A Florida woman who raised thousands of dollars for the families of three murdered men is accused of stealing the money and going on a spending spree, police said. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Amanda Brown, 32, created a GoFundMe page in the names of Brandon Rollins, Damion Tillman and Keven Springfield, a group of friends who were slain in July while on a fishing trip in Frostproof, a small town about 70 miles southwest of Orlando. On this particular morning we spotted these 13 Wild Dog puppies who were left alone. We passed 2 hyenas going towards the puppies about 300 metres earlier. Parents arrived in the nick of time and chased approaching hyenas who were now very close. There was relief all round. A 22-year-old woman was out tubing with her friends in Fort Lauderdale when a shark sunk its teeth into her right leg. The fish – thought to be a bull shark – also whacked her on the head with its fin before she had any idea what was even happening to her. She was rushed to shore where she was taken to the hospital and had a two-hour operation to repair the damage to her leg. I will never forget this day ever. I was heading into to Logan to work for US Airs VIP services, my inlaws were flying out that morning as well. I got the call to stay home. As we watched things unfold, we decided to leave the city, because they thought the LNG Tanker, a main gas source to Boston, was in the harbor and may be a target. I lived in the North End/Waterfront of Boston at the time, across from Logan. We would take our dog Dooley to Columbus Park every morning and at night, we would bring wine and drink with our neighbors and fellow dog owners. The most haunting part of the 2 weeks following this terrorist act on our country, was the absolute silence. No planes taking off, no traffic on the streets. I will never forget that silence, COMPLETE SILENCE. Photo by @eva.colomer The Lobi belong to an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Starting around 1770, many Lobi peoples migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into Côte dIvoire. The group consists of around 180,000 people.Lobiri is the name of the language spoken by the Lobi people. Lobi dwellings are characterized as large rectangular or polygonal compounds known as maison soukala. They are spaced well from each other and are composed of a single vast mud banco wall and a small entrance. An entrance to a Lobi house is a relatively recent development. At many houses, there is a ladder made from a large, Y-shaped tree trunk with notched steps, which lead up to the roof where inhabitants may access an interior granary and their own rooms below. Access to individual sleeping quarters is also available inside. Only the tyuordaarkuun (or head of the household; there is no chief in Lobi society) can give permission to enter the house. The roof is broad and flat and forms a terrace which provides a lookout point but can also be used for sleeping in the dry season. Domestic animals have their own space, and water is gathered from a well or the river. The rooms inside a Lobi house are very dark, and the size varies in relation to function. Each wife has a room for herself and her children where meals are prepared. Large earthenware jars used to hold water or other personal belongings are often stacked up against the kitchen walls and are a testament to the owners economic status. One of the most genuine smiles youll ever see from me. This hike remains to be one of the hardest and most gruelling Ive ever completed. It was a 12 hour round hike in thigh deep mud, through rough jungle terrain and up a steep incline. I can still remember feeling the shoes rubbing against the blisters on my feet and the pure exhaustion from such a difficult hike in 38 degree heat! This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. (You can watch it on SureWeCan’s FB page) Simmons also has a reply for those that claim canners steal revenue from the city: “Portraying us as stealing from the city is ludicrous. It’s a joke, it’s a further demonization of people who are already down.” . Last year I wrote a story for NYT about how street vendors were also fighting the city for dignity in their profession, yet another flexible, low-barrier-to-entry business available to the most vulnerable people in society. One woman told me that as long as she could vend, she knew she could put money in her pocket. She didn’t have to wait for somebody to hire her, a black woman, an immigrant from Africa with an accent.
