Meet our 2020–2021 Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists! Over the next 3 Thursdays, well be featuring the members of this seasons artist residency program. Luka Kawabata, Baritone Vancouver baritone Luka Kawabata holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the University of British Columbia. Recent credits include the title role in Don Giovanni, Lieutenant Audebert in Silent Night, Dappertutto and Dr. Miracle in Les Contes d’Hoffmann as well as Tadeusz in the Canadian premiere of Pasażerka with the UBC Opera Ensemble. He has performed roles in the Westben Arts Festival’s La Traviata and the European Music Academy’s La Bohème and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Luka has been featured in concert performances including St. John’s Passion and as Hobson in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Peter Grimes. Last season, Luka understudied the role of Owl in Vancouver Opera In Schools’ production of The Flight of the Hummingbird. He has studied with Peter Barcza and worked with prominent names including Carol Isaac, David Agler, Bramwell Tovey, Russell Braun, Eric Owens, and Luca Pisaroni. Theres a tendency to assume that successful, confident people never have any doubts - that they are decisive about every choice, never have regrets, and always know what to do. This confidence we see in those people often only highlights our own fears & lacks. The fact is, everyone, even the strongest leaders, second-guesses themselves. Self-doubt is a very human response to all the challenges life throws your way. Even still, it doesn’t have to stop you from overcoming obstacles and reaching your goals. I personally have a few ways to avoid these self-judgment days. Heres what works for me: 👉 Being devoted to my goals. I really know my goals, I live for my goals, even if waken up in the middle of the night I would be able to tell you my WHYs. Knowing why the heck I choose this rocky road in life makes me understand that Im in the process of growth. Its ok not to know everything & lack certain skills while youre growing, but as long as Im moving forward, I feel at peace with myself. 👉 Knowing where Ive come from. Whenever I feel like Im failing myself, I look back to where Ive started. This usually helps me understand how much Ive actually grown in the least years. 👉 Loving myself. This is a core, my friend. I rarely doubt myself when I have time to sleep well & eat well. When Im in peace with my partner. When I get to do the things I love doing. When I actually focus on prioritizing & listening to what I currently need. What about you? Do you often doubt yourself? Lembre-se que na grande maioria das vezes o preconceito vem de dentro de nós e é transferido para o outro. Você escolhe como interpretar um ato preconceituoso: você pode se vitimizar e nutrir o preconceito ou você pode ter pena do preconceituoso e usar esta atitude para te inspirar e mostrar para o mundo que você pode mais que qualquer modelo tradicional. Ouvi minha vida toda que cirurgia não era profissão de mulher, que eu era pobre e não podia ser médica. Mas eu sempre acreditei verdadeiramente que se eu estudasse e passasse numa universidade federal seria possível. E foi possível. Que ser mulher não me tornava incapaz de ser lógica e racional e que eu iria sim ser uma excelente cirurgiã, poderia me vitimizar, mudar de opção... é sempre o caminho mais fácil e trivial. Mas hoje eu venho aqui para dizer a todos vocês que a única pessoa que importa sobre qualquer atitude que você toma, é você mesmo. Você deve ser o seu juiz: se você está feliz e não está causando mal a ninguém, segue em frente. Não fica querendo descobrir o que os outros estão pensando de você e das suas atitudes, tenha orgulho de si mesmo, você transfere para o outro o sentimento próprio. Não se desculpe por ser você!!! Ame-se. Ame a sua vida. Ame as suas escolhas. You are “too young” to make other people and society comfortable with you revealing your silver hair with confidence because of the conditioning we’ve experienced about what gray hair means. That doesn’t make it true. Your hair color doesn’t define your age, youthfulness or vitality. You’re not too young. And the quicker we realize that, the quicker that barrier gets broken down. Tips for new surgery PAs/NPs Okay…first off...it’s tough! It’s hard! You will be studying a lot and feeing like info overloaded at first...this is normal! 