“What does a DP do?”)) AFTER/BEFORE, part 2. Thanks so much for the kind words on the previous post, glad people finding it helpful to see a bit of process! Here’s another selection of projects I’ve shot directed by a whole mix of good people. 1st setup is from the Under Armour commercial by @rafflington. A 12-light Dino (medium lenses) from the side (to cover quite a lot of ground), overhead sky panel + blacking out all the unwanted daylight for dramatic effect. Gaffer: @dompalgan. 2nd is from the short Jar of Nuts by @lensman88 telling a dark funny story of a suicidal man who hasn’t solved his mum issues. The days were long. I don’t really remember if this was night for day now. The shot was lit through the windows left side of frame. Gaffer: Polivios Simeonides 3: Hovis bread commercial by @byronquandary. This was a multitude of small and big sources seeing it’s a food commercial. This is actually a sharper light than usually allowed to be used on food — but it’s morning, and harsh morning sunlight is permitted. Gaffer: Aldo Camilleri. 4th is from a music video by @anna_radchenko, a mixed daylight/party situation. Big props to the @lucycooperlucy’s art dpt for making it so tastefully busy! That golden curtain was a great choice for the “sad party” setup)) A bit of sad gold. The shot was mainly lit by the practical on the table + a small unit on the left for the talent. Gaffer: @aedyvean. 5th is from the recently shared watch/clothing commercial by @hingstonstudio, gaffer: Felice Guzzi. I’ve learned that lighting on the yacht is pure fun, especially if the captain allows you to rotate the above-mentioned yacht any direction you want. Kinda like early 20th century film studios that were built to rotate when chasing the sun! #beforeafterlighting - @edgardubrovskiy on Instagram

Pretty epic dive into a cenote that’s filled with a layer of hydrogen sulfide at depth 25 meters. Once you pass through the layer, there’s 40 more meters down of darkness (as the sun light doesn’t pass through the gas river). When you pass through the Layer on the way up , it feels like you are being reborn into the light ! One of the most insane looking dives I did up to date !! ART AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE Before the lockdown I approached my dear friend @franticbornemisza, a passionate and devoted warrior against climate change, telling her that I wanted to something useful “with my summer”. My original idea was to volunteer at a sanctuary for orangutans in South East Asia during July and August… “I want to help make I difference”, I remember telling her. But then COVID19 came along and everything changed. During the lockdown, restless Francesca had an epiphany and she invited me to collaborate on her newest venture: #st_age. st_age [short for “the streaming age”] is a digital platform that, in staying true to the core values of TBA21, the foundation Francesca established 20 years ago in Vienna, commissions new artworks. Only this time, instead of big installations, the works are conceived to fit your screen. These are artworks that make you think. As a response to the pandemic and the critical situation so many artists see themselves now, Francesca decided to create st_age, a platform that presents newly commissioned digital works by artists who deal with some of the most pressing issues of our times. Framed within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, each work is unfolded way beyond its artistic context and, by doing so, st_age will be sharing a light on critical situations that humanity needs to address with the same urgency we are currently dealing with the virus. I am very proud of what this fantastic team, lead by Francesca and Soledad Gutiérrrez, has put together. I want to thank them for allowing me to be a part of this. And, yes, I am particularly proud of the series of podcasts we are developing in collaboration with brilliant journalists. The first one goes live tomorrow at 8am.
