They say kindness is magic and can change the world. Parul Dua (@_raysofhappiness_) decided to sprinkle some of this magic around. Earlier this year, Parul began serving sherbat to construction workers, maids and her watchman, to help them combat the heat. She soon met their children and decided to help them with their education. Parul started by teaching them basics and giving them stationery. Over time, she noticed that these kids were fast learners and extremely enthusiastic. She began to push them; they learnt about the importance of Independence Day and she gave them different kinds of books to study and read. From helping each of them with the English language to sponsoring the complete education of two children in her class, Parul has showcased how one person can make a change. Besides teaching, Parul gave her students soaps and masks during the lockdown because safety first. Her next goal is to set up a parent-teacher meeting so that she can communicate the importance of regular attendance and education. In this pivotal moment in time of such intense and hateful rhetoric and policies that are tearing away our rights more and more, we must ensure we vote. But in order for voting to actually work, it is crucial to make sure we are also organizing. Even though the voting system is flawed in this country, voting is an important act. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be such a concerted effort to suppress our votes. The recent attacks on USPS by the current administration is an attempt to disrupt our ability to safely vote by mail. We must fight to vote because voting in this political moment is critical. Like protesting, voting is one tool of many in our toolbox in organizing for a better world. It’s not the end-all-be-all. We shouldn’t put all our hopes onto politicians. But voting can be a powerful tool to support progressive candidates who uplift the vital organizing work happening around the country. If it wasn’t for voting, we wouldn’t have folks in Congress who are fighting to save lives on a policy level. Our votes can help determine the lives and futures of immigrants, of Black folks, of women, of trans and queer people. Our votes can help determine our access to healthcare we need, which is especially important given our country’s dire situation during this pandemic. Our votes can help determine policies around protecting our earth from climate change. We must continue to organize, but we must not ignore the importance of voting, especially on the local level. The election will be here before we know it. I’ll be voting for Joe Biden, because I believe he is a decent person who will listen to calls for real change. I believe he and Kamala Harris truly care about the American people and the future of America. For context, I’m a devout Christian, and I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you are voting for Trump based on the abortion issue alone, please reconsider. Voting for a president based SOLELY on abortion is misguided—they don’t have a huge say in that matter. I don’t support elective abortions, but I believe in free agency, and there are situations like danger to the life of the mother, rape, and more, and I believe it should be up to the woman to decide rather than the government. The rate and ratio of abortions goes DOWN when there is more access to contraceptives (Obamacare), comprehensive sex ed in schools, and good welfare support for after the babies are born, and Biden supports these things. 👉🏻 @rosiecard (LDS) posted some great information about the topic in her highlights. September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Often, we talk about the need to refer people who are feeling suicidal to mental health services. But what if the person does not have access to mental health services because there are no providers available, they don’t have access to insurance, or the providers don’t accept insurance? What if the services are damaging and devalue the perspectives of people with lived experience and their rights and autonomy? Or if those services aren’t informed by or led by perspectives of different communities who need support? What does it mean to suggest people “deal with it” on their own when people live in communities that do not talk about mental health and actively discriminate against individuals with disabilities or are dealing with the effects of racism, homophobia, or transphobia? What if a person does not have access to food or housing? What if they cannot access needed medications? What if they are experiencing violence and abuse? What if they are not paid a living wage and are unable to meet their needs or support their families? To be committed to suicide prevention means you should be committed to building a world that people want to live in. It means addressing unjust systems of oppression and having open conversations about wellbeing and healing and equipping people with the tools and resources that are helpful to them and creating more inclusive communities whether that’s at school or at home or at work. Where do I even begin?!? Oh yea, at the beginning! A little over two years ago I attended a conference where the @therealestateinvesther Co-Founders, Liz and Andresa, invited all of the women in the room to have lunch together. While all of the women were connecting, it baffled me that just two tables could squeeze together all 16 of us (out of a 450 attendee audience). I said to myself that day, I will write a book titled The Only Woman in the Room. I didn’t have all of the pieces figured out, but over the next year I watched my female colleagues and was so inspired by what they were doing, that I invited 19 of them to Co-Author the book with me. I am incredibly honored that @therealestateinvesther organization selected this book as the first book to launch their publishing company.
