#𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝟖𝟔𝐮𝐬⁣ ⁣ What a week. We went from 100 to zero in a matter of days. It’s been rough to say the least, but we as a country have to work together to address this national threat to our well being.⁣ ⁣ The Bench started in 2014, the old restaurant in the space was called Pie In The Sky. My business partner Chad and I regularly rode Stowe and wanted to bring some of what we found successful with The Reservoir (Waterbury) to Stowe.⁣ ⁣ We found the space and fell in love with it, aliens and all. Steve and Cindy handed over the keys taking a lot of risk on a couple of beanie wearing nobody’s who wanted to really transform the space. ⁣ ⁣ We knew what we wanted to do with the menu, the name was the hardest part. It was going to be our identity and we wanted to connect to the mountain. The name was between The Hut and The Bench. Both deserved discussion. One representing the iconic Stone Hut at the top of Stowe, the other a hidden gem that all the locals knew but didn’t want outsiders to discover. ⁣ ⁣ From that conversation The Bench was born. We built the business with the help of an incredible staff, many whom still work here 5 and a half years later. They are moms, dads, friends and our family. Closing the doors last week was gutting. Releasing them to an uncertain future.⁣ ⁣ We were lucky the Stowe community rallied around us when we first opened. We ask that same community to rally behind our staff and the hospitality industry of Vermont. ⁣ ⁣ Keep your eye out for calls to action (#dont86us), some of our asks may be specific to staff struggles and others will be help with pressure on the state/federal government. We can’t afford to be forgotten as this shakes out, we want to employ all 45 of our staff again, looking forward serving you. I owe it to them to fight as hard as I can to reopen.⁣ ⁣ Thank you Stowe for your support over the years, it does not go unnoticed. On a small hike a few weeks ago, Wylder and I sat down and enjoyed the view of the distant mountains and the lake which we had just paddled to get to the trail. An elderly couple we had passed almost to the top soon joined us. After some conversation about hiking, skiing, dogs and admiring Wylder, the elderly man kindly snapped some photos of us with the view as the background. Wylder and I then grabbed a quick snack, we chit chatted some more, and said our farewells and parted ways. 📍Tasmania National Parks Hiking General Tips • 🇦🇺 Tasmania Australia • 🥾 Invest in a good pair of hiking boots and try to break them in before your trip. The most amazing hikes here are often on uneven surfaces and running shoes don’t provide enough support. These hikes are also often strenuous and some like Mt Amos are more of a climb and rock scramble and you really need to have appropriate footwear to make the hike easier and safer for you. Particularly if you visit in colder months when the ground can get muddy and wet. Hiking boots often stop your feet from getting soaked or slipping around. You really will miss out on the most spectacular views if you don’t go on these hikes, that you won’t see from the shorter easier walks. However we wear hiking boots often (even on easy walks) as we find them more comfortable and easier to power along. • 👕 Wear- comfortable layered walking clothes to keep you warm, but so that you’re able to take the layers off as you get warmer walking. Tassie is cooler than the rest of the country even in Summer. WARNING: weather at places like Cradle Mountain can change very quickly. You must be prepared with warm clothes and wet weather gear as it may snow at any time of the year. It’s important to be prepared. • 📝 The biggest misconception we had about Tassie was that the main “towns” like Hobart, Launceston and even places like Richmond were more “interesting” than less well known tourist places such as Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula. We ended up spending more time at these places as the walks were spectacular and there was more to do. • 🔍 We highly highly highly recommended you hire a car or even better hiring a camper van to camp at campsites during your visit rather than doing a tour. Particularly if you plan on visiting multiple parts and National Parks in the state. Zillertal Day 3 During our first day we got into a zone which hasn’t been reviewed on the guidebook yet and so we didnt have any information about it. These boulders sit in a marvelous canyon with turquoise blue water and thick green forests on the sides. We spotted a cool highball which had a bit of chalk on. It was one of the coolest things we have seen in the first days of hike so we planned to come back on day 3 to try it for real. I found out later that this was first climbed by @michael.piccolruaz and he named it “Der Weg Zum Horn“. The real crux is getting out of the first roof. From that point onwards the climb