Jean-Pierre Rietsch with his Riesling from the Stein vineyard. The large rectangular parcelle sits just over the wall from the domaine buildings. The 2017 with a hint of nuts and nougat on the nose. On tasting, fabulous acidity that is balanced with an ample viscous weight that finishes dry and saline. A perfect match for dinner, which was a plump roasted chicken and roast potatoes. Already in my early champagne days I was impressed from Pascal Agrapart for his straight, pure forward Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. ~ Some years he went with some vigneron friends to the region of Alsace and was impressed by the wines from a plotb with a mixed vine planting from Monsieur Deiss @domainemarceldeiss. ~ Back home he thought why not do something similar in Avize. In 2003 he planted the plot La Fosse à Bulls which is a bit more than 2000 square meters with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Petite Meslier. He called his new project Complantée. ~ Equal part CH, PN, M, PB, AR, PMes ~ Base 14 plus 20% Reserve ~ Natural yeast ~ Barrique ~ No filtration ~ 4 years on lees ~ Dosage 5 gr ~ I loved the first edition and Im still impressed by the newer releases even if the vines are still pretty young. Its different to his other champagne but I love it. ~ Light golden color, complex yeasty nose, honey, red apples, fine mouse. Em 18 de agosto foi comemorado o dia do Pinot Noir, essa data foi criada no estado do Oregon, nos Estados Unidos🇺🇸, em meados da década de 1980, e acabou se consolidando entre os amantes do vinho🗺️. . Embora a Pinot Noir🍇 não esteja entre as nossas uvas preferidas, que normalmente são mais tânicas e potentes💣🔥, alguns exemplares nos agradam bastante, entre eles esse varietal da Suzin, de São Joaquim-SC🇧🇷. . Nós compramos três garrafas desse Pinot da histórica safra de 2018🔝, e pretendíamos abrir a primeira com mais alguns anos⏳, pois já conhecemos os vinhos da Suzin há algum tempo e sabemos da qualidade e longevidade deles, mas com o dia do Pinot Noir pedindo uma garrafa, resolvemos meter logo o saca-rolhas😉. . Este vinho foi elaborado com uvas de vinhedos próprios, conduzidos em espaldeira. A colheita foi manual, com seleção de cachos, desengace e seleção de bagas. Após a fermentação, com controle de temperatura, o vinho estagiou em carvalho francês por 6 meses. . Com impressionantes 14,3% de álcool, perfeitamente integrados, este Pinot apresenta um rubi de média intensidade, ligeiramente mais escuro que o usual; traz aromas de boa intensidade, lembrando frutas vermelhas frescas, em especial morangos e framboesas, também lembrou especiarias doces, algo floral e uma madeira bem discreta. . Com corpo médio, acidez também média, e com leves taninos que trazem uma adstringência muito discreta, é fresco, aveludado e saboroso, com um final de boa persistência. . Embora o vinho esteja pronto e a garrafa tenha esvaziado muito fácil, com certeza vai melhorar com mais algum tempo na adega.⏳👍🏼 . 👉🏽Foram produzidas somente 2.030 garrafas desse vinho, e caso você encontre alguma dando sopa por aí, recomendamos fortemente a aquisição.👈🏽 . . @hartenberg_wine_estate Riesling 2017. SWIPE LEFT for TASTING NOTES 🍷 🍷 After soaking up the amazing history & heritage of Hartenberg Wine Estate, we started the tasting with the Estate Riesling 2017. Riesling is a funny topic in South Africa for me, some prefer it off dry, some prefer it sweet & some prefer it bone dry. I like all 3, but my preference is bone dry. Hartenberg have made the different examples over the years & currently sell an “Occasional Riesling” which is pretty amazing for an off dry version too. But this Riesling was expressive, complex, racy with beautiful minerality. A wine that compliments food but easily drank on its own with a good view. Serve this very chilled & experience it warming up. 