Team — this hits close to home with me. A1C Elizabeth Jacobson wasn’t just the first Security Forces Airman to die during Operation Iraqi Freedom, she was also the first woman in the Air Force to be killed in that conflict, and she was 21 years old. Liz was a well known and loved member of Team Goodfellow. A photo of her was beautifully framed by my wingman, Chief Thomas Good, and hung proudly in the Command Chief Office in the 17th Training Wing, where it still hangs today. I also framed her photo in my office at the pentagon...as a daily reminder of “why” I serve and to “whom” I serve. Out there. Up and exposed. Hot and miserable. The expectation I had was of an unceremonious death on the hot metal platform and transmission under my feet. The waves of humanity crashing around us in the streets as we carved through in overworked and overburdened heaps of makeshift metal and oil. The smell of dirt, sewage, and exhaust heavy around everything. So heavy it clung to your skin and seeped into your clothes. Just up and out there. Showing aggression at every turn to keep them back and keep them safe. Keep us safe. Angry yelling and even angrier warning shots. Hard braking and bruised ribs. Like surfing in a rock tumbler. It always took a minute to feel in synch with the truck. The grip of your boots meeting the grip of the platform. And when the truck is wheezing it’s way up to max speed under all that weight, a little respite of hot air rushing by almost feels cool. There’s danger up there. There’s worry. LTG Williams is a distinguished Military Graduate of the Hampton Institute ROTC Program and was commissioned in the Army Quartermaster Corps in 1983. Before retiring, LTG Darrel K. Williams served as the Director of the Defense Logistics Agency with headquarters in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. LTG Williams is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC), the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) and a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College (NWC). He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia and Master’s degrees in Military Arts and Sciences, National Security and Strategic Studies, and Business Management (Logistics). LTG Williams has served on several deployments which include Kosovo, Kuwait and Iraq. He is highly decorated and earned many awards during his career. These awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Parachute Rigger Badge and Army Staff Identification Badge. LTG Williams has been a role model to many during his career. He has visited the Pirate Battalion on many occasion as a guest speak for panels and served as a mentor to cadets throughout the program. His time in service is not just appreciated within the United States Army, but also amongst many individuals in the Pirate Battalion. We thank you LTG Williams on the time you have spent with the Pirate Battalion and your remarkable leadership that has been noticed by the masses within the United States Army. Un constructor de sueños de marca mayor El niño Dairo Jair Rosero Leyton, de 10 años, hijo de una familia campesina de la vereda La Cafelina, en El Tambo (Nariño), se encontraba gravemente enfermo por cuenta de una afección denominada púrpura fulminante, que afecta tanto sus extremidades superiores como inferiores. Buscando ayuda, los humildes padres supieron de un policía que en Santander auxiliaba a niños con discapacidad. Se trataba del mayor Rubén Darío Berrío Buitrago, creador de la campaña ‘Construyendo Sueños’, con la cual ganó el premio de la Noche de la Excelencia Policial 2017 en la categoría Policía más Humana y fue segundo a nivel nacional en todas las categorías. Tras conocer el drama de Dairo, el mayor emprendió una colecta para conseguirle unas prótesis, completando de su propio bolsillo para adquirirlas. Desde entonces, el pequeño puede realizar actividades cotidianas que antes le resultaban imposibles. A otros dos niños santandereanos, Carlitos y Santiago, con malformación congénita en sus extremidades superiores, también les cambió la vida con ayuda similar. Envió a Carlitos, de 7 años, a Bogotá y con el apoyo de ganaderos logró que le hicieran una prótesis como la de su personaje favorito: Iron Man. Y el mismo día en que Carlitos lloraba de felicidad por tan preciado regalo, le preguntaron al mayor si era posible hacer lo mismo con Santiago, de 5 años. Sin dudarlo, golpeó las puertas de la empresa privada y le consiguió la prótesis. Su compromiso con la comunidad lo ha llevado incluso a adquirir tres mulares para que se transporten niños del colegio de la vereda Aguas Claras; a amoblarle la casa a una familia de escasos recursos e incluso a crear el primer Comedog del municipio de Cimitarra, para alimentar a perros y gatos abandonados en las calles. El mayor, cuya labor la apoyan hasta niños que le ofrecen sus alcancías, nació el 14 de junio de 1982 en Chinchiná (Caldas). Está casado con la señora Lina Marcela Pascuas y es padre de Laura Alejandra, María José y Rubén Darío. En sus casi 19 años de servicio institucional ha sido desde comandante de CAI en Bogotá hasta efectivo de la Fuerza Disponible, pasando por los Escuadrones Móviles. - @mindefensaco on Instagram

