hijjawi Bassalat, who is a prominent Palestinian community leader in Scotland, was arrested together with nine Irish republicans by the British MI5, the Irish Gardaí, Police Scotland, London’s Metropolitan Police, and over 500 officers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in the so-called “Operation Arbacia.” We demand the freedom of all political prisoners in Palestine and Ireland, and call upon their supporters to organize solidarity actions. Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat, who is 62 years old, started his hunger strike on 16 September, as he was again forced into isolation in the filthy and unsafe Foyle House, a wing of Maghaberry prison in the north of Ireland. Irish Republican prisoners immediately engaged in a solidarity hunger strike to support Issam. Earlier that day, Issam’s bail was denied by the magistrate court. He will now proceed to the high court in order to await his trial in freedom. Dr. Issam Hijjawi Bassalat has multiple health conditions and has undergone an MRI scan this week. It is clear that for any person, let alone those who have health conditions, Foyle House is an unsafe prison. MIRROR GIRLS, a YA historical fantasy set in Jim Crow Georgia, is the story of mixed-race twin sisters—one light enough to pass and another obviously Black—who are separated at birth after the murder of their parents. They reunite as teenagers to solve the mystery of their separation, and to confront the deeply haunted past of a town in rural Georgia. 🌴 I’m so honored to be working with LBYR again, and especially my amazing editor, @alvinaling. 🌴 I consider this one an #ownvoices story, because my family represents the kind of color spectrum that society refuses to accept—even to this day. I remember the very first time an adult insisted to me that it was impossible for my brother and I to be full-blood relations (I was a child). I also remember the most recent time a woman refused to believe I could possibly be Black—this confrontation occurred only three months ago, and it’s just as painful as it ever was. (Swipe through for pictures of my brother and me). 🌴 Like many mixed-race kids, I’m passionate about standing up for our right to exist and identify how we feel we must—as well as our right to be considered family, despite our different skin tones. In honor of our 111th birthday coming up — we are taking a trip down memory lane to learn a bit about our incredible history. Lets start at the very beginning… Pieter Christian Richard (P.C.) was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1880. On May 31, 1899, at 18 years old, he stepped off a 4,500-ton steamship and walked down the gangway to settle in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY in pursuit of the American Dream. After delivering milk by horse and buggy, P.C. started a part-time home repair business of his own in Bensonhurst. Eventually, the business had grown so much that P.C. leveraged it into his own hardware store in 1909… and something else happened that year, too! P.C. and his wife, Odeila, gave birth to A.J. on October 11, 1909, the Son in P.C. Richard & Son. A.J. grew up in the business. In fact, its often said that A.J. was born to sell as he always had a deep passion for customer service. He spent time with his dad in the store at the age of four, and by the time he was seven, waited on customers after school and became an all-round hardware clerk. Its not surprising that he would later build the rock-solid foundation of P.C. Richard & Son. 111 years later the legacy of P.C. and A.J. still lives on in our company!
