Watching whales all day everyday is what we do but sometimes we forget that for most people, seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat is a dream. Given the travel limitations currently in place and considering that there are many people who live with varying physical, intellectual, sensory and learning disabilities, going whale watching can be farther out of reach. Yesterday we shared a virtual whale watch with over 40 camp participants through @eastersealsbcy - the honest interest and elation on the participants’ faces was a warm reminder for us that sharing the wonder of the West Coast with guests (whether in person or virtually) is a special job to have. The launching of a new 74-gunned 3rd rate takes place on November 6th of 1793 for the Royal Navy, she Minotaur! The ship of the line weighs in at 1,723 tons (Builder’s Old Measurement), has a length of 172 ft, has twenty-eight 32 lb on the gundeck, twenty-eight 18 lb on the upper gundeck, and eighteen 9 lb on the quarterdeck and forecastle. Minotaur, as with the rest of the Courageux class, is larger than the average 74-gunner in the Royal Navy. This being due to Courageux herself a French built ship (Images 2-3), the design of which copied for a class of sisters built by the opposing countries. Minotaur’s first success in service during the Napoleonic Wars is the capturing of the Walsingham Packet on September 26th of 1795, which itself was captured thirteen days earlier by a French corvette. Later on in life the 3rd rate, under command of Thomas Louis, sails out with Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson (his flagship Vanguard) in the Mediterranean during July of 1798. This force goes around chasing ghosts in the Mediterranean for some time as there was a French invasion force known to be around, but narrowly misses the French. Come August 1st and HMS Zealous locates the French Fleet anchored in Aboukir Bay. Minotaur takes station astern of Vanguard and moves into position for a close engagement shortly after 6:00 PM. After getting stuck in with the fight, along with HMS Defence, Captain Louis focuses Minotaur’s cannon fire at the 74-gunned Aquilon captained by Antoine Rene Thevenard. Shots are exchanged for a few hours with a brief respite after the French flagship L’Orient blew up. Thevenard manages to turn his ship for broadside shots on Vanguard which does deal several successive blows to the British flagship, but in doing so is bow on to Minotaur’s broadside. At 9:25 PM Aquilon is devastated by a salvo that dismasts her and sees the French ship’s surrender shortly thereafter. Minotaur then goes south to engage Franklin. The Covid19 crisis could have and should have shut us down. Thanks to our incredible community, we forged on, but not with some massive changes. Both personally, and with my business. Our menu is now a greatest hits collection from the past 6 years. Our service is all counter service now, with a selection of amazing local beers, wines, and ciders. . . . Community is even more of a focus now...when I first opened The Table, it was to focus more on being able to spend time with my young daughter, to leave the chef life behind... and I am so grateful to have had the last 6 years as a focused father. But, during the last 6 years, my eyes have been opened to various needs in our community. So, now we have two small, but I hope impactful programs in place. First. SAUCE FOR A CAUSE Simply put its a thing. For every additional sauce added to a meal, we have changed $0.50. All of that money is donated to local charities and organizations. Last year, we donated just over $1700. Secondly, the continuation of PAY-IT-FORWARD program. Simply put, for any meal you buy you can add on a meal for ANY PERSON who needs a meal for $8.00. We will have an Pay it forward menu of soups, fish and chips, and taco available for any person who needs a meal. We started this program for health care workers during the beginning stages of Covid19...we were able to help provide 100s of meals for hard working health care workers, as the need has declined we now feel it is time to change focus to anyone who needs a meal. How Carthage lost the 1st War with Roma - Part 1 The First Punic War (264 to 241 BC) was the first of three wars fought between ancient Carthage and the Roma Republic, the two great powers of the Western Mediterranean. In the longest continuous conflict and greatest naval war of antiquity, the two powers struggled for 23 years for supremacy, primarily on the Mediterranean island of Sicily and its surrounding waters and islands, but also in North Africa and even in the South of Italy. The war began in 264 BC