It’s generally been really hard for me to find a mentor figure. And when I asked successful people for advice, I was met with a lot of platitudes (ie. “just don’t give up!”) and not a lot of specific advice. No one was willing to give me any transparency about their journey, so not only did I not get the right guidance, but I also felt like a failure for not having accomplished X at whatever age—only to find out later that these same people I was comparing myself to had other resources and starting lines (ie. they had a trust fund, etc.). . . I transitioned into the sustainable fashion world from the world of arts activism/non-profits in 2014. Now that it is a rising industry, I want to give other women who share a similar background as me (immigrant, women of color) honest advice about what it really takes to succeed and find their role in the movement. No trust funds necessary, sis! . . That’s why I started an online show/podcast called @gritandglamourshow where I do honest interviews with fashion role models. And since I get a lot of questions about my career path, Im thinking of doing a Grit & Glamour Office Hours convo on IG Live so you can ask me anything you want. Do you fear carbs, especially after 6? Its one of those things that is said so often it becomes fact. But repetition doesnt make it true. Lets look closer...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trying to cut back or avoid carbs during the day can drive up cravings for sugary foods in the evening. Do we dig deep to avoid pasta with dinner but struggle to stay out of the kitchen in an evening picking frenzy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If we havent met our fuel need in a day, our body will give us signals to get this fuel in. Your cells dont particularly care if this fuel comes from quinoa or jelly babies but of course one carries more health benefits than the other.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some studies have shown our sensitivity to insulin is lower in the evenings but this does not mean we should therefore avoid carb. Whats key is to regulate our fuel intake with what our body needs and in truth we probably need less carb for Netflix than we do for a morning school run, followed by work, followed by chaos, followed by... you get the gist.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So balancing your carbs brings you benefits both in terms of productivity and hunger management - you may need slightly less of them in the eve depending on what your afternoon was like but they certainly dont need to be avoided.