🍷 🍷 This beautiful Riesling got 90 points from @timatkinmw & 91 points from @decanter & I have to say that I totally agree (not that my opinion matters nearly as much, it just backs my rating up). Hartenberg are so consistent, with their Riesling achieving between 90 and 93 points from Tim Atkins for their 2013 – 2018 vintages. Watch out for the almost released 2018 which got 93 points 😉. Now ratings are hugely contested across the industry & it’s not the most important thing, but it provides a guide or baseline to distinguish quality & consistency. Well done Hartenberg, some very distinguished people have told me this is a beautiful expression of 🇿🇦 Riesling & one of the best at it. What matters most is that I really enjoyed it. So if you haven’t tried it or begun a Riesling adventure, really do it. 2012 Keller G-Max - Immediately beguiling on opening. An utterly incandescent nose that I could have sniffed for hours. It smells concentrated; layers of passionfruit, lime, mango, peach vanilla and peach swirling over floral and crushed rock perfume. Crackles with tension and energy on the palate showing lime, lemon sherbet, wet rocks and pith. Generous, precise and delicate, the acid is tightly coiled, tuned to perfection over a long stony finish. Immensely powerful despite being nimble and graceful. An absolutely stunning wine. Having drunk and enjoyed a few of the 12 Kirchspiel and Hubacker GGs in the last year I’ve often found myself wondering whether the G-Max could be that much better and whether it was worth chasing. Vinho elaborado com corte muito original composto por 30% Ancellotta, 30% Tannat, 30% Teroldego, 5% Alicante Bouschet e 5% Tempranillo. Uvas provenientes do Vale dos Vinhedos de vinhas com idade entre 15 e 40 anos que foram secadas por “apassimento” por 45 dias em caixas de madeira, perdendo água e concentrando açúcares. Após fermentação, matura por 24 meses em barricas de carvalho francês de segundo uso para finalmente passar 10 meses afinando na garrafa. Resultado: taninos e acidez marcantes mas em perfeito equilíbrio e harmonia. Persistente. Lembra os vinhos de qualidade do Vêneto, num estilo que classificaria entre um Ripasso e um Amarone... Je me souviens avoir eu Gérard au téléphone ce mois d’août 2017 quelques jours avant les vendanges, il était dépité, le Sirocco (vent Saharien) venait de faire des ravages sur le Sciacarellu et le Vermentinu du Domaine. Il aura fallu la malice et le génie du jeune vigneron pour renverser la vapeur en créant 2 cuvées éphémères finement baptisées du nom de leur bourreau. Ce judicieux assemblage de Sciacarellu et d’Elegante possède un nez discret et subtil, pour autant bien complexe et évoluant très vite à l’aération, carafage à proscrire pour profiter de chaque instant ... Le plus dingue étant celui à 2h d’ouverture qui dévoile les herbes aromatiques du maquis corse, en tout cas ses épices. A l’ouverture l’éventail de senteurs s’étale harmonieusement de l’orange sanguine à la violette, aux notes végétales d’herbe fraîchement coupée, aux touches de graphite, évoluant sur de petites baies rouges mais aussi des fruits à chair jaune comme le melon et le butternut. La bouche est filiforme, tout en finesse, elle s’anime avec grande classe, les baies juste infusées confèrent au vin une dimension aérienne, de la justesse et une buvabilité déconcertante. Le glou-glou cher aux nouveaux sommeliers régale et témoigne de l’adaptabilité du jeune vigneron. Enólogo del Año DESCORCHADOS 2021: Francisco Baettig, Errázuriz Cuando Francisco Baettig llegó a hacerse cargo de los vinos de Errázuriz en 2003, la escena chilena era muy distinta a la actual. Esa cosecha tremendamente cálida -un debut difícil- coincidía con vinos que buscaban la súper extracción y la extrema madurez, tintos que no se avergonzaban para nada de 200% de barricas nuevas en sus crianzas. Era la moda. Pero como a otros colegas de su generación, a Baettig le hicieron muy bien los viajes, le abrieron la cabeza. Y con todos esos viajes, y los vinos que supusieron en su registro personal, poco a poco comenzó una revolución al interior de Errázuriz que transformó por completo el portafolio de esta tradicional bodega chilena. Hoy la fruta y la expresión del lugar mandan en vinos como Las Pizarras Pinot Noir y Chardonnay o el excelente Viñedo Chadwick que, en su añada 2018, elegimos como tinto del año. Las últimas noticias de este enólogo ahora vienen del sur, de su propio viñedo y su propia marca. I