Monterey 2003, Pebble Beach Concours . Ford used this weekend to introduce the Ford GT, and the Ford Mustang GT Concept, which would of course become the new Mustang. It seems in retrospect they needed the GT to establish that retro was a good styling direction, it was not a given in 2003 that retro was a legitimate idea. . Apart from the featured Ford GT40s, Bugatti was also well-represented. This new brand was showing its first car, the strangely rounded and squat Veyron. We’d seen spy pictures and rumours about this car, its 1000hp engine so beyond anything else at the time it seemed an impossible claim, there was no way it was going to do what Bugatti claimed it would! And the pricing was absurd, surely VW did not think anyone would pay for this overpriced blob! Still, the $1M price and claims of 250+ mph in complete luxury were beguiling, no one had reached this speed in a road car since the McLaren F1, and that was hardly a luxury car. . I’d completely forgotten the car displayed was the early car with the vents in the doors, they seem peculiar now. These early Veyrons are my favorites, the lines are so simple, the shape power and purposeful, the door handles metal, the wheels simple and classic; it doesn’t need any questionable decoration or overly complex surfacing to look expensive, regal, and stunning. Compare this design to the recently released BMW M3/4 for a good chuckle. . I’ve included the Spyker because I’ve always wanted one, the ItalDesign NAZCA because it’s Giugiaro but after he lost his mojo, and an odd Corvette whose story I cannot recall. . Notice the crowd is still not carrying much in the way of cameras, digital is still in its infancy. The cameras produce pictures good enough for these purposes, but there is still no easy way to share digital images. The iPhone is still FOUR YEARS AWAY from introduction, much less wide acceptance.