This past Saturday, 97-year-old Private First Class Arthur Lee Brodin, a Castle Rock resident, was honored for his service to our country during World War II. The ceremony started with a WW II-era Jeep escort from his home to the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park. The ceremony was hosted by Congressmen Ken Buck and remarks were also given by Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray. At the ceremony, PFC Brodin was presented seven medals and awards for his service from 1943 to 1946. His service included surviving a glider crash landing on D-Day, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and assisting a doctor perform an emergency surgery on another soldier while en route to the U.S. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Thank you for your service, PFC Brodin! We are honored to have you as part of our Castle Rock community. - @crgov on Instagram

The “Silver Dollar Salute” is a tradition in which a new officer must buy his first salute as he has not yet by the nature of his deed alone earned it. The coin should represent the gratitude for the mentorship and lessons imparted by the Non-Commissioned Officer on his Ensign before he sends him out into the world to embark in the brotherhood and profession of arms. I am so grateful and blessed for the mentorship and guidance I have received from this man. I’ve never had to look up to superheroes because I lived with one. He took me in as one of his own and never treated me as anything less than blood. I watched him put his cape on and lead our family everyday. He made tough days look like easy days. I didn’t have to hesitate when considering my first salute. One day when I have children, I hope they will see in me what I see in you. I thank God for you and I see God in you. By July 1944 Allied Forces have crossed the Arno River and began the advance on Florence. On the night of 30/31st July 1944, the 22nd Battalion assaulted the village of La Romola, Italy defended by elements of the 15th Grenadier Regiment and a few Tigers of the 3rd Bat., Panzer –Abteilung 508, one of which was knocked out, or broke down, during the battle. To reach its objective, a line cutting the ridge just beyond La Romola, 4 Brigade faced the formidable task of crossing the steep-sided valley of the Sugana stream, into which the enemy had observation and could direct the fire of his artillery, tanks, self-propelled guns, mortars and machine guns from the front and both flanks. The plan for the attack, which was to start at 1 a.m. on 31 July, was that 22 Battalion was to advance under a series of timed artillery concentrations fired by 4 and 6 Field Regiments and 70 and 75 Medium Regiments, and was to have the support of C Squadron of 20 Regiment, 31 Anti-Tank Battery (minus all except one section of its M10s and one troop of its six-pounders, but with a troop of 17-pounders from 34 Battery), 3 MG Company (whose 12 Vickers were to ‘thicken’2 the artillery barrage) and detachments of 6 Field Company. The attack was to be made by 1 Company on the right, 3 on the left and 2 in close support, each with a troop of tanks and a party of sappers. Reconnaissance the previous night below La Romola had found the stream and the sunken lateral road obstacles for tanks, but just before the attack began a report was received that the ‘river crossing was OK’ for tanks. Patrols had been sent out in daylight and at night to investigate reports from civilians that the enemy had evacuated La Romola. These reports were proved false, at the cost of casualties to both patrols. The enemy, brought to the alert by 5 Brigades attack on the flank, filled the Sugana valley with defensive fire. ‘The noise, dust and smoke was terrific and hardly seemed to increase when our own barrage opened up since it had already about reached the ultimate limit.’ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #ww2documents #secondworldwar - @ww2documents on Instagram

The StuG: A new concept in warfare ___ “One of only a handful of the brand new StuG III to see service in the West, this dusty StuG III Ausf. A shows the scars of combat on its frontal armour. By the size of the holes, possibly an anti-tank rifle. Location unknown, May/June 1940. ___ In May of 1940, during Operation ‘Fall Gelb’, a new concept made his debut on the battlefield: The Sturmartillerie (Assault Artillery). The Germans called it the Sturmgeschütz (literally Assault Gun), or StuG for shorts. In its early versions it was designed specifically to help infantry deal with hard points such as bunkers, mg nests and fortified positions. Its low silhouette, 50 mm of frontal armor, and 75mm low velocity gun packing HE rounds made it a formidable opponent against any infantry position. ___ The first StuG to enter combat belonged to 16.Sturmbatterie, assigned to the ‘Großdeutschland’ Infanterie-Regiment. On the 10th of May, at the French village of Villers, 20 miles west from Luxembourg, II.Batallion found the place occupied by French cavalry. The French stood their ground and a heated firefight followed. In the meantime, I.Batallion, with the Sturmbatterie attached, arrived at the scene. The call was heard for the first time: ‘Sturmbatterie to the front!’ ___ The action, partially transcribed: ‘The third platoon dashed forward; its leader, Lt. Franz standing erect in the turret of his command vehicle, followed closely by StuG Nr.5 and 6. The platoon found no resistance until arriving at the center of town where it received heavy mg fire. The platoon leader answered this fire with his MP (machine-pistol).
