Reflecting on @chadwickboseman who has become an ancestor too soon. I had the privilege of meeting Chadwick backstage at an immigrant rights march. He was kind, humble, and generous with his time as he hung out with @blmlosangeles. The children surrounded him with camera phones, saluted him with #WakandaForever and asked for selfies. He smiled and entertained them with patience and joy, talked to us about #BlackLivesMatter (he did a lot more listening than talking), and respectfully listened as my abuelo spoke about his responsibilities as a role model and the differences between his character as Black Panther, and the real Black Panthers. This was my only personal interaction with King TChalla in the flesh, but it left a tremendous impression on me, as has is unexpected and untimely death. Chadwick died of colon cancer. Colon cancer is easily treatable if detected early, yet it remains the second leading cause of death by a type of cancer. As with many diseases, a key risk factor of colon cancer is being African American. Interestingly, colon cancer, though prevalent among Blacks in America, is rare among West Africans, where most of us find our ancestral roots. So, while western medical research often points to our race as a factor, the truth is, racism is the real culprit. Days before his death, Chadwick was out in the streets of LA at the #JackieLaceyMustGo weekly protest, demanding justice for the hundreds of lives that have been stolen through state-sanctioned violence. Meanwhile, hed been silently fighting his own battle to stay alive for years - struggling to beat a cancer that disproportionately takes the lives of Black people, especially Black men. This hurts. Chadwick is now present with the Lord and among the ancestors when he should still be here. #CancerSucks. It is a disease that should have no respect of color, yet steals the lives of our Black loved ones at higher rates than other racial groups - it, too, claims to be colorblind, but is in fact racist because systemic racism touches every institution, including our medical system. This week has been tough to say the least. I had to get back in the streets, because I will never stop believing that it’s truly POWER TO THE PEOPLE. ✊🏽 Thankful to those who have continued to put their bodies on the line in the fight for justice. This was a beautiful moment in the protest today where we stopped in a busy intersection and held space for Breonna Taylor and all the victims of murderous, racist cops. Sadly, there are too many to name. The encouragement from the drivers around us, who could have easily chosen to be annoyed by the inconvenience of impeded traffic, was pleasantly surprising. We miss you. So much. We miss the smell of coffee from @broadporchcoffeeco, the conversations with customers and other shop owners in @agoradowntownmarkethburg, kids running up and down the aisles, and actually having some sort of schedule every day. I have not been very active on here lately, because I really dont even know what to say. Its hard for me to try to sell products and ask for your money, when I know so many are struggling right now. Im also having a hard time feeling like my business is relevant right now. Bulk bins at our local grocery store are closed, most places arent allowing customers to use their own reusable bags, the use of single use disposable products are at an all time high, and Im feeling a little bit defeated. What can we do during this time and moving forward to make a positive impact? One thing I did the other day was create a dog poop composter in my backyard! Im loving not using plastic bags for dog poop, and I cant believe I didnt do it earlier. Williams, our beloved friend, comrade, collaborator, co-visionary, mentor to many, and the Executive Director of PeoplesHub, has become an ancestor. We are holding E’s family and vast community in love and in hope. Elandria passed in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 23, 2020. They were 41 years old. A proud child of Civil Rights leaders, Elnora and Erven Williams, a twin and an auntie, Elandria learned early on that as a Black, queer, disabled and chronically ill person, you have to carve spaces for yourself because the system will not. In carving out space, E brought others along with them, and made space for so many more to join in. Their life was a testament to the collective, to claiming space and creating space for Black, Southern, disabled, queer, elders, youth and more. E understood themself as a part of a lineage, as part of a tradition of freedom fighters. They carried with them the histories and memories of what it took to arrive at the present. In their words, “I sit everyday in legacy… I feel it’s really important to sit in the legacy of the people who’ve done the work before us.” As a Unitarian Universalist faith leader, a yoga practitioner, and a youth leader, Elandria’s been part of creating, fortifying, and supporting hundreds of projects over their lifetime, with a focus on the global solidarity economy, youth empowerment, transformative leadership and spiritual fortification. Elandria was an internationalist and a visionary. A collaborator at their essence, they cared about people and did not want anyone to be left out. The PeoplesHub training program was crafted in large part by Elandria who came onto the team as PeoplesHub was beginning in 2017. In the three years of E’s leadership, PeoplesHub has grown into a vibrant community addressing some of the most pressing issues of our world. However unfortunately, the current situation in Miami and the United States makes staging a successful fair this year untenable. I’ve walked this street many times. But