Another week, another MCM (Market Crush Monday). This week we talked to Himanee and Jim Gupta-Carlson from Squashville Farm. Their 4 season farm offers a variety of vegetables with the changing seasons, eggs, fresh chicken and ducks, and more! 1. Where is your farm located? Himanee: We are currently located in Greenfield Center, north of Saratoga Springs, but we just recently bought a 48 acre protected farmland in Easton that we will be moving to soon. This move is probably one of the biggest risks we’ve ever taken but we are very excited! 2. What is something you want people to know about your farm? Jim: One unique thing we do is that we raise animals to do jobs on the farm; we rely almost entirely on our animals for the health of our soil so we don’t use any pesticides to grow our vegetables. Raising slow-growing chicken and ducks also creates meat with a different and fuller flavor profile. 3. What’s your favorite meal to make with your products? Himanee: My favorite meal is a roasted chicken in the oven with simple seasoning (like salt and pepper) and a beautiful array of our vegetables. I love colors, so add a leafy green like kale or collard greens, a starch like squash or potatoes and something else exciting, maybe okra or some sliced tomatoes. Alex knew his drug misuse was spiraling out of control, but he never saw himself as an addict. Until one day, nearly seven years ago — by chance — the 41-year-old Boston transplant came upon a Narcotics Anonymous meeting within Berkshire County. Alex — he asked that his last name not be used — decided to join the gathering and see what NA was all about. The decision to learn about the 12-step program for people with varied substance use problems likely was a lifesaver. By the very first meeting, I knew I was an addict, he told an Eagle reporter. Alex says he has been clean and sober since then, with the help of Bob, a North Adams man in recovery through NA for the past 34 years. Alex and Bob were extolling the effectiveness of NA and telling their stories to those taking part in the Voices of Recovery self-guided tour Saturday. The downtown walk focused on organizations available to help addicts unclench the grip that drugs and alcohol have on them and, for many, become a vital part of their community again. On Saturday 5th September 2020, police executed magistrate-approved search warrants in Tooting Market. One warrant resulted in the seizure of illegal drugs and a male was subsequently arrested. Another warrant did not find any illegal substances. Following police-action and assurances by the police that these warrants were intelligence-led, the market initially took the decision to revoke both traders’ licences. It quickly became clear that we had acted hastily in relation to the eviction of Chris of The Lone Fisherman. For this, we are truly sorry and for any distress that we have caused Chris and the community in the process. We were pleased that Chris felt able to enter into a constructive dialogue with us on Friday with our local MP, Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan, acting as mediator. The Board of Directors of the Coupeville Festival Association announced the cancellation of the 2020 Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Festival would have been the 56th consecutive Festival. Believing that the Arts and Crafts Festival should be a time of celebration not anxiety the Board did not enter into this decision lightly. Public health and safety has been and always will be a top priority. In addition to our guests, there is a responsibility to provide a safe experience for volunteers, vendors and the community.
