Love this post by @sitwithwhit and the work she is doing around “toxic positivity”. A positive attitude is essential to living a balanced and fulfilling life, it allows one to be hopeful, achieve more and has been linked with boosting overall health. The concern with positivity is when it becomes “dismissive”, when there’s little space for validation or understanding. It can quickly shut down a conversation, it says “nope, what you’re feeling and experiencing is wrong and here is why you need to be positive or happy.” It’s the exact opposite of what a person in pain may need at the time. If you’ve said things on the right side of the column— it’s totally okay! You mean well, you’ve got good intentions, but the person on the other end could be left feeling “woah not ready to go there yet!” Catch yourself when you’re wanting to reframe positively for someone. We either offer a quick fix or SHUT IT DOWN. ⁣ ⁣ Listen to me, we’ve all done it- we’ve all said “You’re ok! Don’t cry.” ⁣ I get it. Honestly? Sometimes I catch myself still doing it. Sad feelings are HARD, especially when we are already weighed down by our own. ⁣ ⁣ This post is meant to help you think about your reaction to sad feelings, not turn you into a scripted robot who needs to always say the right thing. You are human, there’s no way you’ll always say and do the “right” thing. ⁣ ⁣ Also? Your child will most likely NOT tell you they are sad with verbal language. They will likely show you they are sad with behavior, body language, and facial cues. The goal is to eventually be able to talk about being sad, but that takes long term acceptance and support. ⁣ ⁣ Try swapping out some language and see what happens. ⁣ ⁣ Let’s teach our children to accept themselves, including ALL of their feelings.