gets incredibly nice featuring some slopey crimps on a vertical wall and several technical moves until the summit. I dreamt to attempt it ground up but it wasn’t actually the case. A rope session proved to me that it was out of my reach. Once I climbed from the bottom, the first move made me feel the upper part just good enough: it wasnt too hard to freak out, but also it wasnt too easy to make a relaxing walk to the top. I felt I had to stay focused and, since I cooled down my fingers a lot before starting, it was crucial to not get my tips numb once I was upthere. I reached the top and I immediately realized how much I enjoyed this one. It would have not been the same if I’d have over practiced it with rope as I usually do. I’ve been getting a lot of DMs from people with upcoming plans to visit LT, wanting to know about the current smoke conditions. I wish I had a better answer, and of course, I’m not a professional weather person, but here are the conditions as I see it: Lake Tahoe has been covered in a layer of smokey haze for weeks and the air quality has been very unhealthy. Currently, Tahoe is not going to look like the crystal blue pictures you usually see. It looks like someone slapped a brown filter over it. There have been a couple of days where the wind changes and we get a clear day, but they are few and far between. Last week, most of the campgrounds and a lot of the trails were closed due to extreme fire conditions (I’m not sure if they have reopened). I’m pretty sure main spots like Emerald Bay and the beaches are still open. I know that sounds negative, but that’s my honest answer. I hope this is helpful to the people asking these questions, and hopefully things will change very soon △↟♡. UPDATE: Video on current smoke conditions in Tahoe is now up. Have you walked across the bridge at @grandfathermtn? Right now, they’re allowing limited numbers of people in due to #covid19 so you have to make a reservation in advance and masks are required. There’s good social distancing happening on the entrance to the bridge but not as much room on the other side, so unless you go out on the rocks, you may be closer than 6 feet to other guests. The trails weren’t crowded when we visited and many of the overlooks were easy to pull into. How do I wrap-up the Red Woods - a destination that’s been on my bucket list for a long time? It’s grand, beautiful, and amusing, but not like a gorgeous beach is. I feel like there is a sense of permanence and fragility. The trees are so old that it has lived through the Ancient Greeks, Mongol Empire, Romans, Renaissance, and 2 World Wars. We were fighting with spears to atomic bombs the time some of these trees have been alive. It shows their resilience. Yet, knowing that this forest is only 5% of it’s former glory makes the case of how easily it could all disappear. It could literally all go up in flames - the oldest and largest forest in the world. I hope these forests are here for the millennias to come because it is awe-inspiring. The wildfires along the west coast is the perfect metaphoric backdrop of apocalypse that is 2020, but I’m lucky that I got to see them. I hope - very much so - that the wildfires stay far away from this special place. I would love to come back and be awed once again. We were joined today by Rebecca and her family for a bespoke Snowdon day. They were out with Dan who met them bright and early in Rhyd Ddu. They then headed up our favourite route, the South ridge. They waited for the clouds to break on the summit but after a short,sharp shower they dashed back down the Rhyd Ddu path to finish in the sun. Сегодня мы сгоняли по кругу на Фалазу от Грибановки. Снега много, тропа утоптана прекрасно, шли легко и быстро, правда в кошках, без них было бы очень тяжко. Кошки, кстати, в Грибановке в прокате за 250р дают) Рада бы сказать, что мы такие до черта зожники и чувствуем себя прекрасно, но у меня уже болит примерно всё 💃 а позавчера мы на лыжах бегали на Снежной, но так как нет видео о том, как я лечу с криком а как тормозить, падаю, ору, ржу и ЛЁЖА надеваю длиннющие беговые лыжи, то смысла нет ваще никакого публиковать то единственное фото, где я ровно стою и улыбаюсь. А то получится, блин, как с сапом, когда весь инстаграм забит фотками, где на нем все красиво стоят-сидят, йогой занимаются с подписями я сегодня впервые встала на сап. Я решила, что тоже хочу на сап! Это же легко! А потом два часа мы с Сеней, икая от смеха, пытались удержаться на этой жуткой доске хотя бы секунд 10, а не выходило ничего! И два человека, разного роста и одинакового веса (вранье, я больше вешу), корячились и переползали друг через друга на доске, думая, что ну щас вот будет равновесие, а было только очень смешно, но равновесия никакого не наступало)) Короче! One of the best ways to explore Magnetic Island is by foot. An extensive 26km network of walking trails allows you to appreciate the