1️⃣Resources: anatomy book of course and I like a surgery manual so you can really study and understand the cases. The more you know about the surgery, the better first assistant you can be. Try to use CME $ on these books because they can get pricey. If you don’t have the funds maybe you can borrow a book from a colleague or surgeon to start, this shows you are really motivated to improve your knowledge base and skills.👍 (my fav books linked in bio) 2️⃣Take notes on your surgeon preferences. PAs certainly have autonomy for many things when managing patients but if the surgeon feels strongly about certain things...ya do it! Meet with them and go over all this stuff, it will help to have it on hand (Examples: fav meds, special instructions, imaging, etc..) 3️⃣Rounds: Get there early, pre-round and plan what you would do. If you aren’t there yet with ordering try to have everything summarized on a piece of paper ready to present and ask them specific questions on management.. (examples: would you start antibiotics for this? CT scan? I think they can be discharged today..any issues with that? etc..) 4️⃣Read operative notes! You can learn so much from these, even after you scrub the case. 5️⃣Be ready to be uncomfortable in some situations, writing scripts for the first time, making decisions when your attending isn’t around to ask, suturing alone in the OR 😉. Always own up and learn from your mistakes! 6️⃣Brush up on those surgical skills! Keep working on hand ties, clamping, cutting, and suturing outside of the OR. Bring a clamp home also to sit and practice. Work on becoming more ambidextrous in the OR, use your non-dominant hand more with everyday activities like eating, brushing teeth, using computer mouse, etc.. Don’t forget more fine motor like writing too. I was very right handed when I started..it get easier with time! A few years ago, I joined the @delta family. I’ve worked at BNA, SEA and AUS, making so many friends along the way. I remember specific experiences with our passengers that I’ll always cherish. Oh, and of course the incredible world of travel. Ive been following Marielle (49) on Instagram almost since the start of the project. She is one of Hollands older models that you regularly encounter in magazines and advertising campaigns. Until recently, she was still on my wishlist, but a few weeks ago, she finally stood in front of my lens. As a team we created the fashion story 50 shades of grey. Today also a small part of the interview with her because of course I wanted to know more about this beautiful lady’s life and view on aging. Tell Us About Yourself? M: “My name is Marielle, friends call me Mar. I am a 1.80m tall Dutchie, living in the centre of Amsterdam with my DJ husband Alex (64) our son Marin (18), daughter Alana (16) and our 2 British Shorthair cats Teddy and Boeffie (both 3). I have been working as a model since I was scouted in Paradiso when I was 18 years but as I didn’t like the modeling industry at all in the beginning (I was too insecure I guess), I decided to combine modeling with a part time job as a flight attendant for a Dutch commercial airline and later for the Royal Dutch Air-force. Really cool because we had amazing missions to special places and could refuel F16’s in the air with our DC10 and I had a great time, but it was hard to combine with motherhood so I quit flying for the Royal Dutch Airforce when I got pregnant. Nowadays I like to combine my blooming grey haired modeling career with hosting guests in our lovely B&B at our attic in Amsterdam.” What would you say is the strangest thing about becoming older? Поговорим о силе воли и о тех, кто вдохновляет двигаться вперёд. В недавнем Московском марафоне @moscowmarathon принимали участие ребята из фонда «Жизнь в движении» @fond_zhiznvdvizhenii. Они - доказательство того, что физические ограничения не преграда к тому, чтобы, к примеру, взбираться на скалы или участвовать в забегах. Вот подопечная фонда Олеся Ефимова финишировала на дистанции 10 км и получила свою заслуженную медаль! Изначальный план был - просто принять участие и пройти 200 метров. А ещё Олеся @simadaykun - начинающий художник, основные темы ее работ посвящены Второй мировой войне. И отдельно хочу рассказать о Саше Скулыбердине @skulsan.20, который достоин номинации «Герой Московского марафона». Он был заявлен на 10 км, пропустил поворот и случайно попал на полный круг на дистанции 42,2 км! Только представьте! Саша не сдался и на спортивной коляске финишировал с отличным результатом!
