The last days of Zeenat Mahal: Zafars favorite wife! Begum Zeenat Mahal, the favorite wife of Bahadur Shah Zafar, spent her final days in exile in Rangoon. She, along with Zafar, was made to stay in a square building made of woods containing four rooms- one for Bahadur Shah Zafar, the second for her, and the other two for the family of two of her sons. After Zafar died in 1862, suffering a paralytic stroke, the British government granted her a monthly stipend of Rs. 120. She remained in detention for another 4 years. On 16 June 1866, release orders were issued for her with the condition that she would continue to stay in Rangoon. Her stipend was also increased to Rs 250 per month. Towards the end of her life, after continued requests citing her old age and satisfactory moral character, her stipend was increased to Rs. 500. Zeenat Mahal became an opium addict in Rangoon- her intake being somewhere around 10 grams per day. She had a constant complaint of indigestion causing severe colic attacks. In 1884, she suffered an acute attack and remained ill till November. Never fully recovering, she complained of severe pain on 8 July 1886, and ran high fever for five days continuously, causing her many sleepless nights. On the eighth day, the pulse began sinking and on 17 July 1886, she breathed her last. She was buried alongside Bahadur Shah Zafars grave in accordance with the wishes of her daughter-in-law, Shah Zamani Begum, and grandson, Jamshed Baksh. The Chief Commissioner gave a grant of Rs. 1000 for her funeral. Three bronze sculptures stolen from a southern Indian temple more than 40 years ago were found in the UK, and returned to Indian government officials this week. The bronze sculptures represent some of Hinduisms most revered deities - Lord Ram, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman, all part of the same set of idols. They belong to a 15th Century temple built during the Vijayanagara empire, located in Anandamangalam village in Tamil Nadu state, and were stolen in 1978. Vijayanagara was once one of the most important trading centres in the world. Its taken years of work by a group of art enthusiasts, investigations by police teams in two countries, and efforts from Indian diplomats in the UK, to help bring them back. Yogita Limaye (@yogita.limaye) reports on how the idols were discovered. Swipe up in our IG stories. - @bbcnewsindia on Instagram

The beautiful Château Kapurthala in Mussoorie was once home to Maharaja Jagjit Singh, a true renaissance ruler. The Maharaja modeled his state along French lines. He was a close friend to Queen Victoria, spoke exquisite French, only drank French Evian water (which was especially shipped from France) and turned Kapurthala into “Paris of the East”! Maharaja’s grandson, Brigadier HH Maharaja Sukhjit Singh continues to reside in Kapurthala and has recently collaborated on a beautiful biography of his grandfather with the historian and author, Cynthia Meera Frederick. We are lucky to have the Maharaja and Cynthia Frederick on our panel tomorrow to talk more about Château Kapurthala and its history! Framed by arches, three young women pose dramatically for Samuel Bourne’s camera. Labeled “Bayadères” (a French feminine noun for “dancers”), these women were known as “nautch girls” (“nautch” being the anglicized corruption of the Hindi wordnaach, meaning “dance”). In Victorian times many British and some Indians disapproved of many forms of dance. Lord Lytton (the British viceroy in India from 1876 to 1880) commented in a personal letter: “The young ladies [in England] are not allowed to dance lest they dance to perdition.” An anti-nautch movement was launched in 1882 and the movements immediate concern was to stop the occurrence of nautch parties—a popular diversion for many British men. Later, beginning in the 1920s, a revival of the classical Indian performing arts revitalized naach. Browse our photography collection at asianart.emuseum.com. - @asianartmuseum on Instagram

A few kilometres away from the Golden Temple in Amritsar lies a little-known memorial with immense significance in India’s colonial history — the Saragarhi Memorial Gurudwara. The memorial pays homage to the unparalleled bravery of the 21 Sikh soldiers who fought against 10,000 Pashtun tribesmen on September 12, 1897, in what came to be known as the Battle of Saragarhi. Despite facing such overwhelming numbers, the warriors (part of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the Bengal Infantry) valiantly defended the Saragarhi outpost in the rugged hills of the North-West Frontier Province. They set an example that continues to inspire countless soldiers across the world. Yet books on Indian history have often shied away from discussing this incredible tale. In the late 1800s, tensions had heightened between Britain and Russia as the two nations battled over territories in central Asia. As such, threatened by both Russian forces and Afghan tribes, the frontier region between British India and Afghanistan had become a place of danger and constant unrest. On September 12, 1897, a small British outpost called Saragarhi, 40 miles away from the garrison town of Kohat (in what is now Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan), was attacked by 10,000 Orazkai-Afridi tribesmen. Located between the main forts of Lockhart and Gulistan, this outpost was of vital importance. Through it, heliographic signal communications (Morse code using flashes of sunlight) could be maintained between the two forts. Enemy tribesmen had surrounded Saragarhi with the intention of cutting communications and thus affecting troop movements of the British Indian Army. The 22 men inside were led by an experienced sergeant – Havildar Ishar Singh, who rallied his men to defend their positions. - @i_read_and_write_things on Instagram