islands natural environment, some of which is protected within the bounds of Magnetic Island National Park. March 2018 // we have previously tried to hike Cape Lookout four times. Once as a family — kids were too young and only made a mile out. Once with another family, but due to a land slide we couldn’t even get to the trailhead. Another time with three other families — it was great fun but we had 11 kids between us and a crazy rain/wind storm cut the hike short. This particular Saturday our drive to the coast turned snowy (this never happens) and there was snow on the tail in this forest that hugs the coast. The kids were bundled up warm and in a good mood so we made great progress. As we triumphantly approached the end of the 2.5 mile trail, we found ourselves at a parking lot. To call it anticlimactic (after three years of anticipation) is an understatement. We looked around at some signs and realized that here, at this parking lot, was the actual trailhead to Cape Lookout — the actual cape that sticks out into the ocean. The trail we actually hiked was part of the Cape Lookout State Park, and simply joined one parking lot with the other. No wonder the parking lot we started at never had any cars and this second one was almost full. Going out to the cape would add 5 more miles, and this wasn’t feasible with out young hikers. So we hiked back, completing an almost 5 mile hike round trip. Kids were champs and played on a rocky beach at the hike’s finish. This foresty hike is great one for kids! There’s a small suspension bridge, incredible forest, and occasional beautiful ocean views. Meet Johanna from Milwaukee, Wisconsin 👋 ⠀ ⠀ I decided it was time to change careers about five years ago. I left my job in an office and went back to school for Horticulture. After climbing with a rope and saddle for the first time in my arboriculture class, I was hooked. My instructor encouraged me to start entering student competitions, which got me in touch with a great tree care company and started my career as an arborist. ⠀ ⠀ We asked her what she loves most about being an arborist and what her biggest struggle is in the industry, I love how it forces me to overcome challenges. Every year, I find myself amazed at my ability to take on tasks I was afraid to attempt in months before. Its a very empowering job. My biggest struggle is learning to trust my skills and education as a woman in a male-dominated industry. A lot of women seem to be conditioned to second-guess themselves and Im no exception. ⠀ ⠀ Her favorite piece of gear? Petzl ZigZag/Chicane combo. You get the best of both worlds. ⠀ ⠀ When shes not working as an arborist, you can find Johanna hanging out with her daughter, vegetable gardening, playing her ukulele, and writing. ⠀ ⠀ What is one piece of advice youd offer to women wanting to become an arborist? Our youngest was still working on her stamina so we opted for a lift on the cog railroad to the top, but the views and experience inspired our girls to want to hike more. It was really foggy at the summit, but the ride up was gorgeous! Now when we are hiking they always want to make it to the summit and go find the very highest spot. We can’t wait to get back out on the trails this fall, it’s our favorite time to hike! Where and when do you hike with your family? We would love to try some new trails! Если любите парк Драконов и уже все там изведали- то вам точно сюда надо. ✴️📎БЕЛЫЙ ГОРОД . Делитесь и сохраняйте: Расположен в Пади Синегорной, немного не доезжая до Чистоводного. Дорога уходит направо в поля перед маленьким деревянным мостиком, после перевала и большого моста над рекой. До начала тропы- ок 12 км от поворота с главной дороги. Вполне проезжаема для джипов повыше. Заброску больших компаний делают на Газ 66 с Лазо. Тупик для тяжеловозов- мост из брёвен, он там один такой, с дырой посередине 🙈, не ошибётесь. От него до поляны метров 500, после первого брода По лесовозной дороге, никуда не сворачивая. Полянка слева. Точка начала троп . 1️⃣Если перейти ручей, и пойти прямо вверх по дороге- доберётесь до вдп Зуевский (после второго брода вам вверх налево по хребту и обратно в строну камней от Белого города ). 2️⃣Если с основной поляны через брод уйти правее на хребет- сократите немного путь до Белого города ( на кустиках от начала тропы были вешки). После прохода хребта выйдете на лесовозную дорогу, вам налево вверх( на обратном пути не проскочите этот заход/выход❗️). Как только появятся первые Мега камни- сверните направо, к камере здоровья, говорят лечит☺️. Сам город будет выше по дороге по левую руку. Многие от Зуевского вдп идут прямо на город, по второму хребту. Город хорошо просматривается с подходов к водопаду. Гулять там не перегулять.Весь пеший путь в круг ок 14-16 км. Джипы забираются выше, кто может проехать разваливающийся мостик, так что путь может быть короче. Пы:сы: наши фото весенние, планируем осенью туда ещё раз попасть. Очень здоровское место. 