when the Romans answered to a request of help by the Marmetines who were a group of mercenaries who had captured the city of Messana by treachery and raided many cities in Sicily after that. Defeated by Hiero II (a tyrant of Syracuse) at the Longanus River and in a dire situation, they called for help from a nearby fleet from Carthage, which established a garrison in Messana. Seing this, the Syracuse forces retreated, not wishing to confront the Carthaginians. Uncomfortable under the Carthaginian protection, the Marmetines appealed to Rome to be allowed into the protection of the Roman people. At first, the Romans did not wish to come to the aid of soldiers who had unjustly stolen a city from its rightful owners but the prospect of enrichment from the gains of war and stopping Carthaginian expansion over Sicily that could eventually be a threath to the South of Italy changed their minds and they accepted an alliance with the Marmetines. Ironically, Roma had recently punished a Rhegion garrison composed of soldiers with similar origin as the Marmetines that had expelled the original Rhegion citizens. In response, Syracuse allied itself with Carthage. With Rome and Carthage brought into conflict, the Syracuse/Marmetine conflict quickly escalated into the First Punic War. Christmas came early I’ve bern waiting for this moment since 6 years - and now they’re here! My preciousssss big Stockinger vats. Ive always wanted to make wine in big wooden vats, since I don’t want too much oaky taste nor too much air that the regular size barrels give you. Not just in any big vats though; I wanted the Stockinger ones! I think they’re the best, as I kept seeing them in the wineries of my friends and idols in Austria, France, Italy - the people who I consider on top of their game. All these years, I didn’t have the money nor the space for the vats. Nevertheless, I kept writing to Mr. Stockinger year after year after year, if he’d please please be so kind to make me at least one vat, please please? But he was a strict Santa and it never happened. (Tbh, even if it did, it might not have been the right time for me yet.) But, this spring, at the beginning of all this covid craze, a lightbulb popped up above my head and I wrote to Mr. Stockinger, yet again. Yes, there is a free capacity for 6000 liters. And yes, we can reserve 6000 liters more each year. Wow. I think I made a little celebratory dance back then. You know what they say, crisis is just an opportunity in disguise… So now they’re here, my preciousssss little big Stockies. We might not be able to afford windows for the house we’re just building but hey, totally worth it. Instead, this winter we’ll be warmed by the feeling of having the Stockinger beauties in my cellar - I’m sure my wife will love that 😄 A bit more of the unboxing pics for you fellpw geeks in my Stories. I recently had the pleasure of making this beautiful double sided board for @wwe wrestler @baroncorbinwwe . This board was ordered as a gift and highlights the logo for his page @ignorant_gentleman . This is a walnut end grain board with a hardwood inlayed logo. I used maple for the white, wenge for the black, cherry for the orange and then for the knives we used zebra wood to make it look sort of look like Damascus steel. We have become meticulous about the process since we started. It’s a process that could be automated but we have preferred to keep our relationship with our crop more personal. As Fall approaches and winter grows near husbandry will stop our younger crops will be put to bed on the ocean floor and the winter crop will be relocated to an area that never freezes, regardless of the frigid winter temperatures. My dad made many great deals over the years. Bought and sold more than 100 tugboats in his lifetime. He loved the Judy Moran class tugboat more than anything. She was a classic built beauty, but also some of the most capable & versatile tugboats working at the time. When the opportunity came to purchase her, we knew we could not let this pass by. Day 3 of the #OncerChallenge by @sprinkledbymagic and @bound.and.rebound is We Want More! There are so many characters that deserved more screen time. I don’t want to pick favorites so instead I’m putting a different spin on this challenge. The Jolly Roger: Yes, I’m classifying a ship as a character! It’s totally a badass vessel and I remember being so excited every time the Lady Washington would show up in Steveston for filming. She deserved more screen time! I would have always liked to see Killian teach Emma how to sail. I got to board the Lady Washington while in Monterey, CA and just had to put on the red jacket for some photos.