Burnt husk! That was the first racist comment I faced in my life. My mother was in labour room. I was being born. A nurse said it. The first words which hit my ears were racist. The first ever opinion someone made about me was racist. Almost everyone in my family are pretty much dark. So I didnt face much trouble from my household. Being dark is somewhat normal here. My grandfather was one of the first people to come to our place, turning it into a village. The women of our family were beautiful, ebony dark and strong. Their lives and strength inspired me to evolve into who I am now. But the society was expecting something opposite . They moaned for me because my skin tone doesnt come with the treasure bag of privilege attached to it. Naturally I became the laughing stock, the centre of attention wherever I went. People made themselves feel better seeing me, bullying me, at least they are not dark, they are not ugly by default. Even in todays world, it is an individual responsibility of each dark girl out there to break the inferiority that society imposed upon her and believe she is beautiful. This is an active and energy consuming process. No wonder why were always exhausted. Aleena, originally from Pathanamthitta, is a model and singer. She is trained in classical opera, but wishes to produce post - rock music with Latin American folk tastes. She is keenly interested in fashion and aspires to be a businesswoman. She is unapologetic about her identity and is a part of a womens collective on issues regarding caste and colourism. She writes poetry and short stories both in English and Malayalam. Her favourite music bands are Mogwai, God Is An Astronaut and Iron maiden. - @black_ink_blots on Instagram

Maharaja Hari Singh GCSI GCIE GCVO (23 September 1895 – 26 April 1961) was the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Hari Singh was born on 23 September 1895 at the palace of Amar Mahal, Jammu, the only surviving son of Raja Amar Singh Jamwal, the brother of Maharaja Pratap Singh, then the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the Maharaja had no issue, Hari Singh was heir to the throne of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1903, Hari Singh served as a page of honour to Lord Curzon at the grand Delhi Durbar. At the age of thirteen, he was sent to Mayo College in Ajmer. A year later, in 1909, his father died, and the British took a keen interest in his education and appointed Major H. K. Brar as his guardian. After Mayo College, Hari Singh went to the British-run Imperial Cadet Corps at DehraDun for military training. Maharaja Pratap Singh appointed him as the commander-in-chief of the State Forces in 1915. The youthful escapades of Hari Singh included paying £300,000 for blackmail by a prostitute in Paris in 1921. That issue had resulted in a court case in London in 1924 during which the India Office tried to keep his name out of proceedings by arranging for him to be referred to as Mr A. Singh was known as a lavish spender of money. The funeral of his uncle and former ruler Pratap Singh is believed to have expended much gold and jewellery in the funeral pyre. Hari Singhs married life is dark. He married four times as his first three wives failed to give birth to his heirs. Each of them died within a few years of childlessness allowing Hari Singh to immediately take a new bride. His last wife, Tara Devi Sahiba of Kangra, had a son. Following the death of his uncle Pratap Singh in 1925, Hari Singh ascended the throne of Jammu and Kashmir. He made primary education compulsory in the state, introduced laws prohibiting child marriage, and opened places of worship to the low castes. The Seal of Maharaja Hari Singh had a Crown at the top. A katar or ceremonial dagger sat below the crown. Two soldiers held flags. An image of the sun was between them, that symbolised his Rajput lineage from Lord Surya, the Hindu Sun God. - @dogra_rajputana on Instagram

He whose spirit has been made one with God stands before man as the supreme flower of humanity. There man finds in truth what he is; for there the Āvih is revealed to him in the soul of man as the most perfect revelation for him of God; for there we see the union of the supreme will with our will, our love with the love everlasting. Therefore, in our country he who truly loves God receives such homage from men as would be considered almost sacrilegious in the west. We see in him Gods wish fulfilled, the most difficult of all obstacles to his revealment removed, and Gods own perfect joy fully blossoming in humanity. Through him we find the whole world of man overspread with a divine homeliness. His life, burning with Gods love, makes all our earthly love resplendent. All the intimate associations of our life, all its experience of pleasure and pain, group themselves around this display of the divine love, and from the drama that we witness in him. The touch of an infinite mystery passes over the trivial and the familiar, making it break out into ineffable music. The trees and the stars and the blue hills appear to us as symbols aching with a meaning which can never be uttered in words. We seem to watch the Master in the very act of creation of a new world when a mans soul draws her heavy curtain of self aside, when her veil is lifted and she is face to face with her eternal lover. - SADHANA, II, SOUL CONSCIOUSNESS - @rabindranath.tagore on Instagram
