And just like that this giant oak breadboard table and matching bench have been delivered! Complete with a sho sugi ban and polyurethane finish! The frame is made out of 2 square tubing and 4 thick flat stock with @rustoleum Tremclad flat black. The glue up relied on @titebondproducts Titebond 2, and the knots filled with @starbondadhesives. Both products are a must have in all shops! My @makita.ca skillsaw, belt and random orbit sander took care of the woodwork while my @makita.ca 5 and 6 grinders as well as my chop saw took care of the steel work! @diablo_tools sandpaper was used threw out the build And @waltersurfacetech abrasives where used to tackle the steel! This was such a fun build. Extremely challenging with a lot of thinking involved with this. From moving such a big heavy slab around and working on it. Modifying my tools and even converting my steel work table into a dolly to be able to support carry and deliver this! Also if you follow my stories the roof rack modification came in big for this table delivery! This client has done so much for me from introducing me to the amazing people over @eutree where these slabs are from and finding a way to push my limits on each project I love to push myself into the “how am I gonna do that?” And this project had a lot of that! AVAILABLE! This is piece 4 out of 5 from a very special pecan tree. 3 pieces have already found new homes. This grain pattern is unlike any I’ve seen so far from working with pecan. It’s incredible mesmerizing to stare at and has some beautiful striking spalting(which are the small black lines you see throughout the piece. It was fungus in the tree) I filled the large cracks( you can see the original condition in last picture) with fiberglass and a red pigment to transmute they former imperfection into a aesthetic focal point to draw your eyes to it rather than try to hide it. Where to begin. I traded a tiny cutting board for the top piece earlier this year. I assume it was a drop piece from a larger live edge table, but I have no idea. I actually started to seal the top months ago and screwed it up by applying too heavy of coats. Then I hurt my thumb and the whole thing got back burnered. Last week I put it on the router sled and started over from bare wood. And then I started sanding and oiling. And then I oiled some more. There’s a metric shit ton of oil on this thing, but man did it turn out nice. As far as the base, I wasn’t initially sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn’t want to go with a conventional look. It needed to be sturdy and stable from all angles which was a bit tricky with the asymmetrical shape of the top. I ended up with two equal tripods. This thing is very stable. I painstakingly tested it before I permanently fixed everything. I picture it as an end table next to a comfortable reading chair in a household with no small children.
