I feel so comforted when I read someones Covid mental heath story online these days, it makes me feel way less crazy I always have had mental health stuff but never really went on meds fully, I don’t know why, I guess it always felt remotely manageable but somewhere in early covid times. April-ish, and despite 2020 starting really fucking great career wise, I stopped turning around demos, finals, paid stuff, stopped getting out of bed I hate letting down clients so much cause I remember what that feels like when I was an artist. you fuck up their whole timeline and then people started getting shot while sleeping in their homes and on the street and while jogging for no reason and I guess it had been happening for a very very long time but I never truly realized and it’s a privilege to not already know that and then nothing felt safe or remotely ok all of a sudden and why would you even leave your bed or chance it even if you are white and privileged and safe and I started to freak out about my family and what if I couldn’t cross the border anything could go wrong and everything was I went on the first meds the doctor recommended and getting on them was a trip, made me feel even worse and being on them made me not care about work or art or life and coming off them has been a special journey to hell but I just wanted to feel stuff again all the while other people are dealing with real actual shit and violence and poverty and I can’t sit down at my desk to finish something anyway I know things are slowly getting better politically and socially and hopefully in all the other ways but if anyone ever needs to talk and trusts me I’m here reading other peoples Covid mental heath journeys online and slowly starting to work again and remembering why living life even at its worst can be really fucking good sometimes - @robyndellunto on Instagram

I’m a technical person and I’ve been doing web meetings of one sort or another for nearly two decades ... I’ve been thinking about what I’m seeing and hearing, and I would like to add some perspective. I’d like you to do this thought experiment about a fictional series of web training sessions: • Select an audience of 20 to 30 people. You want the people with the shortest attention spans and least technology skills you can find. You will interact with both these people AND their managers. • Make sure they are all slightly short on sleep and fairly stressed. Just for fun, keep them inside and without regular exercise for AT LEAST five days. • Make sure everybody is extremely well-caffeinated. Double whatever they would normally drink. Then add some more. • Make sure everybody, including you, is using an unfamiliar device and video conferencing software in addition to a couple other software packages ... All support staff are overloaded and stressed. • Plan to communicate with the managers for about 75% of the issues your attendees have. You will use FOUR different apps to do this, including text, email, chat in the video software, and chat in a related app. The managers are all trying to do their day jobs and some are helping more than one attendee. ... • Make sure all network and internet connections are slightly overloaded and flaky. • Everybody gets a 10-inch tablet screen on which to watch those 20 to 30 other people in the meeting. You can have a laptop with one external monitor. You have to run the meeting yourself. • Now try to teach something. For three hours.
