Reflecting on how her Jewish values have guided her work, she had this to say: The Jewish religion is an ethical religion. That is, we are taught to do right, to love mercy, do justice, not because there’s gonna be any reward in heaven or punishment in hell. We live righteously because that’s how people should live and not anticipating any award in the hereafter.” As Rosh Hashanah comes to a close tonight, her self-less wisdom feels like just the right lens to approach 5781. It is with great sadness that I share the news of the loss of my father, Richard Holtz, Sr., who passed away July 28th after a brief bout with pneumonia and complications from COVID-19. My dad shared the family business with so many people, including my sisters and me. He learned from his father, and believed the best way to teach others the business was through kindness and thoughtful training. He also believed in treating everyone he came into contact with as a member of our extended family. That ethos served him well as a businessman, and also showed his character and inspired others to behave the same. It is because of his leadership, with my mom Geny at his side, that H.J. Holtz & Son continues to serve the community as well as include members on our team who are excited to learn and advance in their own careers. He regarded the craft of painting and wallpapering as a profession, and worked to instill that philosophy in our company and beyond. Dad was a member of the Richmond Chapter of the PCA, Middle Atlantic Council, and the National PCA organization for more than 50 years. He held executive committee offices on both the chapter and council levels and was a friend and mentor to countless painting contractors, crew members, associates, and industry leaders. While it is hard to imagine this company without my parents, we are so thankful for their leadership, their instruction, and their wholehearted support. Walter Camp Football Foundation (WCFF) has partnered with two non-profit organizations to distribute PPE and meals to those in need throughout the Greater Bridgeport and Greater New Haven areas. The Central Connecticut Coast YMCA (“YMCA”) provides programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in twenty-four towns and cities throughout the Greater Bridgeport and Greater New Haven areas. Alpha Community Services is a subsidiary of the YMCA which provides Connecticut’s largest homeless shelter and permanent supportive housing sites. WCFF is donating over one thousand reusable high-quality cloth masks, over one hundred plastic face shields and hundreds of bottles of hand sanitizer to the YMCA and Alpha Community Services, which are estimated to last throughout the summer and into the fall. Westies Care, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization which provides food assistance to needy populations throughout West Haven, has been delivering free meals seven days a week to the needy. To date, through the assistance and generosity of Lorenzo’s Restaurant, Westies Care has delivered approximately 12,000 meals to the needy. The WCFF has funded a donation that will pay for the wholesale cost of product to be used by Lorenzo’s Restaurant to provide over two hundred and fifty meals which will be distributed by Westies Care. Connecticut Hospice in Branford is stepping up to help non-Covid 19 patients displaced from New Haven area hospitals in addition to their general patient population. As Connecticut Hospice remains at maximum capacity during this Covid-19 Crisis, the WCFF will be providing meals prepared and served by The Stand restaurant to volunteers working at Connecticut Hospice. The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut is a temporary “home away from home” for families of children who are being treated at nearby hospitals and healthcare facilities. #Remembering911: Las #Vegas lost one of our own 19 years ago - Palo Verde High teacher Barbara Edwards was on the plane that hit the #Pentagon. Theres a memorial dedicated to her at the school. Barbara was a foreign language teacher who helped build that department at Palo Verde High. She was also a big soccer fan. ⠀ ⠀ A few months before 9-11, she and two other teachers were involved in a car crash while returning from lunch. Barbara suffered broken arms and had taken some time off to recover. She had gone to visit a friend in Virginia and was returning to Las Vegas on September 11.