had pretty good luck with the other Four Vines wine The Kinker cab, so I figured Hey .. Lets try the Zin!?! A few interesting things about this one. The aroma is full of dark fruits that circles your nose... and overpowering raisins! I hate raisins! A little high alcohol whiff when first opened (15% ABV will do that to ya!) but quickly went away. Flavors of RAISINS, blueberry and charcoal.. and raisins! The finish was really VERY interesting...of course those damn raisins hung around but once that dissipates, you get a surprise rush of smooth milk chocolate, cream and caramel... no raisins ! Yay ! While this one is not one of my favorite Zins, I will not pour it down the drain... and that gives it a degree of credibility in my book. Maybe an overnight stay airing out might help kill off the RASINS! . I know it will appeal to Zin-fanatics who like something new and love RAISINS ! Normally sourced from the Canberra district, the bushfires of 2020 put an end to that. The fruit for this release comes from the Yarra Valley. There are some small plantings of Riesling around the region (a surprise to many), this one comes from @debortoliwines Dixon Creek site. A beautifully fragrant wine with pretty white flowers and hint of honeyed tones. Limes are rife throughout with fine touches of meringue peaks and cut green apple. ✨ Work Life Balance✨ Live to work or #WorktoLive? I know which camp I squarely belong in. I love being a physician- Ive worked years for it and spent my 20s and early 30s training to be a gastroenterologist. But the truth is that many of us come out the other side riddled with debt and with significant quality of life issues. Burnout happens all the time and we may wonder what exactly we signed up for. I went through it and I know several physicians who left clinical medicine to pursue other careers. While Im passionate about my work and give a lot to my patients, I want to be able to spend time with my family and friends and not miss crucial events in their lives. I think that balance is worthy and I dont feel guilty about it. I found a practice that believes in this as well, which has made being a physician worthwhile. My family knows that when Im on call and have to go in for an emergency procedure- its ok. Work knows that sometimes I have to move patients around to make it to a school event- thats also ok. I think its important to figure out what matters most to you early on in training. Prioritize your mental health, family, friends and hobbies. Having these in place will allow you to be a better physician. 2002 Château Figeac from #StEmilion. 2002 is one of the weaker Bordeaux vintages of the past 20 years, but some of the wines are drinking well early and there are indeed some bright spots. This Figeac is good, but isn’t quite in the great category. There are some green notes to go along with the fruit, but there is still enough to like here. Tobacco, Provençal herbs, plum, black cherry, and truffle dominate the aromas. The palate is straightforward and smooth, with a bit of an acidic bite on the finish. How is it already September?! Comme le domaine ne se limite pas à la production viticole, l’oeuvre ne saurait se limiter à la seule représentation du sujet, bien que sublimé par ces couleurs exquises que nous offre le vin 👉🏻 La mise en mouvement de la peinture est la clé de cette création : de la bouteille au verre, c’est toute la beauté de l’expérience Mentone.⠀ ⠀ 👩🏻💻 En commençant mon travail de recherche, il m’est paru évident d’exprimer en peinture une expérience. J’avançais sur plusieurs pistes mais aucune ne m’avait convaincu. Parallèlement, les luminaires en forme de bouteilles dans le restaurant du domaine m’avaient interpellée puis c’est à la lecture de l’interview de @wine.by.alex avec Marie-Pierre et Nicolas que j’ai mesuré les défis auxquels ils étaient confrontés : promotion de l’activité viticole, du terroir et du territoire mais avec un domaine de l’arrière pays varois ne se situant pas sur une zone de passage... l’enjeu est de taille. ⠀ 👩🏻🎨 En somme : une superposition des bouteilles inspirée par la décoration du domaine, le mouvement de l’oeuvre pour