These masks are hand embroidered in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas using artisanal and ancient methods of embroidery. 🌸Each mask design is initially hand drawn into a larger piece of fabric. It makes me think of cherry blossoms, of new beginnings and brighter days. 5’11”x4’ This piece is what started this entire collection. It wasn’t the first piece I made based off a Folklore song, but it is what inspired me to even do a collection in the first place. I was listening to Folklore for the 50+ time in the shower and My Tears Ricochet came on and I got an actual mental image of a tapestry, THIS tapestry. I thought wow that’s cool I’ll need to remember that, it would be a challenge. Then Mirrorball came on and I got a mental image of another piece. Then Seven and then I got out of the shower as fast as I could and drew all of these images out. I don’t know about my fellow fiber artists, but it is very rare for me to just get these images of detailed finished pieces where you can even see the fibers used to make it. It was a sign. I needed to do this, and even more so I wanted to push myself and accomplish completing a collection, something I honestly never thought I would do! I don’t know if y’all have listened to this particular song but if you haven’t, you should. It is beautiful, deep, powerful, and haunting all at the same time. This is what I wanted this piece to convey. There is a sense of strength and an impact from the all black fibers. It has a depth created by the layers upon layers and line after line of tapestry weaving with the pops of three dimensional fiber art protruding. I wanted the fringe area to be recycled sari silk draped with various fibers to give it the haunting aspect, ghostly. This song, to me, is about her fight for her masters. To explain this it would take me all day so if curious, google it. I clearly stand with Taylor on the situation, and really with all females in the industry bc you know the “equality” we stand for doesn’t truly always exist, another topic for another time but if you follow me pretty sure you know where I’m at on this. Symbolically through out the piece I wanted it to give the imagery of chains and tears. The continuous fight she and other female artists, and honestly women in general, have to fight daily to be treated with respect and compensated just as a man would is still a fight even today. Perhaps the most forgotten aspect of education today is the education of the hands. 🖐 Machines have taken over much of what human hands used to be necessary for and yet, we still need makers and fixers in our everyday life and if we’re not training our young ones up to fill those gaps, what will the world look like in 50 years? A favorite book on the subject of making and fixing things, Shop Class as Soulcraft, outlines the shift in our society’s approach to personal belongings: “What ordinary people once made, they buy; and what they once fixed for themselves, they replace entirely or hire an expert to repair.” This book explores a thesis that Charlotte Mason also knew more than 100 years ago- working with your hands is meaningful because it is genuinely useful. Little hands can do extraordinary things, if only given the chance. My children have woven wall hangings, used needles to felt wool, made fleece blankets, sewed seasonal decor, rolled beeswax candles, built furniture in the woodshop, made toys for our animals, dyed silks for play forts...the possibilities are endless! How do we make time for these endeavors? They are prioritized right along with math, reading, geography, and history. My children will not join the generation of children who can answer standardized test questions, have endless lists of data memorized, but can’t actually *do* anything. Handicrafts are an opportunity to do something well for its own sake. When a child creates something from his own two hands, the lessons are limitless. A child looks at a finished project with such pride at his contribution to the family. ☺️ I want my children to grow up and make a difference in the world. 🌎And so...we start here by weaving lessons of life and love and hope and peace into every thread along the way. 🧶 I’m so honored to share about #howwecharlottemason with some dear friends. My first weaving ever. (Unless thousands of hours of hemp macrame at the age of 16 counts) I used my own personal symbolism in the work, and embedded those intentions into each pass of the shuttle. It felt satisfying to make in such a repetitive, quiet manner.