⠀ ⠀ Although few, if any of todays Palo Verde students were even born on 9-11, they still gather to remember and honor Barbara Edwards. Its 2010. Regis and I are doing cameos in our friend Adam Sandlers movie, Jack and Jill. When I arrived for the wardrobe fitting, Regis and Joy were in the dressing room. He had his shirt off flexing his biceps in front of the mirror. Can you believe these guns, Kid? Joy was really laughing. (Note to reader: Those guns were impressive). My life and Regis Philbins life intersected in a whimsical way. Just when he became a big TV star I became a cast member on Saturday Night Live. I ended up doing an impression of him. Luckily he loved it. Regis was a one of a kind talent. Boy was he funny. We talked one time about the Regis persona he invented. He said it was just an exaggerated version of himself. What a wonderful character for me to play — rhythmically a brilliant creation. Regis was a man of the people. He never stopped appreciating becoming a huge star after the age of 50. Real talk. I voted for Elizabeth Warren because I believe she would make the best president. I also believe she would have the best chance of beating Trump this fall. Her plans are extensive, she’s a fierce af debater (see Bloomberg’s coffin), she’s toughest on guns and despite the spin you’ve heard, her route would get us to Medicare For All faster than Bernie’s, and without raising taxes on the middle class like his plan would. I had never donated to a campaign before, I had never canvassed before, I had never been so involved in politics before she entered the race. And I had to wait and see how she would do on Super Tuesday. And it wasn’t great. SO. I, like many, are now reevaluating. If Biden wins the nomination, he simply will not beat Trump. For the exact same reasons Hillary lost against him. He’s too moderate. He’s got too much baggage for Trump to grab onto. He won’t ignite the young vote the way Obama did and he’s just wrong for this moment. Status quo is dead. We need real change. It’s why I voted for Warren. And it’s why I’m now recommending that anyone reading this who hasn’t voted yet, VOTE FOR BERNIE. I voted for him in 2016 and though he wasn’t my first choice this time around, he is the next best thing to representing the values and policies that I find to be most important. Get behind him. Oh and please, Bernie supporters, act kindly when inviting Warren supporters your way. I’ve been called evil and awful and other terrible things because I supported Warren. Don’t do that. When Ruth Bader Ginsburg came to be interviewed for the Supreme Court vacancy Bill had to fill, she was told that it would be a casual interview on a Sunday afternoon. Bill knew that she was coming so he got out of his Sunday afternoon football-watching clothes and put on a suit and tie, and she came in very casually dressed. She was a little embarrassed about coming to The White House and seeing the president when she was not properly attired. But they hit it off. They had an extraordinary conversation about the Constitution and the role of the courts. It was a masterclass. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was someone I had looked up to for a long time—as a young lawyer, and throughout my time practicing and teaching law. She believed that the Constitution had to be interpreted as providing for the equal rights of men and women. She understood there were certain assumptions in the law that favored or disfavored men as well as women, and had the brilliant insight that she could demonstrate that lack of equality by litigating on behalf of men. Her great gift was not only being a brilliant lawyer, litigator, and judge, but also a warm and empathetic human being. She felt the loss of respect and rights that her clients felt. And she felt compelled to try to right those wrongs. This is a devastating personal loss for so many. But more than that, it is a devastating loss for our country. Her memory is already a blessing. When Your Childs Anger Triggers You When my little boy shouts at me, it really pushes my buttons. I just cant help it. I always end up shouting back, or worse. - Shannon Many parents tell me that when their child gets defiant, they cant help losing their tempers. And yes, your child will definitely figure out how to push every button you have. But if we cant stay calm when we feel provoked, how can we expect our children to do so? After all, their brains are still developing. Were supposed to be the role models. When you live with children, you can expect childish behavior. Its our job to calm the storm, not escalate it into a tsunami. Research shows that children and teens who are routinely yelled at are more likely to develop depression, anxiety and behavior problems, including physical aggression. Maybe you were yelled at and came out okay, but what would your life look like if you had zero self-esteem issues, zero tendency to anxiety or depression? Breaking the cycle of yelling is a huge gift to your child. And, since your child will learn compassion and patience from you, its a gift to your grandchildren. Heres how you can model self-regulation and emotional intelligence instead of drama and tantrums, even when emotions get hot. 1. When you first notice your temperature rising, Stop, Drop (whatever your agenda is at that moment, just until youre calmer) and Breathe. Remind yourself that it isnt an emergency. You cant avoid getting triggered, at least sometimes. But you can train yourself to notice when youre losing it, and to step away from the heat.
