When I was a teenager, I always thought Love is all what is shown in movies and plays. Love is all rosy and it is about red roses, champagne glasses and running around trees singing songs. But When I grew up, I realised love is not all that flowery we imagined. Its lot more to all this. True love is the kiss early in the morning despite the morning breath, it is in the goodbye you wave when you know you may not see the person for long, it is the sarcasm and the ugly fights you have late in the night when the world is sleeping, it is in the tears from laughing so hard or the tears from the sadness. Its nothing like the fairytale you read. Its in the song you hear on your earphone and suddenly smile coz you think about that person, its in the small goofy things you do for each other. Film 3: The garden of words To me, she represents nothing less than the secrets of this world Makoto Shinkai has a unique and wonderful idea of love. His exploration of identity and longing continues after the masterful 5 cm/s per second with this. One of the most interesting things about his love stories is that they have very little romance. In kimi no na wa(2016), Taki and Mitsuha fall in love with out meeting each other. Koi. Love through longing, is what Shinkai talks about here. Shinkais stories are deceptively simple and this is no exception, chronicling the lives of a high school boy who falls in love with a strange, older lady. The garden of words uses incredible animation to give little hints of life to the surroundings; the rain is gentle, comforting. There is a tenderness to the film, Shinkai pays attention to the small details. His characters dont fall in love through grand gestures, they mend each others wounds by simply being there. The central question in The garden of words is whether to fall in love, knowing it is doomed. A perfect counterpart to 5 cm/s per second which was about falling out of love. While the film is gorgeous to look at, emotionally resonant and beautiful to hear, it sinks on its own weight. Shinkais more mature side gave way to melodrama and the understated brilliance of the film was lost in its final act. While it does restore its tone in the final few minutes, the jarring melodrama had already done its damage. Rating 8/10 - @arvindkruger on Instagram
