| Le collectionneur et marchand d’art Daniel Cordier, également connu pour avoir été le secrétaire de Jean Moulin durant la guerre, fête aujourd’hui ses 100 ans. Grand admirateur de Hans Hartung, il prit la plume dans la revue XXe siècle pour défendre l’artiste – louant sa « peinture monumentale, apothéose de ses recherches » – lorsque ce dernier subissait les feux de la critique américaine lors son exposition au Metropolitan Museum (1975-1976). C’est également un autre Hartung, celui de l’immédiat après-guerre, qu’il contribua à diffuser auprès des publics : c’est via sa donation au Musée National d’Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou en 1989 que l’institution parisienne se trouve aujourd’hui dotée de remarquables œuvres sur papier de 1947. NERAM would receive $80,000 per annum for the next four years to support its day-to-day operations. This is wonderful and timely news for NERAM and Armidale, especially with the difficult year so far for the arts. Like many local cultural facilities, NERAM closed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, placing considerable financial pressure on the organisation which relies on donations from visiting patrons. This funding gives NERAM the breathing room it needs to deliver its dynamic cultural program that includes some 30 exhibitions, art classes, workshops, Creative Learning and NERAM Nights events. L’artista descrive questo momento della sua evoluzione artistica in una lettera allo scrittore Domenico Tumiati, nel 1898: «Mi ritirai ed entrai fra i colli ed i laghi della bella Brianza, persuaso che l’arte del dipingere non poteva essere limitata al colore, per il colore in sé stesso, ma che esso poteva essere, sapientemente adoperato, una fonte espressiva di sensazioni d’amore, di dolore e di piacere. Meeting De Rimini⠀ ⠀ El Encuentro por la amistad entre los pueblos (Meeting per lamicizia fra i popoli en italiano ) es un festival católico de múltiples eventos que se celebra todos los años en Rimini , Italia , en una semana a fines de agosto. La primera edición tuvo lugar en 1980.⠀ ⠀ El encuentro está organizado, desde 2008, por el Encuentro de la Fundación para la Amistad entre los Pueblos. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV, and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period. He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. These flowers were picked for you by Paula Modersohn-Becker! – The present work, Self-Portrait with Two Flowers in Her Raised Left Hand (1876–1907) is one of her last paintings. Her huge eyes and serene gaze recall the Egyptian mummy portraits from the Roman period that she had seen at the Louvre. Around the time that she was working on this picture, her husband, the painter Otto Modersohn, gave her a book on Egyptian portrait heads that she described as “remarkable and full of character.” She could never have imagined the tragic irony that would occur when selecting a funeral prototype for her self-portrait. Here, Modersohn-Becker focuses on her face and upper body, her left hand offering two flowers, their rosy hues echoing her blushing cheeks. With her right hand, she cradles her belly protectively, an acknowledgment of her pregnancy. Her only child, Mathilde, was born after more than two days of difficult labor. Just a few weeks later, Modersohn-Becker died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism, a complication from childbirth caused by remaining in bed for too long. Happy birthday to French artist Edgar Degas, who was born on this day in 1834. At the last Impressionist show in 1886, the 52-year-old Edgar Degas exhibited six nudes from a series of pastels on paper depicting women at their toilette. One of the things that I appreciate about the works from this period are the fact that the women are wholly absorbed in their bathing rituals, presented with a tone of matter-of-fact beauty rather than a lewd voyeurism. Getting on my soap box... I teach designers how to create a 10k+ service with brand strategy. My group coaching program teaches them how to sell, market and position it. And the one thing that always, without fail makes me sick to my stomach: is when I see how genuinely SCARED my students get when the idea of charging 10k is simply proposed to them. How much they don’t believe that’s possible, how unheard of it is to charge that much. They’re scared they won’t be able to pay basic bills, feed their families because they think no one will pay them if they raise their rates that much. They’ll scare everybody off. Here’s the thing though.. 10k is the STARTING place for a comfortable wage. Creatives I know you know, this but tens and sometimes thousands of hours knowledge and programs go into each of your projects and you solve big problems! Not including all the money and time you spend to create thousands of dollars and happiness for your own clients. You deserve to be comfortable when talking about money. This is why I talk about money so freaking much. Charging 10k should not be taboo and unthinkable!! Paying yourself should not feel crazy!! I know not everybody can afford 10k and above to get themselves branded but that’s why I love templates, strategy sessions by themselves, DIY solutions, etc until you CAN afford that. But creatives, you should not be pouring your individual time into a project for anything less. Solve a big problem and charge for it. Be confident in it. Before we get into this week’s astrology, I would like to share with you what may be a helpful insight from the Chinese Classic The Secret of the Golden Flower (read Cleary’s version not Wilhelm). Consider all the effort it took to be you. All the physical growing you had to do. All the education. All the people who contributed to everything from the food you ate to the clothes you wear. You are an immensely complex wonder of cooperating individualities. You have memory, a mind, and emotions. You have dreams. You’re a veritable miracle in miniature. And yet, especially during bad times, we feel as if we are trapped in a nightmarish contrivance in a cold impersonal world where nothing escapes the grinder. Back