this time, I noticed the tree screaming out “love”. I needed this reminder yesterday, as I’ve been thinking about trees nonstop- about the roots of our pain, the trunks of systems that keep the pain intact, and the resulting outcomes, branching out. # My feelings of isolation and stir craziness have been more active lately, and I notice certain friends being slower to call back- everybody is going through something, and we’re all dealing with this collective trauma differently. Different branches of the same tree. # There’s so much I want to say to you all, and I find myself pausing, as the ideas and philosophies are bottlenecking. I have spent most my life keeping up with mainstream, Anglo-centric culture, while managing the confusing combo of guilt and rebellion as I challenged my family’s traditional, Chinese ways. Now I find myself yearning to learn from ancestors- ancestors of the Black thought that illuminate a whole other side of the US; ancestors of my Chinese heritage that built the railroad here. Ancestors of my direct bloodline, even as my own relationship with my parents suffers from differences in opinions, and culture gap. I am hungry for the knowledge, and to understand where my glorious speck of a life sits on the timeline. To understand more of the context so I can be a better woman. A better songwriter. So for now, I’m voraciously reading Octavia Butler, Bell Hooks, Audre Lorde, Cathy Park Hong, and adrienne maree brown. # As their ideas are synthesizing within me, I feel my music and approach to life shifting. # I hope today you get whatever your soul is needing- an outdoor stroll, a phone call with a friend, getting some tough love about your indulgences, a weed gummy, signing up for an online class, taking a guilt-free nap, making coffee, meditating, doing nothing, stretching, dancing to Lizzo... whatever it is you need, I hope you get a bit more of it today. Hi Everyone, We started Toronto Artisan Market because we wanted a safe, inclusive and friendly place for our members to show and sell their creations. And we wanted the same for other local makers and small businesses in our community. Our Markets at the Park are held in City Property, and permitted and approved by the City of Toronto. Our health and safety measures at the Market were verified and approved by designed City officials. One of our vendors was confronted by the organizer of a local Market she attended this past Sunday. She was bullied, harassed and told by the organizer that she’s a health risk and has been placed on a list by Toronto Public Health for having been a vendor at our September Market in Trinity Bellwoods Park. That of course is a lie, and can easily be verified by contacting Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600. In cases of health concerns Toronto Public Health contacts you directly through contact tracing. We were required to provide a full list of vendors to the City before the Market, for just such a reason. We normally don’t comment on unprofessional and malicious behaviour, but using a public health crisis to scare, and manipulate vendors is reprehensible. Specially at a time when local makers and small business owners in our community need more support, and opportunities. We do not tolerate harassment, bullying, or defamation of any kind, and we will take action against any such behaviour. We share this here, because it’s come to our attention that more than one vendor has been submitted to the same bullying tactics by the same organizer. That kind of behaviour is harmful, malicious, and unhealthy and should not be tolerated. Thank you everyone! The wonderful cooks at HLAY transformed into @tacosdrama taqueros (hot! hot!) for one night only last Friday, ambitiously hand-forming adorable masa balls to be transferred to a little red tortilla press (basically a toy) to birth a few hundred campechanos. The depth of our gratitude to YOU for coming out to support us in an effort to support our longtime partner, the American Civil Liberties Union, knows no bounds. The staff hadn’t been worked like that in a long, long time and their satisfaction of work purpose and their passion for hospitality restored in each little bead of sweat on their foreheads. Between all the tacos, the churros, all the cocktails (@dannygotdonuts!!), the tray of shots that @s_negandhi bought and distributed, and the platters + sealed bags of taco meat you pre-ordered, we were able to raise $2447 in profits, which we have donated to the invaluable @aclu_worldwide. Une pression énorme car de gros enjeux. . . On retiendra : les heures à poser la moquette sur toutes les marches soulevées quelques minutes après par des rafales de vent carrément impressionnantes, une logistique énorme avec des linstallation de grandes cuves d’eau pour maintenir au sol les chapiteaux (ce qui n’empêchera pas certains d’entre eux de se soulever avec ce vent et.....la pluie🤦🏽♀️) . . Une pluie battante qui décida de se déverser à louverture de ce qui devait être une soirée festival de Cannes. . . Galère!!!! Coupures délectricité incessantes pendant les discours officiels des personnalités politiques et des propriétaires (quel stress!!!rappelez moi pourquoi je fais ce job encore???? Ahaha) . . Le lendemain, près 2000pers accueillies pour la journée portes ouvertes avec RCI. . . Un évènement mémorable à tous les niveaux : des réunions menées en anglais (bravo Michel), une équipe qui a géré de ouf, Katty notre super assistante qui a géré la crise, léquipe de manuts qui a remis le site en état en 5/5, 1 première superbe collaboration avec Gino, Vakaband et le stress qui nous aura accompagné tout le long et quon aura dû apprivoiser. . .
