For generations the East End has been a place where artists have gathered, drawn by the light, the connections among many creative friends and neighbors, and the effortless intersection of art and nature, the outdoors and interior spaces. The area has also offered artists the ability to design living and studio spaces in close proximity; for some, the distance between domestic and creative spheres is fluid and permeable. For the artist Robert Dash (1934–2013), the house and studio were at the heart of his life and practice—gathering places for friends and family and ample artistic inspiration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For nearly fifty years Dash painted, gardened, and wrote at Madoo (an old Scots word for “my dove”), a cluster of gray-shingled eighteenth-century buildings near the ocean in Sagaponack. He moved easily among the various barns and outbuildings to create winter and summer studios with adjacent living quarters. In Dash’s painting “John Ashbery” (1975), the poet sits at the dining table in Dash’s summer studio, attentively reading. “He had a very strict regimen,” recalls Robert Storr, a friend of Dash’s since the early 1980s and the former dean of Yale University’s School of Art. “He did most of his painting during the winter. The summer was for gardening and socializing.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “John Ashbery” (1975) is currently on view in “Housebound: Fairfield Porter and his Circle of Poets and Painters” at the Parrish Art Museum. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Robert Dash (American, 1934–2013), John Ashbery, 1975. Initial design proposals for a comprehensive revamp of London’s second-largest garden square, Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, have just been unveiled. Created by architecture practice Tonkin Liu for landowner Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, the designs are being pitched as “a global blueprint for shared urban spaces”. GBI began looking for ideas to improve Grosvenor Square back in 2017, with a view to upgrading the green heart of the community and bringing the gardens up to spec with the new batch of luxury homes and hotels that surround it. A design competition was launched in 2018, and Tonkin Liu was appointed earlier this year. The idea from the get-go was to create a template for contemporary urban landscaping that could inform other projects around the world. Tonkin Liu’s initial designs take inspiration from the original 1720s layout – when Grosvenor Square was created – and update it to “future proof” the square and “help do its part in tackling climate change”. These proposals enlarge the garden by some 3,000 square metres and reintroduce the oval shape from the original design, first laid out nearly 300 years ago. L.A. Countys planning a new 2.5-mile multi-use path to connect San Jose Creek bikeway, San Gabriel River bikeway, and future Duck Farm River Park. Honored to have been Juried into the American Impressionist Society’s Annual National Exhibition 2020 with my plein air painting “View at the Boat Pond, Central Park NYC” being held at Illume Gallery in St. George, Utah this fall. Due ballerine che si esercitano alla sbarra, Edgar Degas,1877 New York, Metropolitan Museum. Tra i dipinti più famosi di Edgar Degas, anche questo celebra la danza, uno dei temi più amati e frequentati dal pittore impressionista francese. In un sala inquadrata con un taglio fortemente obliquo, due ballerine si stanno allenando facendo esercizi alla sbarra: la posa assunta dal loro corpo flessuoso, che segue la sbarra attaccata al muro, benché possa sembrare del tutto naturale, in realtà è attentamente studiata dal pittore. Gli arti delle due ballerine infatti non solo corrono in parallelo alla sbarra, così come al pavimento, ma se osserviamo la posa della ballerina di destra possiamo facilmente notare come il suo braccio sinistro piegato e la sua gamba destra sollevata assumano la forma dellannaffiatoio che vediamo posato a sinistra per terra (la presenza delloggetto, apparentemente insolita per una sala da ballo, è giustificata dal fatto che lacqua serviva per evitare che dal pavimento si alzasse la polvere e che dunque questultima disturbando i passi delle danzatrici). Limmediatezza a cui aspiravano i pittori impressionisti consiste nel fatto che il quadro restituisce un brano di quotidianità della Parigi ottocentesca coinvolgendoci come se fossimo lì in quel momento (sensazione accresciuta dal taglio pressoché fotografico scelto da Degas).