exprimer et rendre acteur de l’expérience Mentone, puis selon la lecture : des verres allongés pour l’extension du plaisir ou les flûtes pour la célébration des moments... et enfin, le retour du verre à la bouteille, clin d’oeil aux activités mises en oeuvre par les propriétaires pour la promotion de leurs produits. ⠀ ⠀ Maintenant que le mystère est levé, qu’en pensez-vous ? It’s not German in style...or Alsatian, or Australian, or American. It’s Niagara escarpment and it’s crazy good! Beautifully aromatic obviously, with lovely texture and a bright acidity that will wipe clean any soft cheese or creme brûlée you throw at it. Sarde allinguate e Grillo: freschezza e voglia di mare davanti a meravigliose distese di verde. Ecco la ricetta: Ingredienti sarde fresche farina di semola rimacinata (q.b.) aceto di vino olio per friggere sale e pepe Procedimento: 1. Pulire le sarde o acquistarle già deliscate e aperte a libretto. 2. Lasciarle macerare per alcuni minuti in aceto di vino. 3. Asciugarle e passarle nella farina di semola rimacinata. 4. Friggere per pochi minuti in abbondante olio ben caldo. 5. Aggiungere un pizzico di sale e pepe a piacimento. 6. Godersele con un calice di Grillo Sallier de La Tour (immaginando di essere in Sicilia) ~ Sicilian sardines and Grillo: enjoying the fresh taste of the ocean whilst looking out over beautiful seas of green. Recipe as follows: Ingredients: • fresh sardines • fine semolina flour • white wine vinegar • oil for frying • salt and pepper Method: 1. Clean the sardines or buy them already cleaned and butterflied 2. Marinate in white wine vinegar for a few minutes 3. Drain the sardines and coat them in the fine semolina flour 4. Fry for a few minutes in hot oil until golden 5. Season to taste 6. As uvas Peverellas foram caçadas em vinhedos nos caminhos de pedra, Bento Gonçalves. O mosto fermentou com as cascas por 7 dias, e após o término da fermentação, foi envelhecido em barricas de brandy de Carvalho Francês por 3 meses, daí então é engarrafado sem filtração. Hosted by Taub Family Selections (@taubfamilyselections), the lively conversation was moderated by Dr. Laura Catena (@bodegascaro ) and featured Anne Trimbach (@trimbach ), Laure Colombo (@vinscolombo ), and Alessia Collauto (@travaglinigattinara ). El sábado hicimos cata de estos vinos 4 taaaaann diferentes🍇 Son vinos sin madera de diferentes variedades y denominaciones de origen. Al ser vinos sin madera lo que queríamos apreciar es el carácter propio de cada variedad porque como no hay aromas ni sabores aportados por la barrica, todo lo que percibimos en nariz y en boca proviene de la fruta. De esa forma puedes reconocer muy bien las características más representativas de cada variedad. Para hacer catas de este estilo hay que seleccionar vinos que se muevan en un mismo rango de precios, para que todos jueguen en el mismo nivel, que sean (a poder ser) de la misma añada y que sean 💯x 💯de la misma variedad (monovarietales). También es interesante elegir vinos de regiones diferentes para ver cómo les afecta el clima y el suelo, mis vinos seleccionados fueron: Bierzo - Mencía Toro - Tinta de Toro Cariñeña - Garnacha Jumilla - Monastrell Los vinos los compré en Lidl ajustándome a lo que había en ese momento, no fueron más de 15 euros así que os invito a hacer la cata y que comprobéis que diferentes son! Negro Roero Riserva Sudisfá 2013. Was more than a year ago since Ive had this, maybe even two years so it was time to see how it was agibg. Actually still very young in development. Really clean scent with bit of cedar and spice. Cherries and a hint of berries, quite structured for Roero. Salty liquorice and mineral. Not so much chalk but more the scent of whet stones. Good length, intensity and complexity. Got two left so I have to look carefully when to drink these. Specially seeing that this wine has a minimal development. Which is quite impressive. HAVE YOU ever SEEN WINE being BOTTLED? We recently bottled the 2018 OVX G Major 7 Cabernet Sauvignon. GM7 is the culmination of countless hours in the vineyard and winery. This bottling all began in March 2018 as the ground at our red rock Oakville vineyard