2017 was such a good travel year. I ran my first half marathon outside of a national forest and spent the rest of that trip in Ahwahnee (now known as Yosemite Valley), the ancestral land of the Ahwahneechee people. Later that summer, we camped in the Santa Fe National Forest and stopped at White Sands, home to the Mescalero Apache, on our drive back home. Though travel doesn’t quite look the same right now, I am patiently waiting for the day I can visit these two sites again. Cochamo Collection || The Mercenary - Pt. 1 || During the process of putting together a team of Jabronis to head to Cochamo, Nat decided to make a call. He knew a guy who seemed like he would fit right in. An experienced bigwaller who had been on a previous first ascent mission to Powel River, an all-around badass. Nat had met him in China and theyd tried some rad, hard routes together, while sharing a lot of laughs of good times. Soon enough Elliot Vercoe (@cuxycliff) was locked in and would make the long journey over from his homeland Australia to meet us in Puerto Montt, Chile. After a night spent in a trailer outside a packed hostel, our eyes burning from the stench of cat piss, we all set off to Cochamo. I knew from that first night in the cat piss trailer that Elliot was more of a Jabroni than all of us; upon opening its bathroom door and finding a stocked closet of leather studded jackets and masquerade masks, he donned his new outfit and started to dance. A few things to note about my identity: Although I am a woman of color and I experience racism, I benefit from many privileges as an Asian American. The model minority myth is alive and thriving - through the lens of white supremacy I’m generally seen as “better than the others” and easier to “assimilate”. I’m able bodied, have thin privilege, and am gender conforming. I’m also in an industry where I can experience financial stability and thus have the safety net to innovate. Just like leaning into the gray areas of what is or isn’t oppressive with route names, I want to lean into the complexity of my identity when it comes to racism and privilege. On and off Instagram, I try my best to infuse anti-racism into my profession, hobby (climbing), and community. Racism in America has had a deep impact on my immigrant upbringing and thus on who I am now. I’m incredibly passionate about it and It’s something I’m unraveling every day with the people and resources I trust. Although the adrenaline may fade as we shift focus, feel free to stick around and see my whole self. Or you don’t have to! Before my work around route names became very public I had around 200 followers and most I knew on a personal level. Sharing for this large of an audience isn’t natural for me and takes a lot of intentional energy. That said, I appreciate the gentleness and maturity everyone has shown me so far ❤️. 567,648,000. The number of seconds (give or take a few sig figs) I’ve been gifted on our beautiful Earth, exploring and soaring free. I’ve been able to hike through the snow capped mountains, run across the beaches, and enjoy our natural splendor. I’ve been lucky to have been surrounded by a pretty awesome family and friends. I’ve lived a pretty privileged life and I’ve enjoyed luxuries that many people in this world don’t have. Thought I haven’t spent much time on our home, there are a couple things I’ve learned: Love. Love everyone for who they are. That doesn’t just mean Packers fans or Bears fans. That means people that look like you and don’t look like you. People that believe different things than you. People that identify a different way than you. Side note, if you truly believe “All Lives Matter”, than is it that hard to say that a black life or black lives in general matter? We are all beautiful and important, so love your neighbor and don’t let your political beliefs ruin your relationships. Think. Think for yourself. Don’t just spew the information you’ve been fed. Why does such and such topic matter? Think critically, analyze the biases, the credibility. Listen to both sides, listen with your heart, listen with your head, and form your own opinions. Listen to others experiences and sympathize with what others have gone through. Nothing is Black and White...it’s all about the grey space. Side note...let’s protect our environment, our home, our mother. There’s so much that Mother Earth provides for us, so let’s preserve the natural beauty, the flora and fauna, and build a greener future for the sake of the Earth, ourselves, and our posterity. Commit. Commit to action. Don’t just trudge through your day. Seize the day, make your life (and others’ lives) extraordinary. Our time here is a gift...don’t squander it in indecision. If there’s anything this year has taught you, it’s that life is unpredictable. Don’t hesitate on exploring something new or taking advantage of opportunities.