to the Secret of the Golden Flower. When a soul incarnates, the lower soul, the energy of the soul that creates and dwells with the body, falls in love with death. We play games where we kill and get killed. We watch movies featuring spectacularly gory scenes. We trophy hunt. We obsess on death statistics and morbidly dwell on apprehensive imagination. Or we consume ourselves with anger and hatred for those we disagree with, blaming them for the entire mess that it takes all of us to create, fantasizing a self righteous mayhem. This happens because the lower soul finds the body claustrophobic and disconcerting. The other side of the miracle that is the body is its physical limitations and the constant threat of succumbing to illness or accident, amplified by all media daily because it’s a great way to sell soap. If you are living in dread of your body and society, of what’s going to happen next. If you are dwelling on losses, depression, pessimism, and anger. If you feel life is only cruel, that you are powerless. If you wonder what sort of cruel world subjects ephemeral beings to such mindless suffering, you are centered in the lower soul. You are also flushing your body with chemicals and hormones that become toxic when chronic. On this day on June 13, 1774, the Rhode Island legislature passed a law banning the importation of slaves into the colony, becoming the first of Britain’s North American colonies to do so. This law was one of the first anti-slavery laws in the United States. Before this, there were 4 different ports of entry of enslaved Africans in the transatlantic trade located in Rhode Island. However, leading merchants, including John Brown and George DeWolf, continued to engage in the slave trade. One of the leading figures in Rhode Island behind abolitionism was Moses Brown, John Brown’s brother. The Brown family owed much of their wealth to their mercantile success in the slave trade in Rhode Island. Becoming deeply disturbed by the plight of the slaves in America, in 1774 he converted from Baptist to Quaker, and threw himself upon the abolitionist cause. In 1787, he helped pass a statute forbidding anyone to outfit slave voyages in Rhode Island ports. In 1789, Brown helped found the Providence Society for Abolishing the Slave Trade to help enforce the anti-slave trade legislation. Moses Brown’s house was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Providence was on route from New Bedford, where escaping slaves arrived by ship, to Fall River and then Rhode Island. Moses taught his son, Obadiah, to actively oppose slavery and he did just that, sponsoring free blacks to help them find employment, helped with their finances, and backed them up in legal disputes. Rhode Island eventually abolished all slavery and emancipated all slaves in 1843, with the adoption of the new state constitution. Pictures: 1. Moses Brown 2. Most of my self-portraits are not autobiographical. Although it is clearly myself that I paint (they wouldn ’t be called self-portraits otherwise) I actually impersonate a character, I play a role: the role of a painter trying to paint himself under very awkward circumstances. Thats why in those paintings, the hand that holds the brush -the depiction of the act of painting- is crucial, maybe even more important than the face. Of course, since I really am a painter who paints himself, things get tangled up: where does the autobiography end and where does the role begin? I guess it’ s like when in a movie an actor is playing an actor; or, even more so, when an actor is impersonating himself. “When Van Gogh was a young man in his early twenties, he was in London studying to be a clergyman. He had no thought of being an artist at all. he sat in his cheap little room writing a letter to his younger brother in Holland, whom he loved very much. When I read this letter of Van Gogh’s it comforted me very much and seemed to throw a clear light on the whole road of Art. Before, I thought that to produce a work of painting or literature, you scowled and thought long and ponderously and weighed everything solemnly and learned everything that all artists had ever done aforetime, and what their influences and schools were, and you were extremely careful about *design* and *balance* and getting *interesting planes* into your painting, and avoided, with the most astringent severity, showing the faintest *academical* tendency, and were strictly modern. And so on and so on. But the moment I read Van Gogh’s letter I knew what art was, and the creative impulse. It is a feeling of love and enthusiasm for something, and in a direct, simple, passionate and true way, you try to show this beauty in things to others, by drawing it. Raw, poignant and profoundly honest, @davidkassan’s work aesthetically captures humanity in its true form. More than simply replicating his subjects Kassan seeks to understand them. He seeks to capture the essence of those he paints, imbuing them with their own voice. They communicate with the viewer interpersonally and we see them through our own eyes. Our gaze transcends the picture plane and permeates deep into the subject’s psyche. Kassan’s portraits pulsate with the lives of his sitters, and there’s no better example than his @facingsurvival series. It features paintings and drawings of more than a dozen Holocaust survivors, created over a period of several years. In preparation for painting their portraits, Kassan recorded his subjects’ testimonies, getting to know them deeply. His intimate understanding of his subjects and of their unique histories conveys a sense of their experiences in the Holocaust as much as it does their individual appearance now: the visceral, lifelike imagery captures each person’s spirit, pain, and dignity. David’s portraits become a form of testimony in their own right, revealing the luminous visage of resilience, the complex nature of survival, and a contemporaneous reflection of their lives in the aftermath of genocidal violence. The painting measures 168 by 300 centimetres and seeing it in our gallery of Modern Art feels like you’ve stepped right into a French orchard.
