A paper published in Springer Natures Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology journal investigates the sleeping patterns in the Rouxs Forest Lizard in evergreen forests and in adjacent Beetle nut plantations. Dr. Nitya Mohanty provided us an outline of their study. For animals, sleeping in the wild is dangerous – to switch off completely in a world full of predators is risky. Therefore, animals must always choose to sleep in safe locations. We studied how such behaviour changes with human modification of natural habitats (forest to plantation), for the ‘Forest blood sucker lizard’ in the Western Ghats. Lizards always chose thin, unstable perch plants to sleep, as they allow for early detection of an approaching predator. In the Beetle nut plantations, opting for thin perches led to lizards using significantly lower perches, probably leaving them vulnerable to predators approaching from the ground. 27-6-20 Den Burg,Texel(Nederland) Na een minuut stilte genomen te hebben bij de Algemene begraafplaats zijn wij ons pad gaan vervolgen binnen Den Burg, op nog geen steenworp afstand staat hier een voor mij toch wel indrukwekkende bunker met de naam Texla-bunker, vernoemd na het gelijknamige huis vlak ernaast. Het is een communicatiebunker van het type R617, gebouwd in 1943. Hier werden verbindingen gelegd tussen het vasteland en de batterijen op het eiland. Russen op Texel? Ja dat klopt! De Texla bunker speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de Georgische Opstand. Op 6 april 1945 werd de bunker het hoofdkwartier voor de Georgische soldaten, die een opstand tegen de Duitsers begonnen. Texelse mannen werden opgeroepen zich aan te sluiten bij de opstandelingen voor een gewapende strijd en moesten zich melden bij de Texla. Hier wilden de Georgiërs voorkomen dat de Duitse bezetter om versterking zouden vragen. Door beschietingen van Duitse soldaten zijn hier de eerste burgerslachtoffers gevallen. Sporen van de strijd zijn nog altijd zichtbaar. In 2017 is de bunker in particulier bezit gekomen. Tijdens Bunker dag kun je er normaal gesproken een kijkje nemen alleen zitten ze nu midden in een verbouwing. Wanneer de bunker weer open gaat voor bezoek meldt ik dat op mijn pagina. In goed overleg hebben wij afgesproken dat ik en mijn vader het terrein mochten betreden met alleen toestemming om de bunkers van buitenaf te fotograferen. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan en naar mijn mening zijn de foto’s zeer geslaagd. Hou mijn pagina want deze week plaats ik een nieuw ww2 oorlogsweetje met als thema Texel (hoe toepasselijk). Magical Thinking, 1998, oil on linen, 42 x 87 in Eliot on the school bus looking through the window. Back then, I’d pack his lunch with carrots and fruit roll-ups and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a brown paper bag with a new drawing for him everyday.. a zany portrait of him.. or an elaborate old smiley faced man. I’d stand below the window and watch him.. getting settled on the bus, finding his seat and going off to school.. there was just something melancholy about the way that he would leave every morning.. our separation through the glass, him passing with the reflections of the neighborhood houses and trees.. the other kids on the bus being irreverent and doing all the things that school kids do. We did this for years. Those days.. so mundane when they were happening.. are irretrievable. Appreciate every moment! Foto seht Ihr, wie das Gelände in dem Game Reserve aussieht: Man juckelt mit dem Geländewagen über diesen ruppigen Weg, links und rechts sind jede Menge Bäume und Büsche, hinter denen sich die Tiere gut verstecken können. Trails & Parks Tuesday For the past few weeks, we’ve been highlighting some of the trails Draper City has to offer. But our parks deserve the spotlight, too! Today, we’re highlighting Draper City Park, with its covered pavilions, playground areas, volleyball nets, baseball diamonds, basketball hoops, large grassy open spaces, and this beautiful covered bridge – or, Watson’s Crossing. This bridge was built in 2012 by Draper City employees. Its namesake is Brad Watson, Draper Streets Manager, who also helped build the structure. Thanks to builders Jason Adams, Justin Kernes, Steve Linde, Aubrey Merrill, Rick North, Steve Siddoway, and Brad Watson. (Ribbon-cutting photo is from the 2012 grand opening.) Patricia Reveles helps her daughter Isabella with lessons while her mother helps in the kitchen, shot for the @nytimes. It’s been a huge struggle for her to not only work full time as a CVS pharmacy technician but also help Isabella with her virtual schooling. Patricia told me she’s incredibly thankful for the help from all the women in her life, her mother and sisters especially. They’re her safety net.
