116 years ago a fire burned through the Big Basin area. It destroyed homes & businesses, including some lumber mills operating in the area & parts of the state park were damaged. With so much history being paved over, it’s nice to have something to remember Music Row by via Hidden History of Music Row,” by Brian Allison, Elizabeth Elkins, and Vanessa Olivarez. Elkins and Olivarez are Granville Automatic, whose new album, Tiny Televisions — released to coincide with the book’s release — was inspired by the stories in the book. Historian, museum consultant, and writer Allison grew up listening to stories of country music; his father, Joe, was a producer, songwriter, and radio personality (Joe and Audrey Allison wrote Jim Reeves’ 1960 hit “He’ll Have to Go”). 📕 Learn more about this book! For #tbt, some old building survey photos of Mount Pleasant Mansion (1-5) and Woodford Mansion (6-10) as Philadelphia celebrates World Heritage Week!! Besides Independence Hall (one of Americas few urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites), were a World Heritage City because of the rich array of historic buildings and cultural sites that are designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHL), including the parks gems of Georgian architecture: Mount Pleasant (designated 1974) and Woodford (designated 1967). Thanks to the City, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the stewardship organizations, and countless other people who have dedicated their time, energy, and funds to preserving these outstanding landmarks in the East Park! Seen here in our #TBT photo from 1940, a soda jerk takes a smoke break outside Parkview Drugs, long-time pharmacy and general store at the corner of what was then 63rd and Wyandotte. Swipe for a 1957 KC Star ad touting a 6 pack of Pepsi (in the new single-drink size) for just a quarter! If the art deco style looks vaguely familiar, it absolutely is. This is now the corner of 63rd and Brookside Plaza looking southeast. Currently home of @panerabread Brookside, the drug store sign can still be seen on the top of the building but is rarely noticed unless you are looking up. Many unique Brookside features like this sign are hidden in plain sight. Visit the historic Brookside shops to see if you can find more. To protest the visit of Queen Victoria to Dublin in 1897 Maud Gonne and artist activists including Alice Milligan organised a magic lantern projection in Parnell Street featuring images of eviction scenes on a gable wall. The protesters carried placards with statistics of famine deaths. The police baton-charged the crowd and one woman was killed. Notable Irish Cultural Revival activist Alice Milligan also travelled in Ireland presenting magic lantern slide projections. #maudgonne #magiclantern #irishrevolutionaries #culturalactivism #irishhistory #protest #rcccuratedcontent - @trishlambe on Instagram