became warm from the Spring sunshine that woke the vines from their winters sleep. Next, tiny shoots emerged, carrying what would be the years harvest all within the first inch of growth. Only ten percent of those shoots were chosen for harvest - and their fruit picked only when perfectly ripe throughout September and October. Over 30 different lots were picked and sorted by hand and then gently fermented. Next the wine was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, carefully evaluated and cared for on its journey. Throughout the aging process the many separate lots were blended until we had the extraordinary expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that we bottled - a true representation of Mother Nature and our special red earth from 2018. No final do século XIX, alguns produtores acabaram a perceber que o vinho parado na madeira recebia notas aromáticas melhores e mais complexas do que os conservados em materiais diferentes, como pedra e terracota.⠀ ⠀ A madeira garante todos estes atributos porque o seu barril permite o refinamento devido à porosidade das fibras que proporcionam a oxigenação na medida. 🏠 Château Le Clos du Notaire @clos_du_notaire 📍 Côtes de Bourg • 🇬🇧🇬🇧 In commentary ⤵️ • Visite et rencontre en compagnie d’Amélie OSMOND vigneronne du domaine. • Lors de mon retour de vacances, j’ai fait un petit crochet par Bourg sur Gironde pour rencontrer Aurélie dans le cadre du #collectif21 . Avant de rentrer dans les détails de cette rencontre, je tiens à dire que c’était juste génial 😁. • Nous sommes le 14 juillet, temps magnifique, nous arrivons au château où Amélie nous accueille. Directement, la discussion s’engage et nous partons dans les vignes et plus précisément devant la Gloriette. C’est un petit édifice religieux qui servait autrefois lorsque les cuves sortaient du chai, elles passaient par cet endroit, étaient bénies puis descendaient au fleuve pour la commercialisation. C’est sur ce perron qu’Amélie nous a présenté le travail qu’elle mène au côté de son conjoint Victor MISCHLER. Depuis la reprise du domaine en 2015, c’est par logique qu’ils ont entamé les démarches de conversion en agriculture biologique. Leur but étant de respecter l’environnement ainsi que la faune et la flore qui les entoure. Pas de désherbage dans les vignes par exemple. Seuls des engrais verts sont utilisés. Tout est pensé pour que la nature s’exprime du mieux possible. Le terroir est principalement situé sur des anciennes carrières de calcaire, c’est donc un lieu propice à la culture de la vigne. Sur un ensemble de 21 hectares, le domaine produit deux catégories de vin : les vins de Bordeaux et les Cuvées Borderline. • Une excellente après-midi passée avec Amélie. In 2019 harvest was crazy. We picked all of our fruit within a 2 week window! Between picking the vines, sorting fruit, managing fermentation’s, punch downs and stormy weather closing in it was safe to say the phrase #ClusterF@*#!! was used a few times... . . Then 2020 started... @usdoingwine had no idea what to call this new #Grenache we experimented with from #EquusVineyard and this phrase kept popping up again and again due to the curveballs 2020 threw us. We sketched a few other names and ideas but kept returning to this. ⛅️ ⛈ . . Sourced from a high elevation vineyard north of the Yakima Valley AVA our goal was a new, vibrant, fresh style. This wine is made in a similar style to Beaujolais Nouveau which means we don’t crush the clusters at all. Instead we do a #CarbonicMaceration where we put the clusters whole into a fermentor and leave it closed for a few weeks. Each berry starts to ferment intrinsically while attached to the stems. Making for thousands of mini fermentation’s in each grape before they start to burst and crack open. . . The result is a beautiful bright and mineral driven wine that has amazing aromas with little tannin. Making for a refreshing red wine that can be enjoyable chilled or room temperature! . . Ingredients: Live Certified grapes, native yeasts and malolactic bacteria, aged in 500L puncheon without sulfur addition for 5 months. Small 10ppm addition right before bottling. 💜 . .
