At the end of the day 3 black bodies have been tallied by, at least, 2 white folk in the past 3 days. And that’s all you need to fucking know. There will be a reckoning. And I pray to almighty God that it’s not nearly as harmful as I believe it will be. But I’ll be damned if I just sit and watch it happen. - @coacha27 on Instagram

Now Representing: Steph Foster PARISTEXASLA is pleased to announce the representation of Philadelphia-based artist @parisiendurag. Foster is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in photography, with interests in video, installations, music, digital fabrication, sculpture, and performance. As a first-person surveyor, Foster narrates how social issues and poverty affect societies systemically. His practice aims to illustrate how these systems are the nuts and bolts of further issues such as the prison industrial complex and the school-to-prison pipeline. His ontology juxtaposes sounds and music with visual media and most recently, works to tell stirring stories of mass incarceration and reveal reconciliation within urban communities. “My practice has expanded with my worldview as I’ve grown and experienced more. As I watch the injustices around the world and the assaults recently seen on black bodies, my focus has been to be a storyteller. I aim to propose questions and expound on the legacy of slavery and its connections to capitalism.” - Steph Foster Steph Foster is fundamentally self-taught and holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2019) and a BA in Studio Art from Michigan State University (2015). He is a recipient of the Snider Prize from the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the T.C. Colley Award for Photographic Excellence, and the Stinnett Award from The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Foster is currently on show at Brooklyn Museum and has been featured in various exhibitions extensively throughout the US. This September marks 49 years since the Attica State Prison massacre—one of the largest prison insurrections in history. From September 9th-13th, 1971, incarcerated men took control of the yard at Attica and demanded basic human living conditions and civil rights. They drafted a list of demands and summoned observers to facilitate negotiations. However, their peaceful attempts were shut down when the state responded with force. Police and correction officers assaulted and killed many incarcerated men and guards, and the state sent helicopters dropping tear gas. 43 people were killed. Today, as we honor the lives lost, lets remember that the same racist violence and inhumane conditions that fueled the uprising continue in jails and prisons today. Leaders continue to see the lives of people behind bars as expendable—and we must fight to change this. THE WINDRUSH GENERATION Today marks when The Empire Windrush arrived into Tilbury Docks, bringing with it just over 1000 West Indians from the Caribbean Islands, on June 22nd 1948. Britain called upon it’s Commonwealth territories to fill it’s severe lack of labour force after World War 2 to help rebuild the country; many being ex-servicemen who fought for Britain in the war. The British Government promised citizenship, prosperity and employment for those who came, this saw an estimated half a million West Indians between 1948 and 1970 including my own grandparents and parents, travel 8000 miles from the Caribbean to begin a new life here in the UK. Despite suffering unimaginable racism across the country they persevered and helped to rebuild a country that has BARELY recognised their contribution. Fast forward to 2019 the anniversary was bittersweet, as around the same time it became clear that the Windrush generation were rewarded for their essential contributions by them finding themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws thanks to Theresa May’s “hostile environment policies”. Many were detained, denied legal rights and illegally deported. TILL THIS DAY no apology has been received from the home office and little to no justice served. I am a proud descendant of this generation and I stand on your shoulders. Thank you for all that you did despite the discrimination you endured. It is my duty to fight until the day that racial equality, truth and justice is known for us all...I owe you this much 🖤👊🏾✊🏾🇧🇧🇬🇾🇬🇧 • • • • • • #repost @nathalieemmanuel 🙏🏾 #TheWindrushGeneration #TheWindrushScandal #BlackBritishHistory #EternallyGrateful - @hurcs on Instagram

Fred Hampton, one of the 20th century’s most visionary thinkers, was assassinated in 1969 by the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, at the direction of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI. Though only 21 at the time, Fred Hampton was a youth leader for the NAACP, chairman of the Illinois branch of the Black Panther Party, and founder of a multi-racial/cultural movement called the Rainbow Coalition. It would have been Fred Hampton’s dream to see the coalition-building of this moment in the streets and on the internet, to see people across identity categories, all over America and the world, face their role and responsibility in deconstructing systemic racism. It would have been his dream to witness a more mainstream realization that, in his words “racism is an excuse for capitalism, racism is a by-product of capitalism” and racial capitalism, which he recognized long before the scholars who coined the term in books and papers, is a global economic system poisonous to its core and devastating not only to the exploited but to humanity as a whole. It was this transcendent intersectionality that made Fred Hampton’s ideas so counter to the status quo and his legacy so crucial to our present reimagining of what change MUST be. This is a photo of Fred Hampton (representing the Panthers), Pablo Guzman (repping the Young Lords New York), Cha Cha Jiménez (repping the Young Lords Chicago), and Mike Klonsky (repping Students for a Democratic Society) at a press conference in the fall of 1969. #FBF to that time a couple of years ago right about this time of year in South Korea shooting the action film “Take Point” which at the time was called “PMC : Private Military Company” . At the time according to #bobwoodward new book “Rage”, #45 was threatening to go to war with N Korea behind the scenes while we were filming in Pagu about an hour south of the border.
